Every movement or viewpoint has extreme ends, every large group has people who disagree in it. I am a feminist but do not agree with everything said by everyone else who calls themselves a feminist. I am to the left politically but do not agree with everything everyone else who is to the left says or does. I do not consider that a good enough reason to throw out my principles and walk away from the left completely, not do I think it signals a terrible failiure of the left. That would be silly and short-sighted. A movement in which everyone is the same goes nowhere.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 18:57

Well, he's moved on to pissing off NATO again.

Pres. Trump: "We strongly support NATO, we only ask that all of the NATO members make their full and proper financial contributions."

originalbiglymavis · 06/02/2017 18:59

I think that's what passes as a compliment.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 19:02

The problem isn't that they voted in a Republican president. We've had Republican presidents in the past. The problem is that they voted in a president with what appears to be no self control, serious mental health issues, and hangers on that espouse very un-American, Nazi-style extremist viewpoints that they want to inflict on the rest of the country. Sadly, some people in the country also have those viewpoints (to lesser or greater degrees) and enough of it rings their bell to make them want to continue to support it.

Deejoda · 06/02/2017 19:04

Quite Bigly
Times are a-changing.
When was the last time any politician got an 80% majority vote? That is why the Boris poll is clearly an alternative fact

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 19:04

the right are criticising the polls conducted by CNN, CBS and Huff po, so its selective bias that is being called out..

And they deserve to be critiscized if they are polls of their readers/viewers and are as rubbish as the express poll.

The point is not who reports the poll, but who carried it out.

BarbarianMum · 06/02/2017 19:05

Actually, the single thing DT has said that I even halfway agree with is that all NATO members should pay their fair share.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 19:07

My concern re NATO is that he has swung wildly on it. Yes, he met with May and SHE announced that he was committed to it. That means a sum total of SFA.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 19:09

I think he will now focus on any negative he can, so he can then say "that's it - we can't stay in NATO, they're not FAIR!!!"

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 19:11

ts funny seeing a lot of people on here talking about polls and yet disregard polls around brexit and tory support, a lot of confirmation bias is going on

The ONLY polls on here that have been discussed was the Daily Express poll.

They did an online poll of Daily Express readers. Then quoted the figure they got as its headline. You had to look deep to find out HOW the poll was conducted.

However - polling is a very difficult activity. Getting the right questions so they aren't leading and ensuring it's weighted properly. Very very difficult.

The Muslim poll recently was criticised - as it was only carried out in areas where 'you would find Muslims' - so 20% plus population on the census. By definition, you are introducing bias to your survey - that did not stop the media reporting the results and also misinterpreting them - the Sun was forced to apologise after it got it wrong.

But getting it wrong means nothing - the headline was out, retweeted and it stuck. An apology hidden inside means nothing.

Watched him speak, it was disturbing to actually hear how self obsessed he is

Justanotherlurker · 06/02/2017 19:12

You cant brush off identity politics as just a "thing", self reflection on why it's eating itself is not only it's needed but is the corner stone of why Trump bloody won

It's a pity that the gamble doesn't seem to be paying off at the moment.

As much as I dislike Trump, this argument is facile

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 19:13

This is regarding his speech that he is giving NOW.

And conversely a lot of the right are criticising the polls conducted by CNN, CBS and Huff po, so its selective bias that is being called out

Any poll needs to be checked carefully - who was asked, how were they chosen, what were they asked.

That's why critical thinking is so important - open, honest and transparent facts.

You see it ALL the time on MN - people quoting data, facts and statistics repeatedly - but you need to go to the source.

Remember Andrew Wakefield and autism - the original paper was rarely analysed. People just looked at the headline data and jumped to conclusions.

We need the bigger picture and the full facts.

Lots of grizzly bears in schools jokes about today, aimed at DeVos.

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 19:19

In what way is Trump not completely incompetent?

He won the election for many reasons. It might make many people feel comfortable to talk about snowflakes (which your man does frequently) and identity politics, but again, this was an election that the republicans should have won easily.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 19:20

To clarify, she stated that guns had a place in schools when answering questions at the Senate interview. Her reason? In case, you know, of grizzly bears in school. I kid you not.

Understanding statistics is so important. I listen to More or Less and I trust that.

We are lied to all the time. By everyone. A simple fact can hide a multitude of truths. Whenever someone quotes you a statistic, ask them what that actually means. How do they know? How were things defined?

80% of statistics are unreliable. Fact.

Yup, you're a more or less listener! Grin

Justanotherlurker · 06/02/2017 19:24

The ONLY polls on here that have been discussed was the Daily Express poll.

Again, this self bias is astounding, no one takes the Express seriously, absolutely no one, until it seems that it can be used as a yard stick of public opinion to bash.

CNN, CBS, Huff po, even bloody Buzzfeed (self reported polls) are used as "evidence" of public opinion .

News outlets selecting "polls" to reflect their readers is nothing new, Guardian, Mirror and the shit show that is the Independent are just as guilty as the Telegraph/Mail etc.

Both sides are being played like a fiddle, did you happen to retweet the "news" yesterday that the statue of liberty was in fact a muslim by any chance ?

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 19:25

Can you imagine a PM going to the Army and saying 'you like me"

I just can't.
