to think that Sinjun is really daft?

My SIL (DB's wife) loves the name StJohn, but doesn't like the spelling. I understand this, as people will often find it confusing and read it as Saint John. I would therefore steer clear of it.

However, she's decided (DB isn't interested in names, so she's choosing), that "Sinjun" is the best solution.

AIBU to think that this is silly? Their DS's last name (he's a couple of days' old) is Smith.

Neither SIL or DB are pretentious people, btw.

I appreciate that SIL or my sister might recognise who this is posting. but it is ok as she knows I think this is really daft. We get on well.

I thought that the replies on here would be useful to either tell me to mind my own, or persuade her to go for a different monker.

Did you know that Richard Curtis has a Bernard in every single film he makes. I learnt that little factoid on MN. Apparently a Bernard stole his girlfriend many decades ago and that's how it began.

It's just bloody awful, give the poor child a proper name.

MiniMaxi · 24/07/2017 17:15

Oh please god no

Just use St John if they really like the name!

MiniMaxi · 24/07/2017 17:16

Oh there's also a church in London called St John, Smith Square if that makes any difference!

FUNM · 24/07/2017 17:17

Sinjune-Face McSmithFace?

KanyeWesticle · 24/07/2017 17:18

Christian or Caspian are nice. Chrispian feels like a mashup.

Sinjun is spelled St John.

stickygotstuck · 24/07/2017 17:54

BertrandRussell: It's basically one of those little heffalump trap the English upper classes set to make sure the "wrong" people don't get into their club. There are loads of them. The way you say things and eat things....No English person can do anything without another English person judging them!

Couldn't agree more.

I'm sorry to insist that the made-up pronouciation does not change the fact that bloody well IS "Saint John", it MEANS Saint John. Why would you call a person "Saint" anything? "Holy Thomas" anyone? How about "Sacred Mary"?

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2017 18:05

Sinclair comes from St Clair : not even a;; that unusual...

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2017 18:05

That should say all : keyboard issues!

Snjn is the best spelling. Vowels are so last year.

Saracen · 25/07/2017 01:14

She can't win. If she spells it StJohn, people will assume the kid is terrifically posh. If she spells it Sinjun, people will assume the mum is Waynetta. I don't know which would be worse for the poor child.

cluelessnewmum · 25/07/2017 02:38

Making up a name or altering the spelling - ie Sinjun, is really chavvy, I really hope they don't do it.

They would have to use StJohn but both the parents and the poor kid will spend their whole life correcting people.

It is a pretentious name which will invite mocking if they're anything other than wealthy. I just don't know why people have to disadvantage their kid before its even begun its life.

Crispin or Lucien are both much better, but I would also say Crispin is a posh boy's name that will also invite mockery.

I hope these people are kind to their newborn baby. My surname is common like Smith, it's not some travesty, and it's much easier to just blend in when you're a kid.

BigFatGoalie · 25/07/2017 04:57

Am I the only person who would pronounce the T in Saint?
Confused

Jengnr · 25/07/2017 07:17

It's not a nice name (imo) but if you use a horrible name you need to at least get it right.

And all this Crispian talk and no mention of Kulashaker? Shame on you all :)
