Condolences and best regards....??? This isn't a sympathetic letter to a failed job interview candidate situation.

woman12345 · 13/08/2017 08:24

De lurking to re post this from another thread.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/12/virginia-unite-the-right-rally-protest-violence

Spencer said that they would not back down from protesting against the statue. When he mentioned Mayor Signer by name, the crowd chanted “Jew! Jew! Jew!

No one can say we didn't warn them.

To compare it with what's gone before, I keep double checking myself with what I know about the Nixon/Eisenhower times, which is very little.

I just read an auto bio of Gil Scott Heron there are some similarities with Reagan times?

But with twitter and this it is so much more visceral.

Flowers all and thanks for the thread.

BiglyBadgers · 13/08/2017 08:41

I sort of want to go back and look through our old threads as I am sure we predicted all this including increasing civil unrest, rise of fascism, and even the dick comparisons with NK. Back then I thought/hoped we were being tin foil hatters, sadly and scarily it seems we have been more accurate than we thought. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2017 08:45

We did and the defence from the Trump bots was unbelievable. Even now though I see people like them are blaming Obama and the left for all that has happened.

badbadhusky · 13/08/2017 08:46

I know what you mean, Bigly, but I think it was obvious from the different "interest groups" that Trump courted that his pigeons would come home to roost eventually. Trump is Trump. However, what I don't get is why the GOP have been OK with all this. If we, non-politicians, could read the runes, how could they be so blind?

orlantina · 13/08/2017 08:49

Hopkins and Farage seem shocked by this. Really. They never saw this coming? Stoke up the hate so much - then don't be surprised when this happens.

The alt right gave us the murder of Jo Cox. The mowing down of Muslims at Finsbury Mosque. Murdering of protestors at Charlottesville.

2 sides of the same coin.

woman12345 · 13/08/2017 08:56

how could they be so blind they are patsies, for those who stand to do quite nicely out of this? You're right Bigly, nothing that we didn't think was on the cards.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2017 09:09

David Dukes Tweets over night are utterly sickening.

CaveMum · 13/08/2017 09:09

These are the opening two paragraphs of a BBC article on what has been happening in Charlottesville:

In the middle of Emancipation Park in Charlottesville on Saturday, two young women, one white and one black, took each other's hands and held them tightly, and with their other hands they gripped the steel barrier in front of them.

A few feet away, a young white man with a buzzed haircut and sunglasses leaned towards them over a facing barrier. "You'll be on the first f*g boat home," he screamed at the black woman, before turning to the white woman. "And as for you, you're going straight to hell," he said. Then he gave a Nazi salute.

I want to cry. This is the 21st Century for crying out loud!

orlantina all those acts you described are acts of terrorism but you wouldn't think it from looking at how they are reported in some places.

The use of a car to mow down people is the identical method used in lots of previous cases of terrorism but it isn't being treated in the same way at all. Can't think why.

BiglyBadgers · 13/08/2017 09:24

pain that quote genuinely made me feel sick. The far right, white supremacists will read his silence and ambiguity as support. The official response will give them the confidence to go even further next time. This will get worse and more people will die before this is over. Sad

Gumpendorf · 13/08/2017 09:25

Condolences and best regards....??? This isn't a sympathetic letter to a failed job interview candidate situation.

His tweet about the police officers killed said 'deepest condolences'. He has chosen his words very carefully with these tweets and statements. He has sided with the Nazis .

Maddow on Friday said he is returning to DC on Monday to make a big announcement. She speculated:

  1. Joe Manchin, a democrat senator to be appointed Energy Minister which leaves the newly Republican West Virginian governor to appoint a Republican replacement. Would boost Rep numbers and help him get Obamacare repealed. Manchin doesn't expect to win again in 2018 given the slide to Rep in West Va.
OR
  1. Sessions to be moved to Homeland Security giving him a replacement who would remove Mueller or limit the scope of his enquiries.

Anyone else feel everything has been ratcheted up several notches?

The poison spewed by Nazis, white supremacists, and the KKK is not who we are as a country. Takes less than 140 characters to say it.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/08/2017 09:34

Yes. It has all escalated. But I'm hoping that it's because he's getting increasingly hemmed in by mueller, the GOP starting to take a stand against him, the defence community saying they wouldn't enact the trans ban as it was etc and that these actions are the last frantic flailing movements of someone who is going down.

Also, I know he's a reality tv star so it's his default M.O. but it is sad to see government being reduced to cliff hangers and teasers. "Tune in to Monday's episode to find out what momumenal changes that will significantly affect your lives will be brought in!" This isn't the worst thing to be sad about I know but is still worth noting, I think.

bigly'it is terrifying how much more emboldened people will be now they have his tacit approval. I thought the GOP might've stepped in to calm the rhetoric before we got
to civil war levels but who can be sure of anything any more.

BiglyBadgers · 13/08/2017 09:42

So...someone explain to me why this guy is not being convicted of terrorist offences when it is clear he used tactics linked to terrorism with the aim of terrorising people in support of a particular political group?....oh wait! I forgot for a moment he is white. Stupid me. Hmm

Spent most of yesterday with some of DH's US family (Dems voters from California) visiting UK. No guesses needed for what the main topic of convo was.
To paraphrase and sum up what was said after we saw the day's horrific news, this tweet is just perfect.

To everyone who voted for him: fuck you. Seriously fuck you and all your bullshit excuses like "but she's a liar!" You're all so stupid.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2017 09:53

The man who killed Heather was charged with second degree murder. That means unplanned, not premeditated. WTF? How do they know that? His car had no licence plate, he drove at high speed unswervingly into the crowd.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 13/08/2017 09:57

On a more positive note - DH's rels are active anti-Trump campaigners and create 'protest' letters for anyone concerned to use to send to their respective congress men/women and senators about whatever legislation or just sheer lunacy Trump is puking out.
