Anyone ditched the dye and gone grey and loved it?

My grey is kind of nondescript. I have tried to let the colour grow out but there's always SOMETHING that comes up mid grow out like a Wedding or something..

The luminous silver grey that I see very often seems to need as much maintenance as highlights etc. But I am sure some people are lucky in that regard..

Would love to know what you do or if you care.. I am weary of the every six weeks jobby now not to mind the cost and the TIME in the salon. Boring.

Stick with it, thatsnot. You are almost at the end of the worst bit now (as I found it). I got my hair cut in a short bob for years as it meant less to grow out and it was quite satisfying seeing the coloured bit get shorter and shorter.

Thankyou pudding

IDontLikeMyUsername · 28/03/2017 21:13

Decided I had had enough of colouring my hair about a year ago. It wasn't good for the condition and the cost was an issue.
I've got about 6 inches of non-coloured hair now. Mostly pretty grey at the front and still darkish brown at the back.
It's difficult sometimes seeing the very silver at the front but I don't dwell much on appearances so can just get on with being me.
My friends don't like me not dyeing my hair as it reflects badly on them, revealing that, yes we're all the same age and yes that is mid fifties and yes, we're all grey to some extent but some of us colour our hair. I think they're horrified really.

CatsMother66 · 28/03/2017 21:13

Me and I love it. In my forties the bit of grey in my mousey hair was very ageing and made me look so drab and worn out. But now I am quite white it suits me and looks good as it is. To make it stand out more, I give myself bleach highlights and put a platinum blonde toner on to make it as Snow White as I can. I love it and stand out. It makes me more aware of women who have ditched the dye and I have seen some stunning ladies with greying hair. I usually complement them if I can.
I don't find it ageing. Dress sense, the way you move and hair colour that suits you makes you youthful.

How did u do the transition from light brown to grey..

Lingotria · 29/03/2017 01:02

Lady at work went grey and looks awful, as it's a steel kind of colour that washes her out and makes her look 20 years older. I think it depends on your shade really

Graphista · 29/03/2017 01:52

I stopped dying not as an active decision but due to not physically being able to.

I've unusual hair no idea where from seems a genetic combination as naturally it's mousey/auburn ginger /blonde/silver grey (since late 20's Shock )

I used to dye it a light brown/auburn.

My grandmothers continued to have theirs dyed until they were very elderly & ill.

My mother until a few years ago continued to dye hers the same dark brown she had since her 20's, she's now late 60's and the dark brown was very unflattering because as we get older our skin becomes paler too. She has arthritis and so doesn't find it comfortable sitting in hairdressers chairs for long periods now which is why she stopped. It looks far better in her natural colour which is a dark silver.

She thinks I'm brave for not dying mine but she also thinks it wrong I have long hair as I'm 44 and apparently too old for it (I REALLY don't suit short hair).

I think cuts can be far more ageing both in terms of flattery and in betraying what era you experimented with hairstyles in.

I remember thinking as a youngster how old fashioned a 'shampoo & set' style my grandmothers favoured is, then in recent years I realised that it wasn't old fashioned to them as that was the fashion when they were in their 20's/30's.

Now I can pretty much guess someone's age from their hairstyle. Although bobs can be tricky as that can make the wearer a 60's era person or 80's era.

WesternMeadowlark · 29/03/2017 03:52

I've never dyed mine.

My haircare routine is sulfate- and silicone-free because I'm also curly, and I've found that a side-effect of that is that, because there's no build-up on the hair, the grey/white is really bright and vibrant. A lack of dullness can make a huge difference.

I don't know how well straight hair responds to sulfate-/silicone-free treatment - a quick Google hasn't helped, sorry, there are probably specialist forums where that's answered though - but it might be worth a try.

SerialReJoiner · 29/03/2017 06:02

What brand shampoo do you use? I really need to start using decent stuff.

TimeForChang333 · 29/03/2017 06:26

I dont dye my hair
I would rather spend my time and money doing something else that I enjoy
I dont have the type of job that "requires" hair to be dyed

The generations before me did. The photos show all the men with white hair and the women with brown hair which looked totally unnatural

However, I have received several comments that I should dye my hair
I always say x male is the same age as me, would you suggest to them that they should dye their hair ?

