to think that Sinjun is really daft?

My SIL (DB's wife) loves the name StJohn, but doesn't like the spelling. I understand this, as people will often find it confusing and read it as Saint John. I would therefore steer clear of it.

However, she's decided (DB isn't interested in names, so she's choosing), that "Sinjun" is the best solution.

AIBU to think that this is silly? Their DS's last name (he's a couple of days' old) is Smith.

Neither SIL or DB are pretentious people, btw.

I appreciate that SIL or my sister might recognise who this is posting. but it is ok as she knows I think this is really daft. We get on well.

I thought that the replies on here would be useful to either tell me to mind my own, or persuade her to go for a different monker.

Awful even with correct spelling. Minor unmemorable character in Jane Eyre...

Spelled Sinjun sorry but I would consider calling SS not really but you know what I mean if I came across parents who did that to their kid (and I have a son with an "out there" name). Just dreadful.

ToeKneeChestNut · 23/07/2017 16:55

A band! That's funny. I'll tell her.

Yes, I think it looks like an Asian name.

SIL says that, as Smith is so ordinary, they (she) wants a more unusual first name. I can appreciate that as my DC has slightly uncommon first names for the same reason.

I can't stand silly made-up spellings or names that are difficult though. My friend has a Niamh and said that she regrets going for something that is misread/mispronounced/misspelt often.

The how is Stjohn pronounced (sorry to be daft!)

NameChangeFamousFolk · 23/07/2017 16:57

Is she having an old, rich man for a baby?

Other names in the running are Lucien or Crispin.

I give in!

Stick with the proper spellings. St John is known if mildly antiquated. Jane Eyre is still well read giving the name some presence.

I doubt most people would appreciate their name starting with Sin/ Syn (thinks of diet plans...)

ToeKneeChestNut · 23/07/2017 16:59

StJohn is pronounced Sinjon - sort of.

SIL says that Crispin is their postman's name and Lucien worked in the Post Office where she grew up.

Seems she has a thing about post!

NameChangeFamousFolk · 23/07/2017 17:00

Crispin is great. Lucien's alright.

CalmItKermitt · 23/07/2017 17:00

People will just assume the parents are a bit thick and can't spell StJohn.

ToeKneeChestNut · 23/07/2017 17:01

DB says the postie is Crispian, not Crispin.

I'm just glad it looks like they'll forget Sinjun.

ToeKneeChestNut · 23/07/2017 17:02

TBH they are a bit thick. Grin

Lucien is a lovely name.

Biggreygoose · 23/07/2017 17:03

Crispin StJohn Peregrine Smith.

^^^
This needs to be his name. Grin

lynmilne65 · 23/07/2017 17:03

awful Shock

RJnomore1 · 23/07/2017 17:04

Has she thought about Julian?

Sinjun will just be people thinking she's heard the name and not known how it was spelt. Like when I was 10 and wrote that my friends sister was Schvonne (Siobhan)

Crispin is nice and could be Cris if he preferred when older.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 23/07/2017 17:04

I love Lucien. Crispin is a bit too posh wanker for me! Grin

fuzzywuzzy · 23/07/2017 17:05

I had a friend who was going out with a StJohn, as I'm not posh I wondered for a while whether I'd heard right.

Sinjun reminds me of the character in airwolf.

JennyLane · 23/07/2017 17:05

Both versions are rather grim to me.. sorry!

dadadadathatslife · 23/07/2017 17:06

How do you pronounce St John? Isn't it pronounced Saint John? Wtf is going on? Have i been hiding under a rock?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 17:06

Spellingh it Sinjun will make them look uneducated.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 17:07

I like Lucien and Crispin is still miles better then SynJun Grin

Floggingmolly · 23/07/2017 17:08

It reminds me of cowboys and injuns...
If they must use it, they should spell it correctly. But unless they're extremely upper class, (and the spelling thing suggests otherwise) they really shouldn't.
Best stick with Kevin. Or Jayden.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 17:08

Kayden

@ToeKneeChestNut

"I can't stand silly made-up spellings or names that are difficult though. My friend has a Niamh and said that she regrets going for something that is misread/mispronounced/misspelt often."

So you "can't stand" names that are "difficult" for you? Surely this is quite closed-minded? Can you stand Irish people having Irish names?

Lest there be any doubt, I don't like Sinjun.

caffeinestream · 23/07/2017 17:11

StJohn is pronounced Sin-Jon, not Saint John.
