To be pissed off with the poppies?

《Semi lighthearted》

Live on a row of terraces, with a small area to the front of each property with a little wall round it. Some have gravel, some grass, some nothing blah blah.

One resident appears to have just chucked a shit load of wild flower seeds down in his and honestly, jt lools bloody gorgeous.

BUT. THE POPPIES?!?!?

Since his garden has really blossomed, poppies are springing up all up and down the street. But not in a nice "ooh look at their pretty garden with the poppies in". More a "this street hasnt waxed its bikini line" way. One big lovely crazy 80s bush of poppies is nice. But the stragglers growing out of cracks in walls, along the road edge, out of random pots on other peoples fronts.

Every day I come home and theres another frigging poppy on the street. They truly are the herpes of the plant world. Which is a shame as unlile herpes, they really are pretty.

I just wish they would stay put.

Picture please. I love poppies

Crikeyblimey · 14/06/2017 20:41

Poppies are lovely. Chrysanthemums on the other hand - can't stand the flowery twats.

dataandspot · 14/06/2017 20:41

RED poppies are symbolic but not other colour poppies. Weird to assume they are red!

JumpingJellybeanz · 14/06/2017 20:41

YABU for your stealth boast about being overrun with poppies. I'd sell my husband into slavery if it meant I could be overrun with poppies. We're overrun with dandelions. They're having a bloody convention here.

Erinys · 14/06/2017 20:43

We have a flat roofed extension and I want to put a wildflower garden on it's roof. DH isn't so keen probably because he can see half the street vanishing in a sea of poppies.

Poppies are awesome, especially those great big heavy ones with their languid heads which make me feel sleepy just looking at them.

ShelaghTurner · 14/06/2017 20:43

I can't imagine it looking anything other than lovely.

Morphene · 14/06/2017 20:43

I have an infestation of buttercups...will the poppies kick them to the kerb?

dementedma · 14/06/2017 20:44

Love them. Your street sounds fabulous.

TrojanWhore · 14/06/2017 20:44

What's wrong with an unwaxed bikin line?

CheeseOfHearts · 14/06/2017 20:45

Hmm...get together with your neighbours and start an opium syndicate?

TroysMammy · 14/06/2017 20:47

I love foxgloves. Nothing beats hearing a bumble bee buzzing with delight as it feasts on the nectar and wiggling his furry little arse as he does so.

I also like poppies but they look awfully sad when their petals drop off one by one.

GinSwigmore · 14/06/2017 20:48

So poppies and forget me nots are easy to grow anywhere? do they do any damage and can they cohabit with ivy? thx

bonbonours · 14/06/2017 20:49

I love poppies and they pop up all down our road where they haven't been planted too. My problem with it is when I actually fucking planted seeds in my garden and none of them grew. So apparently they will grow anywhere except where you want them to!

PoohBearsHole · 14/06/2017 20:50

i have iceland poppies, they are yellow and orange and make me smile. Have a huge red one too but it keeps falling over in a drunken sailor manner 😁

PigletJohn · 14/06/2017 20:50

I've grown poppies, and put some in the neglected verge.

They are briefly spectacular, and I like the seed heads.

A nearby building site has also had a crop this year of a different variety (the seeds persist in the ground and germinate when the soil is disturbed) of a different variety, and they come up at the roadside when it is dug for pipes or cables.

The ground here is quite limey, clay over chalk, I don't know if that helps.

I actually started growing them in 2014, in commemoration of WW1, forgetting that they bloom in early summer, and are all gone by November.

SleightOfHand · 14/06/2017 20:54

Oh, come on, aren't we getting a nice picture.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/06/2017 20:57

SheRaaagh. Not a bit U. We have tons of them around our place.

But then again, I live in California. Grin

CoolCarrie · 14/06/2017 20:58

Ninja poppies, dandelion conventions and buddleia thugs brilliant image there

PinkBuffalo · 14/06/2017 20:59

Ooh OP you could be talking about my house. Cannot keep the poppies down this time of year. Not only that, but ours are opium poppies!! (Beautiful pink though)

leghoul · 14/06/2017 21:03

I really hate daffodils

AliDran · 14/06/2017 21:06

I'm clueless about anything to do with flowers and gardens, but have noticed some lovely red flowers (with bees constantly in them), recently growing in my wild garden (yes, I need to sort it, but can't face it when the twins are awake, and frankly, I'm not doing it if they ever sleep, so it can stay wild for now). Thanks to this thread, i have discovered they are poppies!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/06/2017 21:06

Ive got shitloads of California poppies in my little garden, it's fab. I've got very little that's been actually planted. No they aren't weeds. The honeysuckle that won't fucking flower and takes over every inch it can though can fuck right off. But there's a wren nesting in it, so it's stopping.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 14/06/2017 21:09

AcrossThePond :D

We brought some seeds back a few years back. Seems rude not to share them :)

Every time I look at of my lounge window, the little brats next door have thrown rubbish into my garden.

Think yourself lucky.
