To think the movie BIG is horrific?

Watches it today, first time in years.

He makes his wish blah blah blah then basically runs away from home and leaves his mom to think he's been kidnapped. He ends up on a milk carton so obviously police etc involvement. No doubt a national campaign for his return.

The beat friend goes along with it despite the fact he must have some idea of what's going on at home re campaign.

He gets a job with very little OD but hey its the 1980's and then clearly has sex with one of the female characters just after he's turned 13.

She thinks he's more mature than the previous guys she's been with which speaks volumes about their opinion on men.

When he finally gets the guilts, its his school and friends whom he see's and who male him feel nostalgic, not his mom.

When the Police interview him to see where he's been for months what will he actually tell them??

Well that's a bit weird as a minor plot point limited, yes. Is that what you mean?

limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2016 18:26

Or 12 year old Josh having sex with 30 year old John?

I really like Big but that doesn't mean that 30 years on I can't think the idea of them having sex isn't such a great idea.

Manumission · 26/12/2016 18:29

Did they have sex? (And was she called John?) I really don't remember that bit.

Lweji · 26/12/2016 18:29

The boy in the real events never got a chance to change back, is stuck as an adult forever, and last I heard was having to serve as foreign secretary...

I thought it was Trump. The clue is in his little hands.

MommaGee · 26/12/2016 18:30

Yes Manu. You don't see it but it is clearly implied. Without the needs for waves crashing on a beach

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 26/12/2016 18:32

Yes they did. Iirc they had the whole light on/light off thing first?

Lweji · 26/12/2016 18:32

Last time I saw Tom Hanks he was asking Zoltar to be 30 again.

Now, this IS a TRUE story.

Manumission · 26/12/2016 18:34

Hmm. Certainly wouldn't get made now. But the revolting shit about schoolgirls in uniform persisted in the mainstream as long as the 'all teen boys would love an experience with an older woman' notion did; Both much later than we sometimes remember now.

MusterTheRohirim · 26/12/2016 18:34

Well this thread wasn't what I expected it to be Grin Nice work everyone, this has cheered me right up.

Manumission · 26/12/2016 18:35

I'm a bit worried that my brain has edited that major detail out.

Speak for yourself. Some of us are gloriously fusty young luddites thanks Grin

It is a minor plot point in a very enjoyable film Manumission but it's one I always found jarring - a child having sex with an adult and the idea that a child would and should enjoy it because he was a boy being initiated by a woman.

I really like Big and Tom Hanks and I do get the general idea that I shouldn't be PO bla, bla, bla, but would most mothers on this thread be happy that their 12 year old son had sex with a 30 year old person? Not just an attractive woman. Could be an attractive man. Would that be okay in a comedy? I guess that wouldn't be a comedy.

It's a shit idea that spoils an otherwise charming film IMO

Manumission · 26/12/2016 18:50

Oh no, when I said "minor plot point" I was referring to the weird John Candy talking in Swedish thing (from Splash was it?)

I wasn't sure if it was just "sorry what?" weird or there was some significance to saying that to the guard I was missing.

Manumission · 26/12/2016 18:51

But, yes, I'm a bit annoyed to learn that about Big too. I loved that film.

Threesoundslikealot · 26/12/2016 18:52

I do actually rather agree with the sex point. (The missing child bit is dramatic licence and falls into the convenient plot nonsense category.) When I watched it relatively recently I realised I had been thinking he didn't actually Go There, and was quite shocked that he did. The fact that it's taken for granted that a 'man' who is otherwise a fairly childish 12 year old would happily have sex is jarring.

IIRC there was a similar film released around the same time called Vice Versa, which was a father/son version of Freaky Friday. I'm pretty sure that film pulled back on the sex question.

ProseccoandPizza · 26/12/2016 18:56

Haven't RTFT however I've been traumatised by the film since I was 8. Walked in on my parents DTD on the kitchen counter whilst leaving my toddler brother and I in the living room next door. Envy not jealous face.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/12/2016 18:57

Er, when do they have sex?
I recall they slept in bunk beds!

Sorry Manumission. I misunderstood you. I adore Splash with Tom Hanks, John Candy and Daryl Hannah and it was on ITV today.

I find it very racy for 1980, especially considering that Disney is supposed to very straitlaced (not always). I really wish it wasn't bastardised all these years on because it's so funny and also shows an adult woman who not only enjoys sex, but is really going for it Xmas Grin.

That's why I find the implied sex scene from Big jarring. He's a kid. She's 30. She wouldn't have sex with him if she knew and when she sees him as a kid in his big man suit at the end it's not sweet it's 'Bleurrgh!'

That's the only thing that spoils it for me. I wonder whether there was a weird person on the scriptwriting team.

MommaGee · 26/12/2016 19:25

Oh gutted I missed Splash!

limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2016 19:30

Never seen that scene MommaGee. Creepy in the context and I can see why it was cut.

But saying you didn't realise they had sex and slept in bunk beds - doesn't he say: 'ok, but I get to go on top' - is astoundingly naive.

PabloEscobarReallyLovesHisKids · 26/12/2016 19:32

A friend of mine watched Independence Day and asked her husband if it really happened Confused Grin

limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2016 19:36

MommaGee I love everything about Splash. 'Are any of you from Penthouse magazine..? Then we ain't talking. '

phlebasconsidered · 26/12/2016 19:40

Big is weird. On the other hand, Uncle Buck is excellent and required viewing every Xmas along with Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I do think that if JohnCandy had survived he'd have been playing serious / comedy and very revered by now.
