To be fucking sick of ginger hair comments?

My 2 DSs are both under school age and ever since their hair came in I get to hear comments on it from strangers. Sometimes its complimentary, other times it's tuff like "ooh he's going to hate his hair when he's older bless him" or "he's going to get picked on with that hair".

It doesn't ruin my day or anything, I just think "get some social skills you twat" while going 'mmm, really'. I am ginger for Christ's sake, so even if it goes over the boys' heads I can fucking understand it. When I was pregnant with DS1 SIL (who I like) said "oh DH, wouldn't it be funny if you two had a ginger kid? Oh no offense, BlurryFace."

I just feel sick of shrugging off ginger this, ginger that comments. I've been doing it for 20+ years, my own mother has said she thought it a shame I was ginger when I was born. I got all the ginger pubes (what other colour would my pubes be, dumb fuck?) comments at school, but everyone hated me anyway, it was just bonus ammo.

Next time I think I'm going to ask if the person who thinks my kids will hate their hair hate their own nose/jaw/body shape.

Billysykesdog. There are lots of natural red heads in England because many of us are descended from Vikings. Why try to turn it into a national thing ?

I genuinely think ginger hair is something special! But try not to say that IRL as I only have 1 ginger child and 3 brown/blondies.

I have never yet had such rude comments on this thread, but people do comment on it. Even if they are saying something positive, it is almost like they say something to make you feel better for the ginger - when there is no problem!

Hard to reply without sounding defensive/like it is a problem.

"she is so lucky, it's not so common"
"maybe she won't want red hair when she is older but you always want what you dont have, like I wanted curly hair and I have straight, there are plenty of people wish they had red hair"
"she won't hate it, why would she? her hair is lovely"
"you think she will be bullied? only idiots make a fuss about hair colour, we try and avoid idiots anyway"
"bullies can choose anything to pick on people, her hair is fine"

I've used the top 3 replies, maybe I should use
"it's so rude to make personal comments like that" but I am never brave enough!

The film Captain Fantastic (very fantastic film that is nothing to do with anyone called Captain Fantastic or superheroes at all) has the two most beautiful red haired girls playing the daughters. Do watch it if you haven't.

I can't understand why anyone could see red hair as anything other than beautiful. It's so gorgeous and unusual. I wish I had red hair.

I LOVE red hair. I dye my hair red.

Me, too Fanny.

It's a stunning colour and I would give my eyeteeth and probably my gums, to have ginger/red as my natural colour.

You might not like it conference, but unfortunately it's a historical fact. Anglo saxons weren't mighty keen on vikings either as it goes.

YANBU I don't get it at all. It's like some bizarre way to attempt to undermine/belittle people. Please don't think everybody is like this.

Saxons tend to be associated with blonde hair as opposed to red.

Might as well put my ginger hair here too, as you can see the lighter bits on top have really bleached in the sun recently.

I am now considering dyeing my hair ginger. I'm super pale, so I think it would suit me.

I think you should just tell them to fuck off op. Disliking a hair colour is the height of stupidity. I would assume people who hold these views are too thick to reason with and go straight for a basic insult.

I have a Ds with red hair, when he was a baby it was very curly & a sort of beautiful burnished copper colour, all through school he was called names & hated his hair colour, now he is much older his hair has lightened to a strawberry blonde, still hates it & is very self conscious about it, such a shame that anyone should feel like that about themselves.

Anti-ginger comments seem to be linked to prejudice against Jews (who historically have had high numbers of redheads). From Wikipedia;

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_hair#Middle_East_and_Mediterranean

"Red hair is also found amongst the Ashkenazi Jewish populations. In 1903, 5.6% of Polish Jews had red hair. Other studies have found that 3.69% of Jewish women overall were found to have red hair, but around 10.9% of all Jewish men have red beards. In European culture, prior to the 20th century, red hair was often seen as a stereotypically Jewish trait: during the Spanish Inquisition, all those with red hair were identified as Jewish. In Italy, red hair was associated with Italian Jews, and Judas was traditionally depicted as red-haired in Italian and Spanish art. Writers from Shakespeare to Dickens would identify Jewish characters by giving them red hair. The stereotype that red hair is Jewish remains in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia"

I've never understood ginger comments. Three of my cousins are ginger and I think they have the most stunning hair. Hasn't harmed the fortunes Ed Sheeran or Damian Lewis much, has it?

I think that red hair is glorious. If I were to dye or streak my hair I'd choose ginger as I think it looks lovely. DLTBGYD.

I've never understood it.
Both my 2nd cousins have ginger hair. It's fab. It makes them unique. Also, it's rarely thin, usually lovely thick hair.

I suppose the only downside may be v. Fair or white brows and lashes. But that's no biggie and certainly not worth bitchy comments.

I don't understand the negative comments towards ginger hair. Equally I don't understand people falling over themselves to gush about it. It's hair. Literally doesn't matter. Same as skin colour, can't choose what you're born with.
What really fucks me off is adults basically bullying other adults or even children about it. Absolutely pathetic and should be ashamed of themselves.
