AIBU to lie?

smashtheglass · 20/08/2017 10:41

Leading a bit of a double life at the moment as I have a job but haven't told people as it's not a job that gets much respect.

My best friend says I shouldn't do it because it's disgusting. My husband says it's ridiculous as I don't need to do it as he earns enough.

I only do 4 hours a week so AIBU to lie?

YANBU and I am sorry that people around you are not supportive.

KinkyAfro · 20/08/2017 10:44

Phone sex chat lines?

ImperialBlether · 20/08/2017 10:44

What's the job?

smashtheglass · 20/08/2017 10:45

No it's nothing dodgy just home care work.

Escorting?

QueenNefertitty · 20/08/2017 10:45

Oh - why does your friend think that's disgusting????

smashtheglass · 20/08/2017 10:47

Because it involves poo and wee and catheter bags and stoma bags and sick and dribble.

Scrumptiousbears · 20/08/2017 10:49

One day they may need assistance from a career and would be grateful for it. Shallow fuckers.

QueenNefertitty · 20/08/2017 10:50

@smash

That's your friend's problem. Hope for her sake none of her relatives, or she, becomes unwell or infirm in their old age.

Good for you for doing a care job you don't HAVE to do, because you want to. We'll need more people like you in years to come. Many many more.

Sally52014 · 20/08/2017 10:51

That's a job to be proud of. You're helping vulnerable people. You should shout it from the roof tops! Well done x

PsychoPumpkin · 20/08/2017 10:51

Are you happy with your job.? If so, who cares what your friend and husband thinks.?

pilates · 20/08/2017 10:55

No, you shouldn't lie you should be proud. Carers do fantastic work. I look at people like you with admiration.

Violetcharlotte · 20/08/2017 10:58

Your friend sounds like an arse! I've got a couple of friends who are carers and I'm completely in awe of them. It's a difficult job, but so important. You should be proud of the difference you're making to people's lives, not embarrassed.

smashtheglass · 20/08/2017 10:58

I just can't be doing with the aggro but it does make me feel bad when they text asking what I am up to and I have to lie!

OP posts:
hippoherostandinghere · 20/08/2017 10:58

Your friends is a dickhead.

onalongsabbatical · 20/08/2017 10:58

Your best friend thinks being a carer is disgusting?
You need a new best friend.
I used to work in an old people's home, one of the best and most rewarding jobs it's possible to have. Needs to be valued more and talked up, not hidden away. You should be proud of yourself.

hippoherostandinghere · 20/08/2017 10:58

Friend, single, I'm not sure about your other friends.

LaContessaDiPlump · 20/08/2017 11:00

That is a great, worthy job and not one to lie about.

Only thing I would caution is that people who are resident in care homes are at higher risk of infection with multi-drug resistant bacteria (simply due to the fact they get more treatment, more frequently) and so you're working in an environment which is slightly more risky than average, microbiologically speaking.

If you are healthy then you personally will be fine; however if you're in close contact with anyone immunocompromised then they may need a heads up to keep a distance from you.

That would be my only non-positive thought on the matter!

smashtheglass · 20/08/2017 11:01

It isn't a care home but you're right about infections and so on x

At least you are working and contributing to the economy.

HellToupee · 20/08/2017 11:14

OP I think that is a wonderful, rewarding job that surely is respected?!

highinthesky · 20/08/2017 11:15

It's a physically tough job but good care is priceless. Helping people with personal care is admirable, not a reason to be embarrassed.

Of course it's a job that deserves respect. Don't lie about what you do.

I thought you were going to reveal yourself as a traffic warden. Confused

EssentialHummus · 20/08/2017 11:16
