My SIL (DB's wife) loves the name StJohn, but doesn't like the spelling. I understand this, as people will often find it confusing and read it as Saint John. I would therefore steer clear of it.

However, she's decided (DB isn't interested in names, so she's choosing), that "Sinjun" is the best solution.

AIBU to think that this is silly? Their DS's last name (he's a couple of days' old) is Smith.

Neither SIL or DB are pretentious people, btw.

I appreciate that SIL or my sister might recognise who this is posting. but it is ok as she knows I think this is really daft. We get on well.

I thought that the replies on here would be useful to either tell me to mind my own, or persuade her to go for a different monker.

Well lots of names aren't pronounced how they're written. People will get used to it.

I think StJohn will lead to a lifetime of tedious spellings and explanations.

I used to work with a StJohn and he had a few problems with the name. People also presumed he was posh, which irritated him.

Oh, apparently there's a band called Sinjon Smith (googled it).

Don't really like the name - it's a posh surname isn't it? But if I saw "Sinjun Smith" on a class register say I might wonder if the child was mixed race Asian/White British for example, wondering if "Sinjun" was a name from a different culture. It wouldn't immediately make me think of the "StJohn" upper class English surname.

But then at least he'd probably be the only one in his class?

They're also atheists, which again doesn't fit with StJohn, does it?

Get it wrong they can be gently corrected. I think if I saw Sinjun I would think the parents had no idea what the correct spelling was and had guessed.