People that dont know me think I am alot older

I am thick skinned and just smile

HookandSwan · 29/03/2017 06:47

My mums friend is allergic to hair dye. Her hair is a really nice steal grey colour she looks really good it suits her. Grey suits a lot of ppl really well.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/03/2017 06:48

i want to do this but lmy hair grows so slowly and the roots piss me off. I dye my own hair and find that expensive enough i can't fathom psying £40-£50 for someone else to do it especially every 6-8 weeks. And the whole going to the hairdressers id rsther use the development time to relax on my bed with a cup of tea

scaryteacher · 29/03/2017 07:18

I grew my colour out 3 years ago, and I looked ill. Once it was all out, I lasted about three weeks before heading back to the hairdressers and getting the colour and highlights back.

AstrantiaMajor · 29/03/2017 08:16

I tried to do it by having my hair cut short. I found it really aging I have sallow skin and dress in dull colours so that did not help. It was great to have no faff though. I have now gone back to having silver highlight put in every three months. I still have to use a purple toner, shampoo and conditioner to stop it yellowing. I do keep it very short though so now it looks silver instead of sludge grey.

Silver hair is great, but I don't think many people have it naturally.

Catsize · 29/03/2017 08:21

I'm starting to go grey - late 30s - and have no intention of colouring it.

CatsMother66 · 29/03/2017 12:46

Havanaclub, if you are asking me... I used the temporary wash in wash out colour which matched by hair completely. It washes out in about 5/8 washes. It contains no ammonia etc and just covers the hair as opposed to semi permanents which are permanent. It was a potch dying each week but it left me with no roots and one day when the grey took over, I stopped.

Sunnymeg · 29/03/2017 13:59

I started going grey in my mid twenties and after about five years of dyeing it, decided to go with the flow. Imagine my surprise, when after losing my hair due to having chemotherapy in my mid forties, I found it grew back as its original brown colour. . Now I am mid fifties, it is starting to go grey again and I won't be dyeing it.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/03/2017 20:26

My mother's family start to grey quite young, especially the men, but retain their hair well into their 80s. My gran, mum and now me (60) eventually go white, and our faces look okay with (VERY well cut) short hair.

My DSis is still working overseas and has hers coloured back to youthful for professional reasons. In the intense sun, it has a tendency to bleach to ginger, so it's a hassle for her. I understand why she does it, but the frequency of colouring appointments would piss me off.

sonjadog · 29/03/2017 20:38

At what point did you all start using shampoo for grey/silver hair? I have definite grey strands and am now very grey at the front, but overall I am still mainly light brown. I´d be interested in seeing if the special shampoo makes a difference to the colour, but I don´t want to start too early, or does it have the same effect on the naturally brown hair?

poisonedbypen · 29/03/2017 20:39

I'm not a Theresa May fan, but I do think her hair looks good.

MeganBacon · 29/03/2017 21:13

I've grown mine out and love it and get lots of compliments, but for it to look good it still needs maintenance - really sharp cut in a style that isn't frumpy, proper blow dry although I do it myself, and lots of product. I also look really washed out if I don't have quite a bit of make up on these days - lippy is a must and eye brows seem to need proper attention to balance it all out. I'm not sure if overall it's less bother, but I do prefer it.

TasLondon · 29/03/2017 21:15

I went grey a few years ago and I love it. I used to henna my hair but the roots were coming through quicker as I went grey, if you see what I mean. I had a short cut and I'm loving the lack of hassle. No dying, sometimes no combing! No straightening or curling, it's great, especially on holiday!

Twopeapods · 29/03/2017 21:48

I started going grey in my late teens. I'm 27 now and have dyed it before but I've let it grow so looking pretty grey now. The other school mums put me in my mid 30s and were shocked when I told them my actual age. Been feeling pretty down about it so I think I'll go back to the dye. Sad

crapfatbanana · 29/03/2017 22:38

My hair is dark brown (fading fast) with a couple of nice silver streaks and lots of random straggly greys/whites. I'm 39.

I stopped dying it and had it cut short a few years ago, simply because I didn't have the time or money for the upkeep. I didn't really have much grey hair then, just the odd one or two, but in the last couple of years it's greyed quite a bit. Thankfully I don't have to grow out any dye. I used to love dying my hair but wouldn't go back to it. The only thing I'd change about my hair now is the condition of it; it's much thinner, frizzier and coarser than it used to be. I also can't seem to find the right style to suit my face anymore.

Redken24 · 30/03/2017 02:02

Sorry not going to read the whole thread but for less yellow or build up.
Schwarzkopf do a silverizing shampoo doesn't dry your hair out.
Fudge do a blue violet shampoo for blonde but will tone white silver hair down.
Have also heard good things about la riche toners.
