It is an alarming figure and even more so to think that evidence based policies aren't being pursued.

Apols if already posted but I missed this yesterday and would hate for anyone else to miss out on an opportunity to indulge in a massive eyeroll

This was an interesting article about Americans' perception of themselves.

It was a strange read - some of it I identified with (not as an American but as someone who's formative years were basically the '90s - the sense that "history had ended" is definitely one I felt when we were studying the cold war at school!) but some of it seemed alien (possibly because I'm not white and am a child of immigrants?).

It veers between insightful and solipsistic for me but I'd be interested to know what others made of it.

Oh yes that was interesting. Horrified by the idea that international geography had been taken off the curriculum in American schools but a) i thought there wasn't a national curriculum in the USA, or at least not then (Common Core?) and b) I'm not sure how much international perspective I really got in my education - if i got any it was from my family, perhaps ironically influenced by grandparents in the administration of the 'Empire'.

I wonder if it is typical of any country to overstate its own virtue and importance to its citizens. I don't think we in this country have done more than scratch the surface of what colonialism really did to the world or to us. I am reading 'The Divide' by Jason Hickel which is a thoroughly depressing read all about the total distortion of the economic system to benefit the West. The end may be more positive when I get to it. I thought as well that what she is describing is just the process of growing up, mainly.

lionheart · 10/08/2017 11:25

That's fascinating Pain.

I am always struck by the mixture of naivite (idealism perhaps?) and unthinking patriotism that runs through political discourse in the States, even amongst the left.

But there is a wider point there about seeing yourself through the eyes of others they is vital. Otherwise it is all just characterised as a clash of civilisations (which I think certain people on the right think applies within America), or the war between good and evil.

cozietoesie · 10/08/2017 11:26

Nope, Lweji. They had nuclear drills like that. Sort of the same as putting on life jackets in aeroplanes - no practical use but it gives you something to do to occupy yourself. Wink

Lweji · 10/08/2017 11:35

Shall I tell you about life jackets?

It's so that the bodies float and are easier to recover.

The same for brace. It protects the jaw, so the bodies are easier to identify through dental records.
The same regarding not moving seats.
I think there's another one, but I can't remember.

cozietoesie · 10/08/2017 11:36

I believe them. Smile

Lweji · 10/08/2017 11:40

Speaking of Benghazi, and emails, what was Hillary doing that night? Where was she and with whom?

But this takes us to: what is Trump doing, who is he with and where is he during the NK military threat crisis? Surely at the WH, worst case Camp David, speaking with his Intelligence and Military people, being briefed, deciding carefully on spoken and written statements, analysing all possible scenarios, deciding on the best strategies, etc

No?

I'll love to see his emails and conversation records from this time too.

honeysucklejasmine · 10/08/2017 11:55

Lweji 😂😂

Lweji · 10/08/2017 11:59

Well, yes, I don't know whether to laugh or cry either.

Oh dear. That seems a spectacularly poorly judged move. 😧

orlantina · 10/08/2017 12:38

And if you look at the previous poll results, I think that tells you who follows them.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 10/08/2017 12:52

anna yes I think it does describe growing up

Also another eye roll moment

Lweji · 10/08/2017 12:55

And yet:

Do you think President Trump is right in barring LGBT transgender people from the military due to 'medical costs and disruption?'

57% No, he's wrong.

He didn't tweet that. :)

cozietoesie · 10/08/2017 13:19

Compare Trump in 1999 with 45 now. OK, he's still Trump but he's ........different. The current 45 seems to be .........not up to it anymore.

honeysucklejasmine · 10/08/2017 13:20

My BIL has just arrived back from the States. He is living in Atlanta, GA. A little spot of blue in a red state. Be interesting to hear from him what's reported over there. (He's a politics graduate who leans left)

Is Mattis visiting Bedminster at the moment?

badbadhusky · 10/08/2017 14:01

I redact my earlier post. I thought he'd tweeted an open poll. I also read a few tweets on that account & belatedly clocked the hard right bias. The cartoon a few tweets below depicting Trump as the only adult in the room (bigliest irony fail) was something to behold. Hmm

Can he please stop re-tweeting idiots who praise him for nuclear provocation, pretty please? Cause, really, it scares the rest of the world shitless.

Thanks for the Gin, lion. I may need it. Wink
