Anyone ditched the dye and gone grey and loved it?

My grey is kind of nondescript. I have tried to let the colour grow out but there's always SOMETHING that comes up mid grow out like a Wedding or something..

The luminous silver grey that I see very often seems to need as much maintenance as highlights etc. But I am sure some people are lucky in that regard..

Would love to know what you do or if you care.. I am weary of the every six weeks jobby now not to mind the cost and the TIME in the salon. Boring.

Yes - me !

I will be 49 in June. I last dyed my hair in May 2015. Have had compliments on the grey. It is silver-white around my face, darker at the back.

I do not miss the problem of the roots and the sheer time-consuming faff of dyeing. My hair is in better condition too. It's been the right decision for me, and I will never dye it again.

I meet a lot of people through work, and am noticing more and more ladies in their early fifties ditching the dye, and looking great. It may be a trend right now.

Laiste · 28/03/2017 19:39

I'm bleached pale blonde and a few months ago i accidentally over-toned myself to a nice silver grey. I was on the fence about how it looked, but you know that thing when you know everyone is fishing for good things to say but are just being tactful? Grin

I re-toned it back to normal and DH in particular was very vocal about how much better it was now. And he rarely expresses an opinion unless pushed. So - i won't be embracing the grey when it comes.

FindoGask · 28/03/2017 19:43

salt n pepper here and very happy with it. I have a short choppy style, my natural colour is black, and I'm probably 30% grey. Sometimes I think about dying it again but never for long. (I'm 39).

dementedma · 28/03/2017 19:50

I'm the oldest of three sisters, all in our fifties.
They have both gone grey, I dye mine. It is always assumed that I am the youngest. I'm happy with that.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/03/2017 20:02

I was growing out my dark brown dye but decided I looked at bit too Alistair Darling! (Grey hair and black eyebrows ) so got the hair dye back out and reverted to colouring it again .

SkippiDiDoDah · 28/03/2017 20:03

I did the drastic pixie cut a few years back and grew it out from that. Love being free of the dye.

Sweepingchange · 28/03/2017 20:06

I wish! I've gone through the awful process of growing colour out and am left with unsightly mix of black at back, white/grey at front and salt and pepper in between. It doesn't suit my skin tone and I look awful.

Haven't done anything since though because hesitating between going for salon cut and colour (do I want to commit to the time/expense every eight weeks - can I be arsed??) or going back to lighter packet colour.

So just generally dithering and looking and feeling fat and awful.

DaisyBlameless · 28/03/2017 20:08

I'd love to see some photos, I'm seriously considering letting mine grow in.

sonjadog · 28/03/2017 20:08

I grew mine out when I was 38. Took a couple of years and when I was done, I decided that there was too much grey and I felt it aged me. I got a lot of compliments for it, but I am very grey around the front and that´s the bit I see, while apparently if you see the whole thing, it still looks mainly brown. I did highlights for a few years, but it was expensive and took forever to do, so last summer I stopped. Now I am going back to the grey look I had before, but it doesn´t seem to bother me any more. I think it feels more age appropriate for me.

rightsofwomen · 28/03/2017 20:15

I'm doing what fair is doing and getting hilights done as they grey grows in.
I love it.

rightsofwomen · 28/03/2017 20:17

I am naturally dark brown (see brows) so this is all hilights which will just get more and more grey.

Anyone ditched the dye and gone grey and loved it?
Ragwort · 28/03/2017 20:21

but people (in shops, the street, in my job etc) literally talk more to me and smile and interact more when I dye my hair. And when I wear make up - I am grey and can't seem to stop people talking and interacting with all the time Grin - sometimes I wish people would just leave me in peace must be my riveting personality Grin.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2423639-For-those-of-us-going-grey There are some pics in here - tis an old S&B thread.

pointythings · 28/03/2017 20:35

I am 49 and gave up dye when I turned 40. My hair is naturally dark and I am lucky that my grey comes in lovely silver stripes. I get asked who does my highlights But I have a warm skin tone which copes with grey well. I think if you like what you see in the mirror then it is right for you.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 28/03/2017 20:36

Some silver on top.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 28/03/2017 20:37

I hope pic posts this time ( technophobe)

puddingisgood · 28/03/2017 20:41

Breakfast that's gorgeous!

Doobydoo · 28/03/2017 20:41

I used to have v dark brown hair. Now tis mainly silvery/white....quite sparkly which i like. If i don't look after it I think I look like the catlady from the Simpsons but basically I like it as cannot be arsed and can't afford high maintenance. Texture is different but use conditioner.

P1nkP0ppy · 28/03/2017 20:44

I'm completely silver, have been for 15 years (now 63) and I love it.
I started going grey at 18, coloured it for years and it's far easier to care for it now - I use clarifying shampoo, never need conditioner, occasionally use A Touch of Silver products.
I'm growing it into a shoulder length bob from short layers.

MiddlingMum · 28/03/2017 20:44

I've never dyed mine, it's now a silvery grey which I quite like. I've never worn make-up either, although I do get my hair cut well regularly.

The usual comment on my looks (if I ever get one) is that I'm very smiley, which is worth far more imo than any bottle of dye.

Albadross · 28/03/2017 20:49

Mine's almost white on the sides and a bit at the front, then just salt and pepper through the rest. I'm 36 and I had a pixie cut a year back but I had no clue that's I'd look Hitler-esque with the black top and white sides so I died it a couple of times. My granny had a white streak at the front and I desperately wish mine was like that! I'm not sure what to do about it now, because I hate roots and hate dyeing it but I also hate how it looks without!

80sMum · 28/03/2017 20:51

I can't yet bring myself to let go of the dye! Maybe I will do what my mother did and allow myself to go grey when I am 80. I think right now, it's not for me. It would be too aging.

But it's expensive, so I might change my mind in a few years when I have retired. I spent 3 hours and £130 in the hairdresser's today! Luckily for me, my hair grows slowly and I only have it done about 4 times a year.

thatsnotmyusername · 28/03/2017 20:52

Glad I found this! I am about 4 inches into growing my grey through. Going to hair dressers this week and I was having a wobble and thinking of giving up but this has given me strength!

LouiseBrooks · 28/03/2017 20:54

I gave up dying and now mine's a bit badgerish tbf. Silvery front and parts of the top and the rest is still brownish. I put coloured streaks through it (Bleach hair crayon, washes out, comes in several colours) which makes it look a bit better but I long for the day I can look like Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. My mother had beautiful silver hair so I'm hoping I end up with hair like hers.

previously1474etc · 28/03/2017 20:56

I used to have lots of blonde highlights in dark hair so it has gradually become noticeable that there is more grey, I am not doing the highlights as often and am hoping it will go grey quickly, on top at least.
