To be fucking sick of ginger hair comments?

My 2 DSs are both under school age and ever since their hair came in I get to hear comments on it from strangers. Sometimes its complimentary, other times it's tuff like "ooh he's going to hate his hair when he's older bless him" or "he's going to get picked on with that hair".

It doesn't ruin my day or anything, I just think "get some social skills you twat" while going 'mmm, really'. I am ginger for Christ's sake, so even if it goes over the boys' heads I can fucking understand it. When I was pregnant with DS1 SIL (who I like) said "oh DH, wouldn't it be funny if you two had a ginger kid? Oh no offense, BlurryFace."

I just feel sick of shrugging off ginger this, ginger that comments. I've been doing it for 20+ years, my own mother has said she thought it a shame I was ginger when I was born. I got all the ginger pubes (what other colour would my pubes be, dumb fuck?) comments at school, but everyone hated me anyway, it was just bonus ammo.

Next time I think I'm going to ask if the person who thinks my kids will hate their hair hate their own nose/jaw/body shape.

I seem to have superpowers as I never burn and rarely use sunscreen, though I always slather the kids in it. Love all the photos, it's nice to see such a range of textures and shades.

I can assure you my boyfriend has bright orange hair and he loves it asa grown up and I think it's the most beautiful hair I've ever seen. I really really hope our kids inherit it- ginger hair is stunning .

liz70 · 15/05/2017 17:26

DD3 has light red hair. We've had nothing but compliments, but then we do live in Scotland, where the incidence of red hair is much higher.

I have red hair and I like it now, though I did get teased at school, but I remember a kind hairdresser commenting when I was about twelve that most people get that colour from a bottle!

I would have liked it if one of my kids inherited my hair but none of them have - perhaps it will skip a generation!

blackteasplease · 15/05/2017 17:33

OK. I was a bit lax with the "no other countries" comment. Wasn't as I meant it, posting in a rush.

I meant to say, countries outside the UK rather than countries other than England - the other UK countries being in a more complex situation with celtic and non celtric ancestry. But I see from PP that countries such as Austrialia with lots of UK heritage have same problems.

What I was getting at is that in other European countries like Italy and France red hair is often seen as very beautiful and desirable.

Babykoala1 · 15/05/2017 17:36

My dad is ginger. I, myself have dark hair, dark eyes and dark skin which I get from my mother and the odd sunbed Blush. When I was pregnant, my in laws said how they hope the kid doesn't get the ginger gene! Hmm I remember thinking how incredibly rude and I couldn't care less what her hair colour was. She's 5 months now and I have no idea what her hair colour will be, at the moment it's slightly auburn/brown but I would be happy for it to get more red. She is absolutely beautiful (she really is) and having red hair will only enhance that in my opinion. Just take comments like that on the chin. People are rude and dumb. I personally wouldn't be able to help myself but comment back on their physical appearance!

I think not. I live in "Viking territory" (which is to say I live in an area where there are runestones littering the countryside. But nobody (or very few) is ginger.

I think it's a typically English thing, both being ginger and (for others) commenting on people being ginger. I don't get this hate for ginger hair either. There's not even a word for it where I am, it's just called "red hair". I'd doubt very much that Vikings brought the red-haired gene, simply because few Scandinavians have red hair now (including Iceland).

Increasinglymiddleaged · 15/05/2017 17:40

I think you should just tell them to fuck off op.

Well it's to the point and is the response I'd expect if I made twatty comments like that to someone.

I just really don't get it tbh, its just a hair colour why would anyone make a big thing out of it?

Bluewombler2k · 15/05/2017 17:43

I am a boring brown and mt DH was dark blond before he went bald and we produced a beautiful redhaired little girl. Complete surprise and I love her hair

Wow Bluewombler, she's gorgeous. One of my cousins has that exact shade of red and the same porcelain skin and she has always looked very striking. :)

Ah shucks! Thank you. She's a bloody menace to society though despite looking like a little angel!

SomeOtherFuckers · 15/05/2017 17:50

Also my DM is v particular about what she wants her GC to look like ... was expecting. Her to be worried when she met DP but she just grinned and I have since learned she's praying I'll have a Weasley clan x

Grapeeatingweirdo · 15/05/2017 17:54

I have the most gorgeous red haired/ginger boyfriend. His hair has darkened to a dark red/brown colour but looks very ginger in the light. I love his red hair, pale eyelashes and porcelain skin. He also has very piercing blue/green eyes. I honestly can't understand why anyone would be so nasty about a hair colour. DP was picked on at school over it and it's nuts.

Grapeeatingweirdo · 15/05/2017 17:57

As you can tell, I think his colouring is absolutely beautiful. I'm an olive skinned, black haired, dark eyed half Turk, so Lord knows how our DC will come out. I'm hoping for beautiful red haired children!

waybalooo · 15/05/2017 17:57

I have two gingers also! Neither dh or I are ginger.. and we love it! We get stopped everywhere and get showered with complements from kind people. Gingers are awesome

Siwdmae · 15/05/2017 18:05

I'm not only a red head - I have bloody curls too Grin that was fun at school

Same. I don't understand the disparaging comments from some people yet others try desperately to get the colour or are madly jealous. It's weird. Maybe it's because we're so unusual. Living in Spain, I had a ridiculous amount of comments shouted at me.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 15/05/2017 18:15

My DD has the most beautiful strawberry blonde hair, and it looks like it has had highlights in the Summer.

When she was born my now exMIL commented: well she definitely doesn't get her hair colour from our side of the family, as if there was something wrong with her hair colour. It proper pissed me off so I read up online that both parents have to carry the 'ginger gene' in order to have a red haired child, and even then there is only 25% chance of having a red haired child. I took great delight in telling her.

My DN who was only about 5 said 'Oh she has golden hair!' the first time she saw her and that made my heart smile Smile

I have dirty dishwater coloured hair and for years have had blonde and copper highlights put in at great expense. It doesn't look as lovely as my DD's tho!

mimiasovitch · 15/05/2017 18:23

A school friend of my dd1 (aged 16), has waist length, gloriously copper ringlets. As she walked past my 4 years niece shouted 'look mummy look- Merida!'. I always seem to hear more negative comments about men rather than women, lord only knows why.

PeanutButterBunny · 15/05/2017 18:25

I'm not from the UK hence I dont understand why people dont like ginger hair. I think its beautiful!

SunshineDeLaSoul · 15/05/2017 18:30

I don't like it at all. But that's my opinion and I wouldn't say it in rl unless asked outright.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 15/05/2017 18:33

Confused

GaelicSiog · 15/05/2017 18:34

Sunshine, I personally don't like blonde and brown hair, so don't worry, we're even Grin Hmm

nicknameofawesome · 15/05/2017 18:34

My DD has the same colour hair as justs DD. The only crappy comments have been from adults. She's got as far as high school with zero negativity from her Peers.
