To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

I hope you keep pronouncing it your way OP!

My Mum has a name that is pronounced wrongly - not like in the OP's case where it's not wrong it's just a matter of dialect or accent - but like properly wrongly (my grandparents saw the name written down and completely assumed a different pronunciation which no one with her name has at all). Everyone who knows her pronounces her name the way it is said in her case (the strange way my grandparents say it!) all bar one person who insists on pronouncing it the conventional way as if she's trying to make a point. It's quite rude.

Amelie (the French one) is just so gorgeous.

But then again it is Emily with an A instead of an E I suppose!

Pixiebutterfly83 · 20/04/2017 18:34

My daughter is called Amelia, we pronounce it Ah-me-lee-yah, and I personally hate when it's pronounced Am-mil-yuh

starlight13 · 20/04/2017 18:36

Never heard the first way either! It's always A- mee- lee- a around here ☺

GrumpyOldBag · 20/04/2017 18:36

Fuck.

13 pages on this, and it's Discussion of the Day and top of Trending too.

Mumsnet can be dull sometimes.

pollymere · 20/04/2017 18:39

Work in a school where they are all the second one. A regional accent would produce the short end version though.

MrsCobain · 20/04/2017 18:42

I know four in the States and they all say it the second way. I know one in the U.K. And they say it the first way!

I prefer the first way. Say it how you like. Smile

driveninsanebythehubby · 20/04/2017 18:42

Not reading all 13 pages but adding definitely the second way! Never heard anyone say it the first way...

Someone asked about if you were American but from to shows (Grey's Anatomy) they also pronounce it the same way as us.

But if you want to pronounce it the other way, that's your call! Just get used to correcting everyone for a while....

SecretsInSpitalfield · 20/04/2017 18:44

I once had to live in a town where William was pronounced ' Will - yum' 🙄 Instead of 'Will- EE- um'
It grated on me every time they said it!

Also hate it when people say 'Tiff- nee' instead of 'Tiff- a- nee' and don't get me started on the name Britney....

niccyb · 20/04/2017 18:44

The second way is correct. I've never heard it pronounced the first way. I have niece called Amelia. Think back to phonics pronunciation. ia is pronounced as eeaa as in Ophelia and Mia not yuh.

MrsCobain · 20/04/2017 18:44

Some of you are being a bit cunty. Angry

user1475439961 · 20/04/2017 18:51

2nd way

honeyfull · 20/04/2017 18:58

A Meel Yah.

Over and out.

Leapfrog44 · 20/04/2017 19:05

Ah-mee-li-ah. 4 Syllables

My daughter's name is mis-pronounced all the time but it doesn't bother me at all.

Giddyaunt18 · 20/04/2017 19:17

A-MEEL-EE-A

Giddyaunt18 · 20/04/2017 19:18

To pronounce the end of the name as yuh completely misses off the prettiest bit. the lia.

BuildERm0m · 20/04/2017 19:22

I'm from the South East, had a friend at primary school and her name was pronounced the second way. There was an Amelia in the classic children's book The Little Princess and the TV programme - same way of saying. I think it's a lovely name.

Scotland32 · 20/04/2017 19:33

The second way for sure. I have the same problem with my daughter - Alicia. We pronounce it like Alice (so basically like Alissia) but SO many people say Alisha or Aleesha! Drives us bonkers! We live in Scotland and it seems mostly just an issue up here. My English friends largely say it like we do! Also the fault of Alicia Keys who uses Aleesha as her pronunciation. But Alicia Silverstone and Alicia Vikander say theirs right! 😉

Carriecakes80 · 20/04/2017 19:34

Second way! A -meeeeeeee-leeeeeeeeeeee-Ahhhhhhhhhhh! lol

I know 5 Amelias! Three are in my family! My great grt Nan, My Nan, and my youngest cousin. Not saying you can't pronounce it your way, completely up to you, but never heard it pronounced any other way :-) x

Donthate · 20/04/2017 19:42

Second way. Lovely name I wanted it for dd but was put off when doctor friend told me its other meaning.

missdebaroo · 20/04/2017 19:44

2nd way.
Sorry Hun.

gemma19846 · 20/04/2017 19:45

The second way. Never heard anyone pn it the first way

joodey · 20/04/2017 19:47

I pronounce it first way but I'm a northern gal!

ForalltheSaints · 20/04/2017 19:47

Depends on the person. If they are a UKIP candidate I would mispronounce it just to upset the little Englander.

MaisyPops · 20/04/2017 19:53

joodey
I'm northern too and haven't heard anyone say but that way.

2nd way here but with a quicker ee-a on the end and the usual flat northern a sound.
