To be pissed off with the poppies?

《Semi lighthearted》

Live on a row of terraces, with a small area to the front of each property with a little wall round it. Some have gravel, some grass, some nothing blah blah.

One resident appears to have just chucked a shit load of wild flower seeds down in his and honestly, jt lools bloody gorgeous.

BUT. THE POPPIES?!?!?

Since his garden has really blossomed, poppies are springing up all up and down the street. But not in a nice "ooh look at their pretty garden with the poppies in". More a "this street hasnt waxed its bikini line" way. One big lovely crazy 80s bush of poppies is nice. But the stragglers growing out of cracks in walls, along the road edge, out of random pots on other peoples fronts.

Every day I come home and theres another frigging poppy on the street. They truly are the herpes of the plant world. Which is a shame as unlile herpes, they really are pretty.

I just wish they would stay put.

I love Poppies they remind me of home in North Norfolk - misses point OP is making !!

MintToBee · 15/06/2017 08:34

I live Poppies. I'm going to go and scatter the seeds around my garden. 🌸🌸🌸
I live Buddleia too but I can't seem to get it to grow in my garden.
I do have Sunflowers though. 🌻🌻🌻

Oldraver · 15/06/2017 08:47

I've been getting ridiculously excited each morning to see what new colour variations have opened up but I think that's it now.

I've braved the bees to take these

OMG, they are stunning! I'm quite jealous.

TeslasDeathRay · 15/06/2017 08:54

I'm quite jealous. This has reminded me that I sowed a load of wildflower seeds in the garden a couple of months ago. Not even one flower has come up. Sad

ToothFairiesHaveNoChange · 15/06/2017 09:22

TeslasDeathRay
I did that a few years back. It took a year for the seeds to grow, the second year they spread like wildfire.

Natsku · 15/06/2017 09:49

I'd happily swap my dandelions for poppies! I wish I had more pretty flowers in my garden as the ones DD planted are only just starting to grow but at least we have a couple of Midsummer Rose bushes and some flowers that I don't know what they are yet as they are not flowering yet (the buds are green and black and grow in long straight thick stems/leaves growing straight up from the ground)

LakieLady · 15/06/2017 10:01

If we are collecting data I like poppies, however my father had an inveterate hatred of hostas for a reason that was never adequately explained.

He was right. Hosta = banquet for slugs.

There is a hosta named after someone who had the same name as me. It was a giant variety. Angry

LakieLady · 15/06/2017 10:09

Scatter some love-in-a-mist around and soon there will be no room left for the poppies.

My NDN used to have a strip of grass up the middle of her drive that became overrun with love-in-the-mist and Californian poppies. It was so pretty and cheerful it was like an instant shot of joy.

Then she had an extension built, and the strip got trashed by builders coming and going, and they've never returned.

LakieLady · 15/06/2017 10:18

I love seeing poppies. But can't believe how quickly they spread in my relative's garden (have been helping to start a veg patch).

They love freshly dug soil. The seeds will lie dormant until the soil is disturbed so that they end up on the surface. That's why there were so many in the fields in the first world war, all the shelling had disturbed the soil.

zen1 · 15/06/2017 10:24

I'd rather have your poppy infestation than the Spanish bluebells that take up residence all over my garden (and surrounding areas) once a yearGrin

BeesOnTheWing · 15/06/2017 10:27

They are a symbol of resilience. They cheer me.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 15/06/2017 10:36

Oldraver,

So pretty! Bet they make any passersby smile.

NapQueen · 15/06/2017 11:17

Ithe wildflower garden. As you can see theyve breached the boundary with force.

Some of these are 100 yards down the street on the opposite side of the road.

There is more so much more but cars were on top.

I love poppies we have crazy straggler ones too they cheer me up and they don't last long. I do love that wild flowers thing your street sounds pretty.

Mustang27 · 15/06/2017 11:31

Ok they are a bit random lol

NapQueen · 15/06/2017 11:35

This was even more random! Had my phone out taking pics of the poppies and found these outside a neighbours house.

Nowhere near a lake. Mental.

Sow some forget me nots theses flower before the poppies.Im not a fan of the big red poppies but love the Californian ones.
If you really hate them you'll just have to remove all the seedheads after flowering.

Mustang27 · 15/06/2017 11:44

And random ducks?!? I think your street is high

NapQueen · 15/06/2017 11:46

Mustang I was worried I was seeing things til I realised the kids could see then too.

We arent anywhere near rural either. No gardens (just yards and patios) within a 5 street radius. Wtf is going on.

Wow, so much more to worry about than Poppies growing in your street. Get a grip! If they were in your garden and you didn't like them then fine.

EastMidsGPs · 15/06/2017 11:58

We occasionally get yellow ones, think the seeds come over to us on birds from a neighbours.

Last year when I went home to N Norfolk the verges were overflowing with poppies, lre than usual. I was told it was because there had been a lot of digging/road works and the poppies reacted to being in disturbed soil.

At work we bought specific poppy seeds to commemorate WW1 and scattered them all over our wildness of a garden .....not a poppy appeared Confused

Why are you wasting your valuable precious time on this forum user1492023986 instead of focusing on worthy issues.

Gosh, there's always one.
