Anyone ditched the dye and gone grey and loved it?

My grey is kind of nondescript. I have tried to let the colour grow out but there's always SOMETHING that comes up mid grow out like a Wedding or something..

The luminous silver grey that I see very often seems to need as much maintenance as highlights etc. But I am sure some people are lucky in that regard..

Would love to know what you do or if you care.. I am weary of the every six weeks jobby now not to mind the cost and the TIME in the salon. Boring.

Yes but I have vitiligo so much of my hair is absolutely white. I thnk it's very ageing, but I have fast growing hair and so had constant roots.

I originally grew it out 'temporarily' for a court case - I was the 'victim' and wanted to look vulnerable in order to nail the perpetrator. So there was a certain amount of calculating psychology behind it. But, that done, I couldn't be bothered to re-dye it and think maybe it only took dye before as I'd been dyeing it for years so it was basically dyeing over dye, not white...

One thing that stops me dyeing it back is my friend, who was about the same age as me, had a terminal illness and was in a hospice, told me she loved it as it was 'striking' and I realised she'd have given anything to live long enough to have grey hair.

I use that cheap violet coloured shampoo and conditioner, some of the time. Some brands seem better than others.

I've got about 4 or 5 inches of grey re-growth so far and I'm in two minds about it. I love the front where I've got silver/white sides but a really dark streak in my fringe. I'm a bit meh about the back though.
However, I live in a pretty dark little cottage so it seems to look ok in the house but when I catch sight of myself in a shop window it looks really light grey on top. It's all a bit of a shock really.

Me! I have a very short crop which means it's uneconomic to dye too. I've been 50% grey (dark brown) since my mid 30's. I get a lot of compliments about my hair colour.

I'm 30 and my hair is around 50% grey now. I'm going to the salon in a few weeks to have it all dyed grey as most of my roots are now grey and I cannot be arsed to dye it any more.

Me too. Have been colouring it for many years and now it is very grey. I am actually pleased with the grey and it is really shiny and soft - should have done it years ago☺

I have never dyed my hair on a regular basis but it has gone from dark with grey bits to grey. I wear slightly different colours now. Bright colours can make me look very washed out. But I think the grey in itself is fine. (Also that if I were to dye my hair to its original dark shade, it would probably make my skin look very pale, and be rather unconvincing. I wouldn't look any younger - except possibly from a distance.)

I was sick of seeing the white stripe at my parting only 3 weeks after dyeing it.

My hairdresser suggested putting in highlights in my brown colour and letting the grey show through gradually (less and less highlights), each time.
It took about 2 years but I didn't have that awful half brown half grey line to deal with.

I love it.

I know we prefer not to refer to FaceBook That social media site on MN - but there's a group called Going Gorgeously Grey on there. Some really beautiful inspirational ladies.

I'm not quite ready to go totally grey yet - but I know I will get lots of support from the GGG ladies when I do.

I don't dye my hair, but I have silver/white hairs popping up more and more these days. Hoping it (eventually) looks as gorgeous as photos I've seen online.

I would love either Snow White or silver grey.

What I've got is neither! But I really would like to see what it actually is all over and not just at the sides and peeping through on top!

Yes, me. I was 60 last week. Discussed "embracing the grey" with hairdresser. She foiled loads of white blonde over head. No dye colours as per usual. The transition will take about a year. Second week in April I get loads more white blonde foils. Then third week in May, she is introducing grey foils in several shades of grey. Most of the blonde & pale caramel colours will be out.

I've been experimenting with London rose bleach shampoo & also the silver version. It washes out in 2 - 4 washes. It's been fun.

Should also add, I did get about 7" cut of overall length. HTH

Does being mostly grey make it easier to put rainbow colours in your hair?

I have dark brown hair with increasing greys at age 38 and am quite looking forward to going completely grey (or dyeing it daft shades).

I tried. But I kept being asked if I was ill. Even my skin looked grey.
I now have a blonde all over colour . With the darker sections, it looks like highlights. Regrowth is much less noticeable.

i'm growing my grey in, everyone loves it and my skin doesn't look as pale.i'm about 75% white now and it was costing a fortune to get it coloured every 3 weeks,.

I should also add I've had to be more tonal with make-up & foundations etc.

I've never dyed my hair - it has just gone naturally grey - I am in my late 50s, I have never even considered dyeing it - I am totally not bothered and I would loathe the faff of having to have it done, not to mention the expense. I only go to the hairdresser a couple of times a year, that's if I can find a 'model night' .. Do people really care so much, certainly not in the circles I move in. So much more important things to care about than the colour of my hair.

There used to be a great thread about going grey and posters showed how it looked. I'm still undecided. I'm afraid I'd look granny style grey rather than chic.

I started going grey (well, white) aged 14. It's quite peppered now (I am mid-thirties). I used to dye it, but since hair dye doesn't take well to grey hair it seems pointless now I have so much grey.

DH says it makes me look distinguished. I think that makes me sound like an old dandy.

I have light grey streaks, mostly though a Morticia style one at my parting at the front, so it kind of surrounds my face, the rest of my hair is darker grey/brown. Now I have completely stopped dying it, my hair is getting in much better condition, and I think it looks better for it

I found temporary colours were actually permanent in my hair, so I have been using henna shampoos periodically to colour, which gradually fade out showing the natural colour, while I grow it out. Just about to have the last couple of inches cut off...but I think I am likely to still colour it occasionally. Its not that I care much what others think, and I think I look good, but people (in shops, the street, in my job etc) literally talk more to me and smile and interact more when I dye my hair. And when I wear make up.

I'm 45 and haven't dyed my hair for 3 or 4 years. I get endless compliments on my hair colour.

I'm going lighter with highlights as a long term transition to grey. Wearing buckets of lipstick helps.

I'm dark blonde and never dyed my hair so letting the grey come in naturally. Decided not to start with dye as I'm not organised enough to go regularly!

Cut my hair quite short in my early 50s and let the grey grow out. Love it. At the moment it is a mixture of almost pure white streaks and a steelier colour underneath. Grown it again to just above my shoulders and it's easier to keep in good condition. I am 61 tomorrow and don't regret it all. Did have to rethink my makeup and the colours I wear though
