To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

In my dialect of English, Amelia has three syllables (with the stress on the second syllable): Ah-meel-ya.

There's no reason for you to alter the way you say the name, OP. Others may say it differently but that doesn't mean you should.

passremarkable · 24/04/2017 08:45

If A-meel-yuh is Glaswegian for Amelia

It's the accent thing... 2nd way is Queen's English

EmmaWoodlouse · 24/04/2017 21:54

I would say A-MEE-lee-a if the person was English, A-MEL-ya if I knew they were Polish, and I'm not sure what if they were any other nationality.

Re: and because we were all a bit posh they were definitely Jool-ya, not Ju-lee-a - to me the first way sounds less posh!

BeaderBird · 24/04/2017 22:33

Second way because that's how that name is pronounced.

My daughter is EMILIA. We pronounce is E.mee.lea. We had to choose this spelling as my ex husband is Italian and if we had chosen the Amelia way of spelling it, all the Italian relatives would have pronounced it A...mel...ea with the main accent on Mel not meal!
this way, everyone calls her E ....mee...lea which is the one that sounds the most like the normal way of saying A..mee...leea.

Hushabyelullaby · 25/04/2017 14:55

Redlock, it's said Muh- van-wee

PattyPenguin · 25/04/2017 18:24

Myfanwy is pronounced Muh-van-ooee. A good way to hear the correct pronunciation is to listen to a Welsh choir sing the song of the same name, e.g.

The name comes at the end of the first line.

Hi op my DD is called Amelia too, we say it the second way (sorry not heard of the first pronunciation) but we call her Millie so it's not an issue. Maybe just say her name as you want it said, people will soon pick up hopefully!

Theflying19 · 31/10/2019 09:42

Always been 'a ME lee yuh'

DadDadDad · 31/10/2019 09:58

I'm sure the OP will be glad for your input 2 1/2 years after she started this thread! Grin

PurpleFlower1983 · 31/10/2019 14:35
