To douche with tea tree oil before a smear test?!

Was talking with friends today. I have a smear soon. Just mentioned I was going to pick up some tea-tree oil on the way home. They asked what it was for so I told them I douche before these appointments.

I occasionally do it after sex too. In fact I try not to have sex in the few days leading up to an internal.

They were Shock.

Now I feel weird Blush To me, it's like giving my teeth an extra good brush, flossing, mouthwash before seeing dentist. Just preparing myself, you know?

A lot of women in the US seem to have this as part of their regular routine.

By the way, I've been doing this for a few years now and no gynae problems so far.

OP As I remember Kim and Aggie were cleaning filthy ovens, not their lady gardens!!

ThreeFish · 12/04/2017 22:03

Has nobody headed the warnings in the Classic thread about Post Bath Whoosh?
That would be me if I did it before a smear.

Don't do it OP.

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 22:03

LOL, I know but I could use up my tea-tree oil that way Wink

To be fair, I treat thrush with about 15 drops of tea tree oil in 600 ml of cooled, boiled water. Soak a tampon and insert, repeat morning and night. Works without fail. But it is hugely diluted in that form. The best thing for keeping that area clean without issues I've found is baby 'head to toe' wash. Totally ph neutral, huge bottle for 3 quid.

15 drops in 600mls doesn't sound dilute to me :(
Essential oils when used in the bath- they normally suggest about 6 drops per bathful. That is diluted!

JustSpeakSense it's learning words like this : aspergillum that makes me love MN

Just don't use it to name your child.

:o at "I napalm my vagina twice a day". I'm also wincing. In my head you might as well have said you smear Vicks on your bits before a smear.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 12/04/2017 22:18

😊Seriously, warm (never hot) water is all that's necessary. I use the aforementioned Dermol 200/500 generally, in the shower and I have a most fragrant fouf!

spankhurst · 12/04/2017 22:19

I got the remedy from an aromatherapist whilst suffering from chronic thrush ( a year!). It was literally the only thing that worked and has never caused irritation.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 12/04/2017 22:25

This is what you need... or similar. Cleanses and leaves normal flora in situ.

As American women douche a lot and all seem to have a personal gynaecologist at their disposal (have you noticed that on forums?) their gynae doctors don't seem to be telling them not to do it.

Aye, it keeps them in business!

user1487175389 · 12/04/2017 22:31

That's really weird. I thought douching went out in the 1960's? Most people know vaginas are self cleaning.

steff13 · 12/04/2017 22:32

I love my gynecologist, and it will be a sad, sad day when he retires. And he would never tell you it's ok to douche.

Wait... is a douche inserted into your actual vagina? I thought it was more of a vulva thing...

Mind = blown

GinAndSonic · 12/04/2017 22:37

Nobody ever tells me I have a pretty cervix Sad they are usually telling me they can't see it properly and pushing on it with a thing (I imagine a tongue depressor) so they can see the whole thing, then asking me if I know about the MASSIVE cervical ectropian (think that's the word, it's fancy Dr speak for cervical erosion) then apologising because they have made it bleed like a fucker by prodding about so much.
My cervix is not winning any beauty contests. But, my fanny does smell just like a fanny, and not like essential oils or flowers so that's good.

blue2014 · 12/04/2017 22:40

I once gave my vag a really good clean before a smear and the results came back inconclusive cos they couldn't get any of the good stuff so I had to go back (all was fine) so yes, don't douche

Ps. I also have a "beautiful cervix" Smile

Tea tree should not be used on mucous membrane, even diluted.
Also of be very surprised if it does not alter the results of your smear. That's why e ate asked to come at specific points in out cycles as even our own secretions can sheet the effectiveness of the smear.

I've always found plain water makes me feel clean, I've never wanted to douche.

SteppingOnToes · 12/04/2017 23:02

Don't douche before a smear - you can wash away/rub off abnormal cells giving you a false negative result. Oils and lubes can also stop the cells from sticking to the glass slide which can also give you a false negative or insufficient result. I worked in Cytology for 13 years analysis the samples.

And yes we can see sperm in the test...

CauliflowerSqueeze · 12/04/2017 23:09

Yeah great idea. I'd probably pour some bleach in as well and maybe some vinegar and soda. And boiling water of course. Get a wire brush and have a good scrub. Finish off with a bottle of zoflora.
