To be fed up of Instamums

Hmmmmx100 · 25/08/2017 22:56

I followed a few of the more well-known Instamums but got weary of the constant daily barrage of brand endorsements. I can't relate to people on £100k a year in Farrow & Ball houses. I just can't. So I had to unfollow em all, every one. AIBU to feel a bit miffed that these people are using the idea of sisterhood to make money? They're not our friends, they're just there to sell us stuff that we probably don't need anyway.

I read something that MOD wrote as a tribute to her publicist, in which she said when she found out she was pregnant with twins her first thought was to seek out this publicist to help her! Not how most people would react.
MOD and FOD have not become "lifestyle influencers" 🤢 by accident. This is a very well organised and strategised branding of their family. In some ways I can't knock them, but in others it sickens me that you can earn so much money in this way and I wonder what the world is coming to 😂.

BubbleAnimal · 01/09/2017 11:54

OhBondage I read up on it all a few weeks ago - I agree some are clever as well and buy likes too. It starts from something silly like £5 for 200 followers I read somewhere. I looked into it all when I noticed people I follow who'd been on Instagram a similar time to me had thousands of followers for no logical reason......

NotACleverName · 01/09/2017 11:59

When is MDM ever not on holiday?

OhBondageUpYours · 01/09/2017 12:02

I reckon fair play to the ones who game the platform well. Actually it's not easy to do and you still need to produce good content to attract the real followers. But fakes do work as people are naturally drawn to others who seem popular. If Instagram had a good purge of their accounts (which they will never do properly as their user numbers would drop drastically), it would be very interesting to see the follower counts on many of the popular accounts.

Day3Blues · 01/09/2017 12:04

I think instastories has changed everything with regards to how I see these instamums. Some seem harmless in pictures and then you see their stories and get to know them a bit more and that has changed my opinion of them.
I do agree though there are definitely some I follow purely for the car crash element of it and to cringe.
MOD was much better when she was pregnant with the twins and was just midwifeyhooper. This MOD and FOD thing has gone to their heads and they post so much crap and yet just like Katie Price and reality tv I can't help but watch it.
I'm glad we've got this thread to discuss them all, it needs to be done! It is just the modern version of reality tv.

I feel like I need to watch LAOLF between my fingers sometimes it's so cringeworthy and yet I continue to watch. She is the cringe award winner.

I do find it very strange though how they are all just talking to a bunch of randoms they don't know. I like using Instagram and putting my own pictures up but I could never (even if I wanted to) dedicate the level of time it takes these people to stage their photos and 'pop onto stories'. I feel sad that they are missing out on just watching and enjoying the moment as they are too busy filming it all.

Onlygirlinthehouse has been mentioned and I do like her but I feel like she would love to be like MOD and comes across as a little desperate. She's slightly cringe but I do like her.

Feathering the empty nest, I know what you mean about Mr Shouty and she does seem like she has this perfect pig, yoga, Waitrose life but the pain she much go through at losing her baby boy I just can't imagine. Most of the free stuff she shows is stuff that's been donated to her local special care unit, so she's using her insta for a positive reason IMO, not grabby like the others.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 01/09/2017 12:10

I forgot about the MoD twin being poorly and FoD documenting it, I did think at the time that was a bit Hmm.

yummycake123 · 01/09/2017 12:20

Chunkamatic I agree with you, they are a "brand" now, definitely part of a plan that is working well for them.

I also don't understand how some people can make so much money through social media, especially Instagram. I follow a few Vloggers on Youtube, and I feel they do "more work": they have to film, edit videos, post regularly, etc. But some of these Instagrammers are mainly doing promoted work, so probably they are told to follow a script on what to post and how to take the pic, etc. It's all fake, but they have to keep this image that they are "normal mums"...when they're not.

And what I don't understand is who are all these people commenting stuff like "You look so gorgeous!", "You're an amazing human being".. blah blah blah on their posts, like they know these people? It's weird.

BubbleAnimal · 01/09/2017 12:22

I just had a nosey and it's still there, from Feb this year. Why would you selfie with paramedics in your house? I just don't think I'll ever understand that.

langkaw · 01/09/2017 12:24

Good post day 3.

Mod and Fod have the most sycophant follows ever. They make me cringe. 'You are amazing! You are hilarious! Amazing parents!' How do they know? Why do they think that? And so so protective and jumping on haters and trolls who make the slightest criticism. I never see this in real life.

DeleteOrDecay · 01/09/2017 12:31

This thread is great, just followed a few instaparents just to marvel and Hmm at their lives.

