to think that Sinjun is really daft?

My SIL (DB's wife) loves the name StJohn, but doesn't like the spelling. I understand this, as people will often find it confusing and read it as Saint John. I would therefore steer clear of it.

However, she's decided (DB isn't interested in names, so she's choosing), that "Sinjun" is the best solution.

AIBU to think that this is silly? Their DS's last name (he's a couple of days' old) is Smith.

Neither SIL or DB are pretentious people, btw.

I appreciate that SIL or my sister might recognise who this is posting. but it is ok as she knows I think this is really daft. We get on well.

I thought that the replies on here would be useful to either tell me to mind my own, or persuade her to go for a different monker.

i don't think its too bad, i used to know a Sinjin

MargaretCavendish · 23/07/2017 17:45

Have they considered Caspian? I think it would cause a lot less confusion than Crispian, and I loved the Narnia book as a kid!

missanony · 23/07/2017 17:46

Tarquin nn Quinn is my suggestion

Penny4UrThoughts · 23/07/2017 17:47

Or even sinjun smith www.imdb.com/name/nm0809978/

TheDowagerCuntess · 23/07/2017 17:56

DC go to school with a Sinjin (or maybe it's Sinjun).

I don't know what the parents where thinking. I don't try very hard not to judge, but frankly.

St John, of course, isn't any better, but Sinjin is just...

Hassled · 23/07/2017 18:15

I went to Uni with a St John. He only had one hand and was thoroughly lovely in every way. I had such a crush . Anyway, my point is that I grasped the pronunciation within a nano-second, and I'm not especially bright. Go with St John.

HoneyWheeler · 23/07/2017 18:19

I have a friend StJohn and while it is unusual, he only tells people once how it's pronounced and then that's it! I have an unusual surname and it doesn't bother me at all having to spell/repeat it.

winewolfhowls · 23/07/2017 18:29

If she likes postmen, has she considered pat? Wink

VeryButchyRestingFace · 23/07/2017 18:38

It's like spelling Charlotte Sharlotte or something equally as bizarre.

I've seen that, so I have.

I really like StJohn, spelled the proper way.

MargaretCavendish · 23/07/2017 18:39

I have a friend StJohn and while it is unusual, he only tells people once how it's pronounced and then that's it!

But while people might think his name is a bit strange (and perhaps pretentious) they won't think that he/his parents are idiots, which is the danger for Sinjun.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 23/07/2017 18:46

Oh dear God no....don't make up an 'alternative' spelling. People will think you are either thick or pretentious and the poor kid will be saddled with it.

Moonflower12 · 23/07/2017 18:53

What about Tarquin or Tristan?

user1498911589 · 23/07/2017 19:17

How about Marmaduke?

ImperialBlether · 23/07/2017 19:20

Why are so many people spelling St John as StJohn? It's not one word!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/07/2017 19:34

What does Sinjin mean? Sinjin [sin-jin] as a boys' name is pronounced SIN-jin. It is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Sinjin is "God is gracious". A phonetic spelling of the English pronunciation of Saint John

This might please your sil!

GloriaV · 23/07/2017 19:46

Tell her to go for Sebastian instead.

rankoutsider · 23/07/2017 19:57

Postman Pat! Grin

Goldenhedgehogs · 23/07/2017 20:30

I got obsessed by naming my children with five letters three syllables names. Wtf. It's ok for girls Emily, Lydia etc but when I had a boy I was serious considering Ariel, Uriel, Isiah, Elian because I didn't want to treat him unfairly compared to sisters. Registered him at six week deadline after much debate, one of above is his middle name. Just saying pregnancy hormones have a lot to answer far...

Bairnsmum05 · 23/07/2017 21:17

I hope to god that this child does not grow up in Scotland he'd have the mic taken right out him (also Tarquin and Marmaduke!!)

BlessYourCottonSocks · 23/07/2017 21:39

My main objection to St John is that I can only think of the character in Jane Eyre. And he's a complete knob. Honestly - you wouldn't name your child after him.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 23/07/2017 21:45

Could she call him Ambulance instead?

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2017 22:00

Depends where you are bairns - perfectly normal in the West End of Glasgow, I suspect...

Although, I repeat Ian St John used it as a perfectly serviceable surname as did Jill... why is it pronounced properly differently when it's a last name??

AlrightBabby · 23/07/2017 22:14

I do actually like St John, but if SIL wants a name that people can't spell or pronounce, how about Menzies (Mingus) or Dalziel (Diel)

Bairnsmum05 · 23/07/2017 22:16

piggy I expect you're right about the West End but can you imagine a wee kid in a lot of Glasgow state schools called Caspian or Tarquinius? Hate to sound judgmental (I know I am) but I think certain names are quite specific to the area that they live in just like Lennon and Toni-lee maybe wouldn't blend into a private school. (God I sound so judgmental but there I've said it-hard hat on) Blush
