To be baffled as to why people do this?...

....comment on a thread to say they're placemarking it when all they're doing is taking up valuable space on the thread? Hmm

If I want to get updates about a thread that I'm interested in but don't have anything to comment on it,instead of commenting on it saying that I'm placemarking,I just tick the 'watch this thread' feature that's also a duplicate of the one that is automatically ticked under the thread if you decide to comment on it solely to get updates so that anytime someone comments on it,I get an email telling me there's been a new comment on it so I just have to click the link and I'm brought back to the thread in question Smile

If would make threads so much quicker to read and they wouldn't fill up as fast and therefore have to have new ones started that people have to start on by saying thanks for starting a new thread and therefore wasting more valuable space and life easier for everyone if people just ticked this box instead of commenting solely to placemark Wink

So could people please make life easier for everyone by using the 'watch this thread' feature at the top of these instead of commenting that they want to be updated on it? Smile

P.S -sorry if some users don't have that feature available on their device or the format of mumsnet they're using Blush

my theory is that if posters think a thread has 'legs', they post the

.

So that if it ends up in 'classics' or something, they can say "I was there" (yeah, 200 usernames ago and all you contributed was a full stop!). But sooooo many posters say "oh, the Maui thread" or "I was there for PomBear". Like fuck were half of them!

winglesspegasus · 03/07/2017 23:46

just bookmark thread and go back whenever
delete when done
not complicated
also easier to skim long ones by using 100messages option
easy way to find highlighted bits

CosmoSmallpiece · 03/07/2017 23:47

Spot on OP, no excuse for it. If you desperately want to see the deletion message just go to your browsers history tab and click on the relevant thread. No bookmarking or place marking and hey presto you get something akin to this.

To be baffled as to why people do this?...
stuntcamel · 03/07/2017 23:48

How do you 'bookmark'? I can't see an option for that anywhere, or at least I can't find it if it is there.

Ahickiefromkinickie · 03/07/2017 23:50

I post

.

purely for the deletion message and vindication

No interest in being able to say I was there for the Maui thread even though I was as it wasn't particularly interesting.

ThreeLeggedDonkey · 03/07/2017 23:51

TestingTesting It's not ideal, but I just use Ctrl F, type in the OP's name then click through those posts if there's a long thread I want to read.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 03/07/2017 23:52

Fuck me. I must have missed the memo where the internet is running out of space!

paxillin · 03/07/2017 23:53

There are usually people complaining about people bookmarking following the bookmarkers, thus taking up even more valuable space.

Scrumpernickel · 03/07/2017 23:55

My pet hate is overuse of the strike though option.

Jux · 03/07/2017 23:55

Why can't you just search on the op's name and then you can zp past all those annoying placemarks to the op's udates?

I don't see anything wrong with placemarking and don't really know why moving on to a second or third thread is so annoying.

BackforGood · 03/07/2017 23:56

I put a watch on a thread when I want to save it - might be a recommendation of something I'm going to need later in the year (say holiday o maybe car insurance or something). That is for "long term2 keeping. If there's a conversation going on that I might want to read later that day, or tomorrow, I placemark..... 1) so it shows up in 'Threads I'm On' so, when I open up MN, it is there straight away to carry on reading, and 2) so I can easily see my highlighted post and read on from there.

HTH

paxillin · 04/07/2017 00:01

I put a watch on a thread when I want to save it

I'm more of an amateur. I never want to save a thread for much later. I might want to read it tomorrow morning though and then write on the thread. I have never seen a thread going over 1000 that still had truly novel posts, so it is irrelevant if poster number 897 repeats previous posters or if they say "placemarking" so no valuable posts are used by less valuable contributions.

Slimthistime · 04/07/2017 00:13

I heard something about "watch this thread" not working on the app?

the first time someone posted a "." I thought it was her way of saying she was totally disgusted by what we were discussing!

I agree it's weird to post "." or a squiggly bum or whatever instead of using "watch" but if it doesn't work on the app then I guess that's why.

I find "watch" really handy for book suggestions - I have a squilion books ahead due to MN lists!

OlennasWimple · 04/07/2017 00:16

I think it's bookmarking that people need to do to mark their spot on the thread to be able to pick it up again later, but without actually posting on the thread?

Rachel0Greep · 04/07/2017 00:22

winglesspegasus · 04/07/2017 00:26

bookmarking is using your browser
its called favorites on some operating systems.
it marks the exact page you are on by it web address(url)
thats the http and or www address on your computer or device
save it and you can go back to the exact spot you left.
easy to add easy to delete.

Mumsnet is my favourite forum ever for the peeps and the posts but the forum tools are seriously outdated. Mumsnet it would be so nice if you could adopt some of the forum enhancements of the past ten years. Maybe even start a thread "What new tools would you like to see on mumsnet?" Like PP I would go for: (a) being able to see all OP's updates on one page, so you don't end up with 35 messages where you have to repeat RTWFT in your head over and over....(b) quotable messages (c) ability to upvote or like and the converse. This could help you in lots of ways. So how you pick people to test top products (1k mattresses anyone) is by your own dark-arts "who's a trendsetter/who do mumsnetters listen to alogrithm? Well if you allowed up and down voting, you'd have a much more accurate picture than a one off thread that captured the hive imagination one time (cake er... c u next Tuesday thread for example).

questionsandquestions · 04/07/2017 01:09

(d) Address OP's issues here. There are various options for watching or marking a thread. (e) Sick of flowers, give us some more options for expressing support. I get hay fever.

Bubblesagain · 04/07/2017 01:13

The deletion message is pretty much always the same too revealing/troll, I just look in my history for the thread if I really want to read the deletion message though. Yanbu

LesserofTwoWeevils · 04/07/2017 03:23

To bookmark, hover over the bottom right corner of a post (the last one/last one you've read) and a "Bookmark" button will appear.

Click on it and it changes to "Saved."

Next time you open the thread you'll be taken straight back to that post so you don't have to scroll through pages to find the post you'd got to.

washinggotdarkedon · 04/07/2017 05:54

No to quote facility.

Look on other forums that offer it and you'll see and so many people quote an entire post that it becomes tedious to follow.

Fl0ellafunbags · 04/07/2017 06:22

I can't watch threads with the app on my Xperia

I read Xperia as 'penis'. I think I need readers.

timeforabrewnow · 04/07/2017 06:40

meh

Sometimes I do the 'placemarking' thing just because it seems like a fun thread and I want to know the outcome of it.

Hadn't thought deeply about filling up extra pages etc

Don't care at all if it is annoying to others as it doesn't seem that important

WanderingTrolley1 · 04/07/2017 06:56

Strike-through is the one that irritates me. Like, what is the point??
