To douche with tea tree oil before a smear test?!

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 17:40

Was talking with friends today. I have a smear soon. Just mentioned I was going to pick up some tea-tree oil on the way home. They asked what it was for so I told them I douche before these appointments.

I occasionally do it after sex too. In fact I try not to have sex in the few days leading up to an internal.

They were Shock.

Now I feel weird Blush To me, it's like giving my teeth an extra good brush, flossing, mouthwash before seeing dentist. Just preparing myself, you know?

A lot of women in the US seem to have this as part of their regular routine.

By the way, I've been doing this for a few years now and no gynae problems so far.

Please stop douching!! It is so bad for you!

I have a shower everyday and just wash round the outer area with water (and probably some shower gel that's run down my body but I don't deliberately put any there). I've never had any smell from down there even after sex, I've never had bv or thrush. After sex I just go for a pee and then wipe with either toilet paper or an unscented baby wipe (although we're using condoms just now so no mess for me Smile)

Leave your fanny alone, it knows what it's doing.

Midnightprobs · 12/04/2017 23:15

Holy shitting fuck!
Leave the whole lot alone.
I've never ever thought of cleaning the inside of my vag like this.
Never had thrush or any sort of infection.

A vag is supposed to smell like a vag anyway.
The smell is quite nice Grin.

kerryob · 12/04/2017 23:55

Does it not hurt?! Makes me wince just at thought of it!

ligersaremyfavouriteanimal · 13/04/2017 00:18

Completely unnecessary and very very weird!!

elephantcuddles · 13/04/2017 03:56

What's with the posters implying that American women douche? Seriously? We all must need personal gynecologist? Well.. we do have gynecologists. I am American and I don't douche! My mom always told me it's bad for you and never to do it. I only know one person who said it's okay and well... she's an idiot.

The term "douchebag" makes sense.. it's a stupid thing and useless.

elephantcuddles · 13/04/2017 04:12

It's actually offensive and ignorant to group all American women in one category and say they are "obsessed" with douching. I don't know anyone who douches. I know of one lady who is older than me and told me it's fine to do but she is wrong. In high school and college, no one did it.

To visit the USA and see douche products in a pharmacy and then make the (false) assumption that all American women douche just makes you sound daft. I've never purchased douche products in all of my 30 years. Please come back to the states and visit again, you are welcome here.., but don't make false assumptions about American women, especially based on how many products are in a store. Our stores have basically everything under the sun. This is the land of excess.

elephantcuddles · 13/04/2017 04:13

Speaking of tea tree oil, there was a study a few years ago that claimed adolescent boys should not use products containing tea tree oil. It can cause man boobs. I'm not joking.

elephantcuddles · 13/04/2017 04:15

Here's the study in case anyone is wondering.

I'm American and never ever heard of this. We were taught in school NEVER to douche and that's something women who grew up in the 1960s used to do before they knew any better.

Klaphat · 13/04/2017 05:20

It's not odd if lots of women see the gynae in the US - maybe any and all gynae issues are referred instead of being dealt with by the GP, unlike in the NHS. I had to get a gynae referral in Germany just for a top-up of my contraceptive pill - the GP just didn't bother himself with that stuff.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/04/2017 07:18

Ouch

Hopefully you have given this rather strange little habit up

I have seen douche kits for sale in the US. Also when living in North Africa they are quite obsessed with douching (well ex's family were) and full sugaring of the vag. They seemed a little obsessive with the cleanliness of areas below and would talk quite openly about it Shock

I wash myself with a mild soap tried for a while with just water and didn't feel clean

ThisisMrsNicolaHicklin · 13/04/2017 08:05

For the love of God leave your poor vagina alone. I once examined a woman who had what looked like raw mince in her vagina. On further questioning she's been douching with tea tree oil and what I could see was
the damaged vaginal walls, it was very nasty for the poor soul.

Can't remember the PP asking if condoms would change the vaginal pH - semen is alkaline so wearing a condom could have a protective effect on the vaginal pH.

KayTee87 · 13/04/2017 09:01

What on earth is sugaring of the vag ShockShock

LettuceMash · 13/04/2017 09:07

None of your results are valid after doing this, which would make it pointless having it done.

Vagndidit · 13/04/2017 09:14

Please don't blame America for this one. This American has never heard of such insanity. Tea tree oil smells like mouldy woodlands, imo. I'd pity the poor nurse performing your smear and your poor burning fanjo

FGS, just wash normally!!

CoteDAzur · 13/04/2017 09:33

"Sugaring" - WTF?!?! Shock

Chippednailvarnishing · 13/04/2017 09:40

Please don't blame America for this one

I blame Trump and Brexit.

amusedbush · 13/04/2017 10:00

I blame Trump and Brexit.

Me too. Bloody immigrants.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 13/04/2017 10:15

Have you considered ammonia? Or squirting in a couple of bottles of lemon cif and then using a large Brillo pad?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/04/2017 10:17

Sugaring is a form of waxing

I meant full hair removal of the area (it was early didn't mean sugaring the actual vagina)

CauliflowerSqueeze · 13/04/2017 10:25

Or get some large secateurs and chop everything off.

BeALert · 13/04/2017 11:11

American woman here.

Never douched.

Never seen a gynecologist.

Smear test every 3-5 years done by my family doctor.

PollyPerky · 13/04/2017 11:45

I blame Trump and Brexit.

Haven't you see his tweet? 'All women must #douche with #tea tree oil'. It's trending.

yesiamgoingtoeatthat · 13/04/2017 12:02

Fortunately we don't see ads like this any more 😮

Or you could pour petrol into your bits and set them all on fire.
