AIBU?

To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

Massive thank you for the jeans suggestions, I will try them out.

I guess skinnies won't die because everyone needs jeans and when there really is nothing else...but I absolutely refuse to spend a penny of my money on something that makes me look and feel so ugly. I have some palazzo and harem trousers (I know they're not to everyone's taste but I have some kind of alternative harems where the crotch isn't actually at the ankles) and a few tracksuit bottoms. Now the weather's getting warmer I can hopefully find a few casual skirts...

Skinny jeans look great on me, super skinny even more so. I lived in boot cut for years. People didn't realise that I'm quite slim until they saw me in skinny jeans! Boot cut jeans tend to make you look big when you aren't, although it probably depends on your size and shape. Some people shouldn't really wear skinny jeans or leggings.

YANBU though OP. I hate clothes shopping. I had a clear out of jumpers and wanted to get rid of some more, but I couldn't find anything to replace them with so had to keep them. They are years old and looking really worn now. I bought some nice stuff in Oasis a little while ago, and Debenhams last year, sales both times. New Look used to be my go to shop but haven't liked anything in there for ages. Had a look on their website recently and it was the most godawful, shapeless, dire coloured clothes I'd ever seen. I hate Primark anyway and don't even bother with H and M now. Next can be ok for the odd top but not much. I like their jeans too.

I had to shop for 6 year old DD this week and that was a nightmare as well. I forgot now she has passed the magical age of 5 that leggings and tunic tops or nice dresses are too young for her. I have no desire to dress her as a very badly dressed teenager thanks. I wanted some cheap, jersey type summer dresses like she had last year, about £5 each from supermarkets, couldn't get any. Did find a few nice bits in Tesco and couple of bits in Matalan but I was hugely underwhelmed.

See, this is why I have decided to abandon fashion in all its wretched forms. I found myself in Topshop against my will the other week and there were items of supposed clothing that I could not explain at all. I mean I couldn't even figure out which body part was to be coated in the stretchy, tasseled, man made fibre of it all. I concluded it was some species of thong, bred with a Hot Gossip stage costume. It looked like a fast track yeast infection.

I'm not yet 40, but I am too damn old for polyester, tiny pants, stupid shoes and neon. I'm going to channel the French from now on and engage a local dressmaker to make a few things which fit me and suit me. That and I'm going to wear a fuckton of black. Angry

But what happened to just easy fit jeans? Even straight leg means skinny now. I don't want boot cut.

M & S has some lovely tops and t shirts at the moment, some very reasonably priced.
I think if you stick to a " uniform" it's easier to find things.
Cotton Traders are good too, very comfy.

"What's wrong with skinny jeans? confused"

It's like going out in your tights, everyone can see every bit of flab in your legs. Legs look like sausages in them as well. I do have a pair because all the jeans I could find are in that style and dark ones don't look so bad, but I think they're only acceptable because everyone else is wearing them.

Her answer was The Country Collection and I have to say that after the tat I saw today I am almost tempted.

Holy fucking shit.
I would parade around naked before I would wear any of that. Not something I say lightly.

I buy an awful lot of COS stuff, despite it being labelled as clothes from the gulag on here. Also some things from Etsy, labels like Sarah Pacini, Oska, but those last only second-hand (eBay, Le Bon Coin, Vide Dressing, etc).

Get yourselves down to your local charity shop. I did a four hour shift in mine this morning sorting, steaming and pricing summer stock and although there was indeed the total tat of the cold shoulder tops, cheap and nasty polyester stuff and maxi dresses which don't suit anyone except size 0 people who are 6 feet tall we also had lots of normal, classic stuff.

Jeans - without rips and holes - all colours, all styles. White, navy, black, all shades of blue. Cotton shirts, tshirts, print blouses/tops/tunics. Huge selection of cotton dresses.

I am in my mid 40s and well past the "fashion" stage. I think my 11 year old wold disown me if I wore a cold shoulder top. Most of my stuff these days is Fat face, Cos, Boden, Sea Salt, White stuff and basic jeans from Asda as they fit me well. My uniform is jeans/long sleeve t-shirt or tunic and ankle boots in winter, jeans, tshirt and sandals in summer.

I could do with some new clothes but hate shopping in Spring as things get silly sometimes, much like Autumn always has endless drab brown clothes. I'm now fairly fixed in my "style" and don't want trendy crap, just cuts and colours that suit my age, build and colouring.
I'm not keen on catalogues because things never look like the picture. I've become a long tall Sally fan even though I'm only 172cm. Their stuff seems aimed at middle aged women whose style doesn't change much. I used to like Monsoon but went off it 3-4 years ago and they shut our local store.
Agree I want tops that don't show either my bra or my cleavage.

I need some nice, non frumpy long sleeve tops. All I can find around here are short sleeved apart from the bell sleeve monstrosities, I'd set myself on fire cooking dinner.

Asda discontinued my last hope comfy jeans a while ago too and replaced them with jeggings that are crap and stretch out at the arse in no time. Sad

Maybe I should start gluing pom poms to everything and be more on trend. Facebook directed me to some random videos which said this combined with hanging a stick on the wall and gluing tassels to place mats is the key to getting the "Boho" look this season. I must be getting old. Grin

Part of the reason though is "fast fashion" - the teenies want to go into Primark and find something new every week. So design standards slip and it's a "fuck it, that'll do" mentality. 20 or 30 years ago you'd see the same things in shops in April as you would in July.

I live on a vast estate and adult women and their children all dress alike.
Leggings, smocks and ballet flats.

Totally agree that clothes on the high street are the worst they've ever been. Neither me (40) or dd (13) can find anything to wear at all- literally nothing either of us like!
I too hate skinny jeans. I have tree trunk legs but slim waist and top half so the 'trend' for skin tight jeans/leggings paired with shapeless top basically makes me look like a massive potato- not good.

I've got a real issue with dresses this year too. I have two weddings to go to this summer and so many "occasion" dressses are off the shoulder or have silly halter type necks, how the fuck am I supposed to wear a bra with those? And so many of them are in some sort of vile polyester material. I'm not paying £100 for a polyester monstrosity.

YANBU. I have a long body, not unusually long, but can I find a top that goes past my trouser waistline? Can I buggery! Went shopping yesterday and it was mostly crimpelen crop tops. And why are there holes in everything? Hideous

Don't get me started on trying to find a cardigan with long sleeves. Where can I actually buy one?! I'm bloody freezing!

I've always had a theory that 'fashion' is made up by a gang of 'Beavis and Butthead' lookalikes (showing my age no doubt) sitting round a big table sniggering and saying 'how stupid can we make them look this time'...

And if you don't have flabby legs?

Seriously? My skinnies are skinny, not Lycra/thin/skin tight. They are jeans made of denim that are cut close to the leg, not spray on.

I agree with most of this...except I love skinny jeans and like the odd cold shoulder top, I have one I bought in the summer sales which I think is quite nice if I'm wearing a strapless bra. And both pairs of my jeans are skinnies.

BUT too many awful prints around now, far too many crop tops and cropped jackets and cropped EVERYTHING, I hate the trousers and jeans that are like ankle-skimmers or whatever, like they're not long enough to be full-length but not short enough to be cropped, I just think they look like your trousers are too short Confused. And yes all the tassels and frills and stupid huge bell sleeves are all ridiculous!!

Just showed my husband a few of these things, plus some other monstrosities that are currently on trend. He offered to buy a few of them for me, adding, "That way, I can make sure no other men are looking at you."

(He was kidding, he's a good guy.)
