To be fucking sick of ginger hair comments?

BlurryFace · 15/05/2017 14:02

My 2 DSs are both under school age and ever since their hair came in I get to hear comments on it from strangers. Sometimes its complimentary, other times it's tuff like "ooh he's going to hate his hair when he's older bless him" or "he's going to get picked on with that hair".

It doesn't ruin my day or anything, I just think "get some social skills you twat" while going 'mmm, really'. I am ginger for Christ's sake, so even if it goes over the boys' heads I can fucking understand it. When I was pregnant with DS1 SIL (who I like) said "oh DH, wouldn't it be funny if you two had a ginger kid? Oh no offense, BlurryFace."

I just feel sick of shrugging off ginger this, ginger that comments. I've been doing it for 20+ years, my own mother has said she thought it a shame I was ginger when I was born. I got all the ginger pubes (what other colour would my pubes be, dumb fuck?) comments at school, but everyone hated me anyway, it was just bonus ammo.

Next time I think I'm going to ask if the person who thinks my kids will hate their hair hate their own nose/jaw/body shape.

springflowers. but you just did Hmm

It's a recessive gene.

Both parents have to carry at least one copy and to be born with red hair means you've inherited both copies.

This also means that a carrier of one copy of the gene probably won't have red hair.

Without other genetic factors in play, there is a 1 in 4 chance on being born with red hair if both parents carry one copy of the gene.

There is no chance of being born with red hair if only one parent is carrying the red hair gene.

And there is a 1 in 2 chance of being born with red hair if one parent is a red head and one parent only carries one copy of tbe gene.

The red hair gene is a mutated copy of the Melanocortin 1 Receptor Gene.

Which also sorts out your freckles.

I do think some people are missing up bantar with teasing/bullying

missmoffatt2705 · 15/05/2017 18:39

My son is ginger. In March, it was 'Kick a Ginger' day and he was kicked , albeit gently, by 10 different people. Apparently it's a South Park thing from the US. He was also told by one kid in his form that he (the kid) would rather be disabled than be ginger.
He hates his hair because of all the nasty comments he gets about it.

Janeinthemiddle · 15/05/2017 18:40

Can't believe how rude some people are!

Increasinglymiddleaged · 15/05/2017 18:42

spring it isn't banter. And if you keep it to yourself why are you posting it here? Bit of a weird contradiction there.

springflowers My DS is ginger and freckly and bloody gorgeous. He is not "unfortunate-looking" and I find your comment highly insulting. I presume you look like Greek goddess to be able to give such a judgment on another person 😡

GaelicSiog · 15/05/2017 18:44

My issue is spring, would you tease a black/Asian/Chinese person for having black/Asian/Chinese features? How is that any different to red hair?

grannytomine · 15/05/2017 18:44

springflowers11 why do you think that you understand more than people with red hair? Do you ever say anything similar to black people?

GaelicSiog · 15/05/2017 18:45

I think spring's kids are unfortunate looking tbh. I haven't seen them of course, but she thinks my DD is without having seen her, so I'll totally follow her logic on that one.

Astro55 · 15/05/2017 18:47

Wow Spring aren't you just an awful person!!

This may out me, but I'm too angry to care. I had a local theatre "career" as a pale, bright ginger child. Not once did anyone ever suggest to my mother that she let me dye it. I had a never ending stream of hair compliments. I only dyed it when I went to drama school as an adult and they suggested it there. Bastards. It took me forever to get it back to ginger and I vowed I would never dye it again.

springflowers11 · 15/05/2017 18:54

I didn't say anyone on here has an unfortunate looking child.I was talking about MY opinion on the general attractiveness (or lack thereof) of red hair.
'Gorgeous' is subjective!

ShmooBooMoo · 15/05/2017 18:55

How could anyone dislike this?
Just stunning!

My own is red, and I wish it were redder like the pic I posted that I found on the net(check out my best friend's dog too Smile):

To be fucking sick of ginger hair comments?
GaelicSiog · 15/05/2017 18:56

Yes, Spring. My child is ginger. You are therefore calling my child's features unattractive without having seen her. I am therefore going to say the same about yours, given this ludicrous logic is apparently gospel. Did no one ever tell you if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?

Increasinglymiddleaged · 15/05/2017 18:56

I was talking about MY opinion on the general attractiveness (or lack thereof) of red hair.

What the opinion that you keep to yourself to avoid causing offence? Wink

stitchglitched · 15/05/2017 18:58

This thread isn't about the attractiveness of ginger hair though spring. It is about the abuse and comments people get about it. So your opinion is irrelevant, unless you were doing a live demonstration to prove the OP's point?

springflowers11 · 15/05/2017 19:00

How could anyone dislike this?
Just stunning!

the dog? ;-)
Sorry that hair is ok but it is not really ginger , mousy with hint or red

GaelicSiog · 15/05/2017 19:01

spring I'll ask again. Do you think it's acceptable to "banter" about, or express personal dislike for, black/Asian features. I am genuinely curious as to whether you're racist or just an idiot anti ginger bully.

springflowers11 · 15/05/2017 19:02

I am taking generally about the typical person- there are exceptions to the rule (I expect)

Livinabarnn · 15/05/2017 19:02

I realise I'm very late to this thread, however I wanted to say to all the parents of red heads, you simply can't argue with stupid. Smile sweetly and move on. To the posters that were bothered about having a baby with red hair, seriously your small brains thought that was a worry. You poor darlings. Let's hope you never have anything serious to worry about.

Bluewombler2k · 15/05/2017 19:04

You aren't doing yourself any favours here Spring
