To ask how you pronounce Amelia

moonlightmile · 19/04/2017 03:08

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

Second way.

First way sounds mid West US? or Australian.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/04/2017 09:35

Oh god, I've just picked up on PigletJohn and SuperBeagle's posts - Ophelia Balls - really? That's really her name? poor woman!

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 20/04/2017 09:44

Piglet I actually googled Ed Balls' sister! Easter BlushEaster Grin

temporarynamech · 20/04/2017 09:55

I do a cross between the 2 - ah-mee-lee-uh, I don't say 'aah' at the end

MargotLovedTom1 · 20/04/2017 09:57

The first way sounds like how I would say 'Emilia' (not that much difference between the A and E sound at the start) with the short 'i' in the middle.

I would pronounce Amelia the second way.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/04/2017 10:51

Subtle difference tbh, but second way (DD's friend is one)

daisypond · 20/04/2017 11:34

second way.

Cutesbabasmummy · 20/04/2017 11:39

'ah-mee-lee-yah'. The first way is not actually how you've spelt the name.

TeachingPostQuery · 20/04/2017 11:57

I think I'd pronounce the end as yah rather than ee-ah, although it would probably depend on how quickly I was speaking. I think that's rather subtle and really just down to accent.

I've never heard it with the middle vowel as per the i in ill rather than the ee in eel though, that's a bigger difference to me.

Hitmewithit · 20/04/2017 14:16

Are you from the heart of Yorkshire? Why would you pronounce it like that? Second way.

Hushabyelullaby · 20/04/2017 14:20

2nd way (sorry OP), I never knew there was another way of saying it!

MissBel12 · 20/04/2017 14:21

Second way... sorry! Never heard of the first Smile

IsadoraQuagmire · 20/04/2017 14:33

As SoupDragon said, although there are four syllables, it's a subtle sound with a quick transition from the third to the fourth syllable.

Pastamancer · 20/04/2017 14:50

Uh Mee Lee Uh with the uh sound being the same as the last syllable in Natasha, Rebecca, Victoria etc. Never heard it pronounced any other way. Trying to pronounce it the way you do OP gives me a really odd, Dick Van Dyke style cockney accent

greathat · 20/04/2017 14:50

the second one

TheTabardOfDoom · 20/04/2017 16:12

The way it is written ie the second way Ah meel e ah

thesockgap · 20/04/2017 17:22

I've never heard of anyone pronouncing it the first way. I'd say "Uh-mee-lee-uh" as would, I think, everyone I know!

user1483390189 · 20/04/2017 17:24

My name is Amelia and I would HATE anyone to say it the first way! Never heard it like that before?!

GivenupontheGarden · 20/04/2017 17:25

Second way. NEVER heard first way before and quite frankly it sounds odd.

Maireadplastic · 20/04/2017 17:27

I pronounce it second way but much prefer it your way, OP.

1stMrsF · 20/04/2017 17:30

My DD's full name too! I would say Am-mee-lee-ah but to be fair to you I have also heard said the other way (although usually by Americans as PPs have suggested.) I have a very difficult to pronounce name, which is European. When I am in any continental country everybody says it correctly, in the U.K nobody does. I have spent my life correcting people who because they are British (as I am btw) take umbrage. I think if you like it pronounced in a specific way, do that. Your DD as she grows up can change it, or she can correct people- and you can do the same while she is little. Good friends will make the effort IME. There are plenty of similar examples so you are not alone!

CaptainHammer · 20/04/2017 17:31

I'm from the south east and say it the second way!

GinAndTunic · 20/04/2017 17:32

I pronounce it Mangrove Throatwarbler.

Leaspr · 20/04/2017 17:35

My best friends daughter has this name. It's the 2nd way that it's pronounced! I've never known that name to be pronounced any other way...sorry!

Texaschik · 20/04/2017 17:36

Over here we say Ah-MEH-leeah