That said there are a couple of instamums who I genuinely enjoy. Unmumsymum, BrummyMummyOf2, Hurrah For Gin and PuzzleAndPetticoats are my favourites. They don't tend to do ads either.

readyteddyehohpo · 01/09/2017 12:33

Who is THTMM?? It's driving me nuts!

I actually like mother pukka and MoD. The adverts/swanky events can get annoying but I just skip those stories. I might be naive but it didn't occur to me at all that the tumble dryer thing might have been an attempt to get a free dryer. Really??
I like the honesty of both those 'instamummies' they don't hide from the fact that their children tantrum, eat floor crud and that they row with their other halves about putting the bin out. And they're not afraid to show their wobbly bits. Much better than seeing posts about 'look at my amazing post baby belly ' (Cheryl, binky, Billy faiers). They really get my goat. -and make me feel like a ten tonne whale

Yes they have nice houses and probably have cleaners but good for them, wouldn't we all if we could afford it and were opening our doors to the internet every day? I'm sure in years to come the law regarding showing your children online will change. It's only a matter of time before this generation of kids come of age and there will be cases of children suing their parents because of all their online content/ lack of privacy etc. Mark my words!

BlueIsYou · 01/09/2017 12:41

ready That stands for the home that made me.

It frustrates me too when people post in abbreviations and I don't know what they mean Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 01/09/2017 12:43

Oh yes, I remember THTMM starting a thread about her pregnant Elsa, that was a few months back, no?

Fuck me, was that real Shock, I thought it was a troll?

Elephantsahoy · 01/09/2017 12:44

I don't know if that was actually her or someone just pretending to be her

BubbleAnimal · 01/09/2017 12:44

Readyteddy I agree. I like people like fearne cotton, they manage to insta and story without ever showing the children's faces. Did anyone watch her who do you think you are as well? She didn't show them in that either. My kids are all over my (private locked down) Facebook, but my Instagram rarely even shows the backs of their heads. I don't put them on there at all, but then again my account is mostly linked to my hobby.

Mothervulva · 01/09/2017 12:45

THTMM is one of the dullest most beige-tactic houses I've ever seen.

Elland · 01/09/2017 12:55

I've never seen any of these Insta accounts but it does bug me when the ones that I do follow seem to be advertising more and more things!

My favourite Instagram at the moment is Mamareidwrites (I think that's what it's called) I don't think I've seen any advertisements and she seems to keep it real. I like Katebowbow too even though she does advertise products a bit.

I wish I had the white clean house and time to be an Instamum!

therealreginaphalange · 01/09/2017 12:57

MOD delivered our friends' first baby, we live locally and I had a DC the same time she had her twins so often saw her out and about. Always had a slight twinge of satisfaction that in real life she looked grumpy as fuck doing the shopping and not at all as polished as she appears on Instagram. Our friends LOVED her as a midwife though so it does feel a bit like she's a nice person who's been swept up in the brandifying of her family. Can't stand FOD's account and now find their whole set up very cringe.

Hallomiaddicted · 01/09/2017 13:17

I've unfollowed mrs meldrum. She is cashing in on baby while in NICU with ads. What is wrong with these people.

Beadieeye · 01/09/2017 13:29

I can't get my head around someone taking selfies/recording their child being ill. It's not normal!
I had a look at FOD last night..oh dear, oh dear....cringe. But then again I've always found attention seeking, desperation and egotism profoundly unattractive. Maybe it's just me though, as he is very popular.

Cococrumble · 01/09/2017 13:30

Agreed. I used to really like oaksandolive but recently it's #ad after #ad after #ad. It's so tiresome and a shame.

Saying that I find Instagram in general has gone a lot more edited and staged recently. People seem to be trying to 'brand' themselves, and that's not just the instamummies but generally across the site.

Cococrumble · 01/09/2017 13:36

Hallomi- I thought the same thing. Unfollowed after the "meet the baby video" where they were pushing the eldest daughter out of the shot, which was followed by a post of their mailing address. Presumably for freebies.

TheOtherGirl · 01/09/2017 14:16

Goodness, have just read the twee one and it's so syrupy. I feel ever so slightly nauseated.

Dozyoldtwonk · 01/09/2017 14:26

Was this on You Tube coco or Insta stories? I unfollowed Mrs M for the simple fact she is one of the worst for having sold out. She will pretty much #ad anything.

chickaleta · 01/09/2017 15:36

I'm starting to quite like that lad dad as an antidote to all this.
