To be pissed off with the poppies?

《Semi lighthearted》

Live on a row of terraces, with a small area to the front of each property with a little wall round it. Some have gravel, some grass, some nothing blah blah.

One resident appears to have just chucked a shit load of wild flower seeds down in his and honestly, jt lools bloody gorgeous.

BUT. THE POPPIES?!?!?

Since his garden has really blossomed, poppies are springing up all up and down the street. But not in a nice "ooh look at their pretty garden with the poppies in". More a "this street hasnt waxed its bikini line" way. One big lovely crazy 80s bush of poppies is nice. But the stragglers growing out of cracks in walls, along the road edge, out of random pots on other peoples fronts.

Every day I come home and theres another frigging poppy on the street. They truly are the herpes of the plant world. Which is a shame as unlile herpes, they really are pretty.

I just wish they would stay put.

This thread is hilarious!

DJBaggySmalls · 14/06/2017 21:09

There used to be a movement dedicated to throwing handfuls of hemp seed around. Like the Johnny Appleseed movement, but for stoners.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread You need to put poppies in the fridge for 2 weeks to stratify them, then sprinkle them around in July to flower next year. The ones you get in the supermarket are usually the purple opium poppies Grin

Grantaire · 14/06/2017 21:12

DH is just back from 6 months in Afghanistan. I've checked, he has no feelings either way about poppies. He dislikes geraniums a bit.

PrincessToadinTheHole · 14/06/2017 21:15

Nothing can beat the insanity of that first post. It's just the internet in an awful little nutshell

Oldraver · 14/06/2017 21:15

The poppies popping up along borders and not being weedkillerd are amazing.

I started seeding poppies a few year ago and love them.

Late last year I had some (dead) trees taken out and had 4 tons of soil delivered to fill the gap left. I was delighted to see I now have a whole poppy 'field' of gorgeous colours.

My twatty neighbour offered to go at them with his hedge trimmer. He was told they were there because we wanted them so not everyone is feeling the poppy love

Poppies are lovely anywhere. SomewhatIdiosyncratic - I wasn't keen on dandelions until I went for a pee at 4.30 one morning in May a few years ago and looked out the bathroom window...a little charm of goldfinches had descended on the dandelion clocks, pinning down the clock with their feet and eating the seeds! Since then our garden lawn is full of them, more weeds than grass to be honest and suits me fine Grin

ThreeFish · 14/06/2017 21:18

I have poppies in my garden in flower at the minute. I've tried to get them to spread but with no luck.
I like the sound of your street.

wizzler · 14/06/2017 21:24

love poppies. Buddlea is a git.
I am actively encouraging campanula to grow in the cracks in our patio, while DH follows behind trying to poke them out!

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 14/06/2017 21:30

I planted Alyssum on my balcony a couple of years ago, in window boxes, not knowing that it self seeds. It's now everywhere, coz being high up the seeds have spread far and wide, including across the garage roofs opposite and to gaps in the bricks on the side of the building, I might add some poppies and forget me nots for variety.

HoneyDragon · 14/06/2017 21:36

What is the actual point of geraniums?

GerdaLovesLili · 14/06/2017 21:36

Which makes me remember that my poppies haven't come up this year Shock.

I think that flower garden escapees are a good thing wherever they pop-up. YABU.

reuset · 14/06/2017 21:37

Yanbu OP Grin

I planted a load of wildflower seeds last year and got huge belladonna (deadly nightshade) plants, and nothing else Hmm I think IO posted here about it actually. I initially thought they were blackcurrants growing and was planning to make something delicious...

AmyGardner · 14/06/2017 21:38

Yeah, all those soldiers who fought to defend the poppies GrinConfused

BuzzKillington · 14/06/2017 21:40

Sure soldiers who fought for our country hold that sane view

That might be the silliest comment I have ever read on here Grin

Liara · 14/06/2017 21:41

Scatter some love-in-a-mist around and soon there will be no room left for the poppies.

I actually like them best growing in cracks. They stay small that way, and tidier.

disastrousflapjack · 14/06/2017 21:42

There are a lot of things that are upsetting or highly irritating in this world. But beautiful flowers are beautiful flowers wherever they pop up in my opinion. Little beacons of colour peaking out and attracting bees. I'm a bit jealous. Though I'd not thank you for a shitload of reuset's deadly nightshade :)

FlippinNorah · 14/06/2017 21:43

YABVU not to specify the type of poppy OP.

Most are lovely. Some are not. I'm looking at you, you expensive hairy bastards that turned out orange when you should have been RED. Grrr.

PencilsInSpace · 14/06/2017 21:45

How lovely!

There's this house a few doors down from us where a little old lady used to live. She spent every fine day sitting on her doorstep drinking rum out of a pop bottle, plying passing children with sweets and shouting at us all for not going to church.

For some reason, every spring her front garden was a solid mass of white bluebells. No other plants at all (scrappy weeds later in the summer).

She became too unwell eventually and went into a care home and her house was sold. The person who bought it concreted over the front garden really badly and there are no more bluebells there now, except they escaped and 4 doors either side of that house there are little patches of white bluebells every spring. There's the occasional one growing through the pavement as well.

They make me smile and remember her every time Smile

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 14/06/2017 21:46

The council have put wild flowers seeds on a lot of the grass verges around here, they're lovely. The nicest thing about it is the poppies randomly sprouting up in the pavement cracks. Brightens up an otherwise dull street.

Oldraver · 14/06/2017 21:48

Tentup More poppies...

If you are pissed off by poppies does that mean you are displeased by daffodils 🌼 , irked by irises and tormented by tulips 🌷 ?

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 14/06/2017 21:52

These are the ones on the dual carriageway near me.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 14/06/2017 21:53

I love it when somebody tries to set the tone of a thread in the first reply and everyone else tells them they're ridiculous Grin

Appreciate the Hannah Montana comment though PP Grin I'm going to use that one. You are ridiculous though. Funny, but ridiculous.

Palomb · 14/06/2017 21:54

Poppies are better for bees than grass so yabu.

Maybe your neighbour has been spreading the seed intentionally? I started a thread about guerilla gardening on here years back and was absolutely roasted.

I still do it though
