To be baffled as to why people do this?...

....comment on a thread to say they're placemarking it when all they're doing is taking up valuable space on the thread? Hmm

If I want to get updates about a thread that I'm interested in but don't have anything to comment on it,instead of commenting on it saying that I'm placemarking,I just tick the 'watch this thread' feature that's also a duplicate of the one that is automatically ticked under the thread if you decide to comment on it solely to get updates so that anytime someone comments on it,I get an email telling me there's been a new comment on it so I just have to click the link and I'm brought back to the thread in question Smile

If would make threads so much quicker to read and they wouldn't fill up as fast and therefore have to have new ones started that people have to start on by saying thanks for starting a new thread and therefore wasting more valuable space and life easier for everyone if people just ticked this box instead of commenting solely to placemark Wink

So could people please make life easier for everyone by using the 'watch this thread' feature at the top of these instead of commenting that they want to be updated on it? Smile

P.S -sorry if some users don't have that feature available on their device or the format of mumsnet they're using Blush

Place marking.

Snap8TheCat · 03/07/2017 22:16

I agree.

Technological incompetence.

It's the equivalent of peeing up a lamppost.

Ahickiefromkinickie · 03/07/2017 22:19

Wow, I never thought of that before.

YABU. Placemarking means you see MNHQ's deletion message when a thread goes pfft.

People who placemark twice are annoying though.

Ahickiefromkinickie · 03/07/2017 22:19

I'm sure a thread will go pfft soon.

Guitargirl · 03/07/2017 22:21

You know some people are equally baffled by the need of some posters to cross out half of their post... naming no names, OP

SallyGinnamon · 03/07/2017 22:21

Bloody annoying if it does

PacificDogwod · 03/07/2017 22:23

I just come in, sit down quietly and munch popcorn.

Anyone?

Writerwannabe83 · 03/07/2017 22:23

An email everytine someone replied to the thread?! That would 100% put me off the 'watch this thread' option because it would be soooo annoying!!!

EssieTregowan · 03/07/2017 22:24

It's so I can see the deletion message.

Hth.

PenguinOfDoom · 03/07/2017 22:26

If the bookmark option was on as standard this might not be as much of a problem. I am mystified as to why you actually have to go into your settings and switch it on.

But yes, placemarking annoys me too. Especially the people that can't even be bothered to comment and just post a . It's not rocket science, FFS.

BrieAndChilli · 03/07/2017 22:27

I never get emails when someone comments on a thread I'm watching ??!!

CanIHaveChocolatePlease · 03/07/2017 22:30

Thanks for some of the unhelpful posts further up the thread Hmm but thanks to Snap8 and AHickie for agreeing Wink

And AHickie seeing the thread(s) I think you're talking about really highlighted it for me and I'm hoping they won't go either as they are so intriguing!

Writer but surely wouldn't it be fairer to get an email than to have people clogging up the post for everyone else? Confused

CanIHaveChocolatePlease · 03/07/2017 22:31

Brie if you've the watch this thread box ticked it should, that's what it does for me anyway Smile

OP posts:
gamerchick · 03/07/2017 22:34

You don't see the deletion message if you just watch the thread. I think it's been mentioned.

CanIHaveChocolatePlease · 03/07/2017 22:34

And writer ,you don't get another email until you've looked at the most recent one you've been sent-it'a not like they come every 5 minutes Grin

OP posts:
Marmalady75 · 03/07/2017 22:36

Is it so they can find the last bit they read easily? Your own post shows up pink, so you can scroll quickly until you see it. Saves having to read the full thread again.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/07/2017 22:37

I'd like a button to press that means you only see the OP's posts to allow for speed reading. Highlighting isn't enough.

Flyinggeese · 03/07/2017 22:40

If you 'watch' a thread using the button then you don't get to see the deletion message (which will come, if you're referring to the thread I think you may be!).

OP why is so much of your post crossed out? How do you do that and why?!

Flyinggeese · 03/07/2017 22:41

X posted with loads sorry.

FinnegansCake · 03/07/2017 22:41

YANBU to be baffled, it has always annoyed me too.

I think there should be a "like" button so that threads don't get clogged up with people who are merely agreeing with something that has already been said Wink

tigercub50 · 03/07/2017 22:44

What's HTH mean?
