To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

Second way

Rirette123 · 20/04/2017 17:37

hello Vicki from londonvoicecoaching.co.uk here. I hope you don't mind my stepping in.

The neutral vowel 'er' - as in the last little vowel at the end of brother, mother, sister - should be used at the beginning and end of the name 'Amelia'.

It would sound unnatural to pronounce it with an 'a' as in apple because it would lose its flow and 'a' would stand out. The focus is not on the little 'er' either (which should smoothly go into the m ) but more on the long vowel EE, which occurs twice.

er m EE L EE er - because this long pure vowel is more pleasant on the ear. Just as it is wrong to say, 'I would like 'a' cup of tea' instead of 'I would like 'er'-cup of tea' which has more of a flow and the attention is not on the unimportant part. I hope that makes sense.

Second way - and I'm Northern!

Blueflowers2011 · 20/04/2017 17:44

sorry, not heard of your pronounciation either, which is nice by the way.

There are 2 Amelia's in our class - Am-eh-li-a and Am-ee-lia.

And an Am-a-lia spelt and pronounced differently!

Monkeyface45 · 20/04/2017 17:44

Never heard of your first version of the Pronunciation ?? Most definitely the second way is the norm

bananacake1 · 20/04/2017 17:45

Am-meal- yah
Am with a soft "A" like angle not a hard A like Angel

KTC40 · 20/04/2017 17:46

Hi, just skipped through the messages as short on time, yes depends where you live how it's pronounced, accent etc, my DD is called Amelia, pronounce it the second way but don't use it, her Nic name is Millie which we use and tell everyone, easier for her to spell and pronounce at 2 years old lol

exaltedwombat · 20/04/2017 17:47

Yes. Sorry, but another vote for the second way.

Amal07 · 20/04/2017 17:48

My daughter is called Amelia Definitely second way.

IknowIAM1985 · 20/04/2017 17:48

Ahhh-meee- lee- yah

bananacake1 · 20/04/2017 17:48

Millie is short for Millicent though, not Amelia?

LovingLola · 20/04/2017 17:50

The neutral vowel 'er' - as in the last little vowel at the end of brother, mother, sister - should be used at the beginning and end of the name 'Amelia'.

What???

maybeitssomethingelse · 20/04/2017 17:51

I would pronounce it the second way, as it ends 'lia'........ a mee lee a

Spoog1971xx · 20/04/2017 17:56

Yes you are being pretentious. Guessing you are English and you can't expect a foreign pronounciation of a name that is common in English usage.

OwlOfBrown · 20/04/2017 17:57

The second way.

The first would have me want to burst into song:

Ah-mil-yah ... nnn love songs later ... Grin

AyUpMiDuck · 20/04/2017 17:58

YANU soz never heard it reduced to 3 syllables!

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 20/04/2017 17:58

Yep 2nd wAy

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 20/04/2017 18:01

My niece is called Amelia, and we pronounce it A-mee-lee-ya. We're all from the North East if that makes any difference. I've never heard it said any other way, even from my in-laws who are from Cheshire area.

user262728 · 20/04/2017 18:02

Second way!

Lonelynessie · 20/04/2017 18:04

Yep, the second way - Ah-mee-lee-yah.

cordelia16 · 20/04/2017 18:06

I am from New York... and pronounce it the first way. But now living in the UK for a long time, I more often hear it said the second way.

AtlantaGinandTonic · 20/04/2017 18:06

Where I'm originally from (southeast US), we would say Ah-meel-yah. I'll probably out myself but near where I live there is an Amelia Island and that's where we all go to the beach. I seriously considered naming DD1 Amelia and would have pronounced it like the island back home, since that would have been where I got the name. Here, though, where we live, I pronounce the name as most people do, Ah-mil-ee-ah. Who knows what I would have done had we used the name for our child, probably spend half our lives correcting pronunciations!

user1489675144 · 20/04/2017 18:12

The second way... where is the yuh in the name?

I have never heard it pronounced the first way before.

Cubtrouble · 20/04/2017 18:20

Th second way, most common child's name here in sunny Essex

Deidre21 · 20/04/2017 18:23

Second way is how it's usually pronounced.
