It seems the tide is turning, at least on the business & industry side - Trump is toxic. I wonder how long it's going to take for the penny to drop for the GOP.

Kursk · 15/08/2017 18:31

Lweji

How are roads supposed to be funded, then?

Run the government like a business, find a income stream such as oil or sell arms.

They had roads and schools before income tax was adopted in the 1940's

This is why I am a bit dubious of the public naming and calls for firing of people photographed at the Charlottesville marches. It is too easy to make mistakes and mistakes like that can ruin someone's life. If someone openly admits they were there and outs themselves, fine, but I don't like the idea of random people on the internet guessing who someone is from a grainy photo and then demanding they lose their job.

For someone who has such a dependent relationship with twitter, this must rankle:

(From Wikipedia)

This list of most liked tweets on Twitter contains the top ten tweets with the most likes of all time on the social networking platform Twitter; Twitter does not provide an official list. As of August 2017, the top tweet was made by Ariana Grande and has over 2.7 million likes.

Also, as of August 2017, six of the top ten most liked tweets in history were tweets made by Barack Obama.

(And whilst Wikipedia isn't that reliable, a twitter spokesperson confirmed that obamas tweet about hate being taught that was obliquely in response to Charlottesville is officially the second highest liked tweet so far)

You know what's called right, Kursk?

That's socialism

I'm actually crying here Grin

Roussette · 15/08/2017 18:33

For the business leaders leaving in their droves, he's tweeted more or less saying there's plenty more where they came from!

Hmm

Dan Merica @danmericaCNN
A WH official tells CNN the image of a train hitting a man/CNN logo was "inadvertently posted" & "immediately deleted" once it was noticed

orlantina · 15/08/2017 18:36

Are there any Press briefings at the moment?

cozietoesie · 15/08/2017 18:36

Gosh. I do so hope that there's no 'inadvertence' in his approach to NK. Wink

per source, WH has confirmed they will rescind Obama order that flood-prone infrastructure be built with sea-level rise in mind

And yet:

www.politico.com/story/2016/05/donald-trump-climate-change-golf-course-223436

A permit application for the wall, filed by Trump International Golf Links Ireland and reviewed by POLITICO, explicitly cites global warming and its consequences — increased erosion due to rising sea levels and extreme weather this century — as a chief justification for building the structure.

cozietoesie · 15/08/2017 18:37

And meanwhile, Mr Mueller's people continue to work away. Smile

Roussette · 15/08/2017 18:39

find a income stream such as oil or sell arms
Hmm That's hardly sensible is it? Let's just arm all the tinpot dictatorships out there to provide enough to fund the country!

BiglyBadgers · 15/08/2017 18:40

Kursk you really need to learn to check your facts. Of course they had tax in the 1940s. FFS, a quick Google would tell you that. Here let me help you...

Roussette · 15/08/2017 18:41

16 minutes after Trump tweeted about the CEO's, another one, Scott Paul, has said he's leaving.

Mass exodus!

Ok please educate me, I don't see how the government taxing oil companies, imports, etc rather than taxing its people is socialist?

Run the government in such a way that it's own people are not a revenue stream

cozietoesie · 15/08/2017 18:44

I would assume that Paul phoned 45 - or the WH - first to tell them. Wink

Kursk · 15/08/2017 18:46

Apologies I got my dates mixed up. It was 1913 it was introduced

cozietoesie · 15/08/2017 18:47

And I had thought that Wall St would have a quiet, contemplative sort of day with a modest rise.

I was wrong. Wink

Elendon · 15/08/2017 18:48

Rats deserting the ship comes to mind. And where or where is Steve?

BiglyBadgers · 15/08/2017 18:55

Kursk the population of America was around 77.5mil in 1900, it is now around 323mil. The country was a completely different place. No public healthcare at all, no social security at all, no farming subsidies or welfare programs. Do you know anything about what the country was like in the 1900s? You really want to drag your county back there? Hmm

BiglyBadgers · 15/08/2017 19:01

Actually, don't answer that. I don't have the energy to argue with someone who would rather watch innocent people die of preventable illnesses than give a small proportion of their earnings to provide decent healthcare for all.

Kursk · 15/08/2017 19:02

BiglyBadgers

I live off grid, with no access to the programs that you mention so sounds like business as normal to me.

Honestly, I am not sure that the country is better than it was in 1900. Yes we have gained a lot but we have also lost a lot.

catgirl1976 · 15/08/2017 19:04

Well Kursk, when the profits of the enterprise of a country are distributed to the people to pay for their well being (roads and schools and things) that's erm, pretty much socialism.

I mean, the dictionary definition is "a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state"

Which sort of sounds like what you're advocating so........hey, you're a socialist :) Where shall I send your badge?

By the way, on your point that they didn't have tax prior to the 1940s - it started in the UK in 1779. Prior to that we had tithes and window taxes and stuff like that. In the US, erm what do you think paid for the Civil War?

Kursk · 15/08/2017 19:04

I am am English and moved to the US, so I lived 20 years with the NHS.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/08/2017 19:05

Don't farming subsidies keep the price of food down (many items are costly compared to the UK)

I hear many people talking about living off grid in the states seems to be the thing at then moment but how many truly do is questionable
