....comment on a thread to say they're placemarking it when all they're doing is taking up valuable space on the thread? Hmm

If I want to get updates about a thread that I'm interested in but don't have anything to comment on it,instead of commenting on it saying that I'm placemarking,I just tick the 'watch this thread' feature that's also a duplicate of the one that is automatically ticked under the thread if you decide to comment on it solely to get updates so that anytime someone comments on it,I get an email telling me there's been a new comment on it so I just have to click the link and I'm brought back to the thread in question Smile

If would make threads so much quicker to read and they wouldn't fill up as fast and therefore have to have new ones started that people have to start on by saying thanks for starting a new thread and therefore wasting more valuable space and life easier for everyone if people just ticked this box instead of commenting solely to placemark Wink

So could people please make life easier for everyone by using the 'watch this thread' feature at the top of these instead of commenting that they want to be updated on it? Smile

P.S -sorry if some users don't have that feature available on their device or the format of mumsnet they're using Blush

I don't have the luxury of a watch this thread when using my phone to do MN. I do if I have access to my PC.

That is all.

eurochick · 04/07/2017 07:00

I'm using the phone app. You can watch threads by swiping the thread title sideways when the thread is open.

CaoNiMartacus · 04/07/2017 07:02

Yeah, the crossing-out function is more annoying. Reminds me of my passive aggressive aunt whispering behind her hand.

Hepzibar · 04/07/2017 07:40

YANBU it has always annoyed me.

I think it's rude, its mn rubbernecking.

It just says to me ' I haven't got life so I'll enjoy watching what happens to yours no matter how terrible it is for you'

Trills · 04/07/2017 07:53

If you "watch" a thread you have to remember to go to Threads I'm Watching as well as Threads I'm On

I do think that people must be spectacularly unimaginative to not be able to think of ANYTHING to write.

Just write "oh dear" or "good luck" or "hope it goes well today" or some other banal inoffensive comment.

We all know that people writing that are just marking their place, but they are not saying that they are marking their place so it's acceptable.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 04/07/2017 13:14

I don't have an issue with people placemarking. I just click watch thread.

It does get annoying though when some who place mark, try to be witty.

stuntcamel · 04/07/2017 14:22

Weevils I'm hovering, but there is no 'Bookmark' button appearing. I'm on a laptop if that makes a difference?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 04/07/2017 14:29

I think they mean bookmark the web page. It's done using the browser bar.

OlennasWimple · 04/07/2017 17:53

Weevils - hover your mouse on the right hand side of the message you want to mark, about half way up or maybe towards the bottom of the message. You should get a blue box with "bookmark" pop up

OlennasWimple · 04/07/2017 17:53

stuntcamel, I meant, sorry

2017SoFarSoGood · 04/07/2017 21:29

On my iPhone I swipe left on the last post I've read and click on bookmark. Next time it guess right to that post.

HTH. Have been misguidedly thinking it meant Hate The Hater. Now it all makes sense Grin

Trills · 04/07/2017 21:55

Here's where bookmarking is if you're on a computer.

I still don't bother with it though.

I just come up with something to say, and post it.

LTB

squishee · 05/07/2017 08:24

What I find more annoying is when the OP posts yet again to say "Sorry that was so long".
Or add meaningless detail.
Or correct blingingly obvious autocorrects.
Or bump their post with a prodding "Anyone?" within a few minutes of posting.

Placemarking I can live with.

stuntcamel · 05/07/2017 23:34

Nope - no bookmark, not a sausage.

Notso · 05/07/2017 23:49

I don't understand why some get so annoyed about it. About once a year someone gets their knickers in a twist over it on the Christmas bargain threads even though the other 99% of posters don't care.

SerfTerf · 06/07/2017 00:26

You complain about other people being irritating using whole paragraphs of strike through? ShockGrin
