Watches it today, first time in years.

He makes his wish blah blah blah then basically runs away from home and leaves his mom to think he's been kidnapped. He ends up on a milk carton so obviously police etc involvement. No doubt a national campaign for his return.

The beat friend goes along with it despite the fact he must have some idea of what's going on at home re campaign.

He gets a job with very little OD but hey its the 1980's and then clearly has sex with one of the female characters just after he's turned 13.

She thinks he's more mature than the previous guys she's been with which speaks volumes about their opinion on men.

When he finally gets the guilts, its his school and friends whom he see's and who male him feel nostalgic, not his mom.

When the Police interview him to see where he's been for months what will he actually tell them??

BTTF was thought up by someone who wondered what it would be like to go back in time and meet his GF when he was his age.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2016 17:15

Nooo BTTF was a true story, and Splash was.

OP, you might have a point if the movie was based on a true story but it isn't

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/12/2016 17:18

Ferris Bueller really had a day off.
True fact.

Imchangingmyname · 26/12/2016 17:23

I felt the same after watching Splash the other day. Also a true story. Absolutely heartbroken I was. Does anyone know if the real guy who Tom Hanks played was able to grow a tail so he could swim properly?

Spookle · 26/12/2016 17:23

This was one of my favourite films until I saw it through MN eyes Grin

Now I just can't get over the fact that after Josh is 'kidnapped', and there must have been massive police involvement etc, Billy's Mum lets him go galavanting off to the big city whenever he feels like it, he even stays out overnight FFS!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 26/12/2016 17:27

Hang on...

Splash isn't REAL?????

I've been hitting 27 octaves above middle-fucking-c for YEARS trying to break a telly!!!! And you hit me with THIS gem??

NotDavidTennant · 26/12/2016 17:27

This was based on a true story, but the real life events were much more harrowing than the film. The boy in the real events never got a chance to change back, is stuck as an adult forever, and last I heard was having to serve as foreign secretary...

And Close Encounters of the Third Kind too, totally happened, it was all hushed up at the time, but....

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2016 17:32

I think ET is one of my all time favourite 'based on a true story' films.

Buggeritimgettingup · 26/12/2016 17:34

I quite like the based on true story films BUT I much prefer complete fantasy like titanic where it just keeps you guessing until the end.

Wookiecookies · 26/12/2016 17:35

I loved the retelling of the goonies. Superb adaptation into a film of a deeply inspiring true story.

Wookiecookies · 26/12/2016 17:37

Btw... OP, YABU. Stop over analysing a cool, fun eighties movie with 2016 boring as fuck thinking.

EweAreHere · 26/12/2016 17:37

hahahaha

I washed Splash the other day, too. Was that based on a true story, too? How did I not know this??!!

KC225 · 26/12/2016 17:38

Zaza Mary Poppins IS real! In my house clothes/toys/kids really do move themselves to random places! I found toast in the dvd player the other day...that could only have been Mary Poppins!

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/12/2016 17:53

I love it for one particular quote. When her alpha-male tosser ex pouts about why does she prefer Hanks to him, she fixes her gaze on him and says "He's a grown up." And compared to all those ambitious young menchildren - he was! He was honest with Susan, never dicked her around.

And I loved her wardrobe. This coat in particular.

EZA15 · 26/12/2016 17:53

I heard for Splash Tom Wanks/Hanks tried to get a surgeon to sew his legs together to see what it was like almost having a tail? He did ask Zoltan but his wish was denied
