Under the rules he is the president, "most people" are not what decides the president as it stops Mob rule, its shit but the rules haven't changed and both knew what the game was

We know. However, this isn't controlled goading, it's somebody losing the plot.

and yet disregard polls around brexit and tory support, a lot of confirmation bias is going on..

We have only critiscized polls that are clearly rubbish e.g. The Express Poll of its own readers.

After 8 years of Obama being gridlocked and failing to turn water into wine, and with an unpopular democratic candidate, it was the republican party's turn to win the election. They should have been able to find somebody vaguely competent.

Bigly

I can take your word on that I am so tired of the no-platforming and moves to restrict free speech. I was always left wing but some of it has crossed over the line

BarbarianMum · 06/02/2017 18:28

My experience is that rich, educated white men are very quick to defend their right to free speech without political correctness and absolutely furious if that same free speech is used to point out their entitlement and privilege. Unfortunately this doesn't happen as often as it should.

There are of course plenty of issues with the left. One of the issues is that the left has a tendancy to spend far to much time in fighting, arguing about who is the bestest leftest, and constant self reflection on their faults and how they just need to understand more and speak more clearly and then everyone will get the message and just be nice to each other. Perhaps if we had spent less time on self reflection and more time actually confronting the rise of the right we would not be in this situation.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 18:34

You don't have to take my word for that mercy there is Google. Here is a link to Wikipedia article on Dennis Prager who set up the YouTube channel
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Prager

Some choice excerpts
"In 2009, Prager started a website, "Prager University", offering five-minute videos on various subjects such as the Ten Commandments, the minimum wage, the Middle East, Global warming, and happiness with a conservative perspective.[6] Video contributors are varied and include columnists George Will and Bret Stephens, British historians Paul Johnson and Andrew Roberts, American Enterprise Institute President Arthur Brooks, former Prime Minister of Spain José María Aznar, several university professors, and Prager himself. According to Prager, he created the site to challenge the "unhealthy effect intellectually and morally" of the American higher education system.[7] In 2016, fifteen of these videos have been partially censored as "restricted" by YouTube.[8]"

How about this bit

"Prager wrote in 2006 that Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, should not be allowed to take his Congressional oath using a Qur'an because American civilization has been based on the Bible and its values, and an oath on another religious text would be unprecedented"

Sorry, but I do the think this is the person to take lecturers about religious freedom from.

One bit from the article ginger

"“We are going to introduce new measures: no migrants, not even those who have already issued their request for asylum, can move freely. Whether they are entitled to political asylum, refugee status or anything else,” said Zoltán Kovács on a visit to London."

The question now is who will follow their lead?

I also heard concern among German govt, barely above a whisper but there, that American democracy can’t be taken for granted anymore.

MercyMyJewels · 06/02/2017 18:42

OK thanks Bigly. I certainly would not support that. It's difficult; the left are eating themselves. I remain 'Liberal' and left leaning but so much leftie stuff is bonkers now

Justanotherlurker · 06/02/2017 18:43

We have only critiscized polls that are clearly rubbish e.g. The Express Poll of its own readers.

And conversely a lot of the right are criticising the polls conducted by CNN, CBS and Huff po, so its selective bias that is being called out..

Again, self reflection...

Yeah, just look at the vitriol Laura Penny received on twitter by trying to reach out and get an alternative point of view.

This. Very much.
And Trump almost lost the election, which should have been an easy win for GOP.

SingaSong12 · 06/02/2017 18:47

Just place marking and a big hurrah to Brecow and the MPs that support him. I agree it's unlikely Trump actually wanted to address Parliament. i doubt it will make any difference to him even if the media in USA report it, but maybe it sends a signal that Parliament (if not the government) have noticed the type of man he is.

Perhaps if we had spent less time on self reflection and more time actually confronting the rise of the right we would not be in this situation.

The problem is that you have muddied the waters of the "right" and it has become an almost authoritarian model that you would rather disregard those who have abandoned you and think that doubling down is the way to go

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 18:52

well poop. It's only available in the US.

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 18:53

The pendulum swing that is happening is not some "schtick" that can just be brushed under the carpet without any form of self reflection

No, I watched the video. It was basically blah blah blah identity politics. Having to bake cakes for gay people and nuns paying for abortions. It had good graphics but the argument was non-existent.

Plenty of people suffer discrimination, Peter Tatchell has spoken up for religious cake bakers without becoming a Tory and in the UK the NHS sometimes funds abortions paid for by tax payers.

I'm not using a broad brush. I can understand the logic in taking a gamble on Trump. It's a pity that the gamble doesn't seem to be paying off at the moment.

MakingMerry · 06/02/2017 18:53

Speaker John Bercow has opposed Trump addressing the Houses of Parliament on the grounds that:

I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.

While I'm not sure I agree that the House of Commons has shown itself hugely committed to combating sexism, but his comments certainly provide food for thought.
