Anyone ditched the dye and gone grey and loved it?

My grey is kind of nondescript. I have tried to let the colour grow out but there's always SOMETHING that comes up mid grow out like a Wedding or something..

The luminous silver grey that I see very often seems to need as much maintenance as highlights etc. But I am sure some people are lucky in that regard..

Would love to know what you do or if you care.. I am weary of the every six weeks jobby now not to mind the cost and the TIME in the salon. Boring.

I haven't dyed my hair for years. Ever since Schwarzkopt got rid of the only dye I wasn't allergic to. What is left is a mousy brown grey colour which I am well aware is neither grey nor brown and doesn't do anything for me.
I have been told to go grey and not fight it but I haven't been fighting it for 20 years and it just goes more and more mousy not grey

I'm 43 and went grey 2 years ago, grew it out, cut it off etc. My pre-grey colour was dark brown and my natural colour now is about 90% white. I so desperately wanted to love it,to ditch the colour etc but I looked so old and washed out, even with my funky haircut and bright new lipstick. I'm just not ready for it.

I found a fabulous home colour kit that I order online, no ammonia or ppd etc, gives me great natural colour, shine and tones, not blocky at all, will continue with that til I decide to try again. I'm now in a role at work with a lot of responsibility and need to look very groomed though ..grey roots will not be an option for a while.....

After reading this thread I'd like to have a go at ditching the dye. I haven't seen my natural colour for 45 years... I dyed it at first to achieve a different colour and I dye it now to cover the grey.

My hair is quite long and has quite a build up of colour so I want to remove it - the colour, not the hair. Has anyone experience of using the colour remover Colour B4? I bought some yesterday after reading this thread but now I'm getting jittery as I don't want to damage my hair.

It depends on what colours you have been putting on your hair?

grannytomine · 30/03/2017 11:32

I'm in my early 60s and naturally a red head, bit darker than ginger if you know what i mean. I have the curse of the red head, my hair has lost its redness and gone darker, think battle ship grey maybe? Not sure how to describe it. It is too dark and makes me look ill. I wouldn't mind white hair or silver hair but I have to dye my hair as the colour it is just doesn't suit me. I have thought of having it dyed a silver grey but that would be as much bother as dying it back to my natural colour. Not sure what to do really.

My hair is very dark brown and when younger had a bluey tint and almost black hair.
Since being 29 it has had the odd streak of silver and i dyed it until about a year ago.
It's quite long, very curly and more silver is appearing all the time, I'm 50 now.
I can't wait until it's mostly silver now as still mostly dark brown atm.
I'll never dye mine again and I too use the cheap purple for silver hair shampoo and conditioner.

sobeyondthehills · 30/03/2017 13:48

I have never dyed my hair and have had grey/silver in my hair since my mid twenties.

I have no intentions of dying my hair. I am thinking in the next five years I will probably be completely grey and then will see if I like it, if not I am going purple

I dye my hair myself with permanent dye (L'oreal). The ends have got darker and darker and I think even if I don't decide to stay grey I would like to dye it a lighter colour.

I haven't a clue what my hair is like underneath the dye - it'll be very interesting!!

OP here.

I think this time I will have a good go at just doing it and let the colour grow out.

But tbh the last time I did that it was a pain and I was embarrassed because the grey was just like the regrowth ((roots) of dark haired who go blonde. Even tho it was the opposite colour showing!

Does anyone know if I can get the mid brown dye stripped out or something, and start from there?

Afraid to ask hairdresser you know what they might say, and cost a Fortune!

But so be it. Aim going to try.

I really just want to go au natural.

Im 43 and have dark brown hair....my grey is coming through more and more but i shall just keep dyeing it....i dont think i will ever want to let it go grey.....

Gramgram · 30/03/2017 17:39

I've only tried to dye my hair once in my thirties, I'm in my fifties now, but I had a nasty reaction to the hair dye. So I just tell DGD I'm going naturally blond.

JDEE72 · 18/04/2017 13:14

I've had enough of hair dye and actually stopped using permanent dye in December 2015. I then stupidly used semi permanent dye in August last year just to even it out a little, as it was a mix of grey, orange, brown and red (nice) and the rotten stuff has stained my hair cuticles. The dark brown dye has come out but it's left a stain on my regrowth. So...I have 5 inches of grey, 5 inches of stained grey, 3 inches of blorange and 4 inches of red/black. I hate it. I had 10 inches cut off a few weeks ago and aside from a bleach bath there's not much I can do. I used colour b4 last year which left it orange and stinky for 3 months. Never ever again.
