MIL and daughter's hat.

My MIL looks after my DD one day a week (Tuesday) and her other grand daughter one day a week (Wednesday).

I bought my daughter a lovely hat last year to go with a coat she had. The hat went missing at the end of last winter and I'd searched high and low for it it to no avail. Is asked MIL if she'd seen it and she swore blind she hadn't (I was pretty sure the last time she'd worn it was to her house). A few weeks ago I lamented to MIL that it was a shame id never found the hat as it would still have fit my DD this winter and she agreed.

Yesterday afternoon I'd taken a day off work and had gone into town with my DD only to run into my MIL and her other grand daughter...wearing the bloody hat!!!

AIBU to think that you just don't do that?!

"I am a bit sad that nobody noticed my "chapeauphilia" earlier."

I noticed it. Nearly said something. Didn't. Sorry.

The Hat is a Mcguffin

Is this still going? Shock

I'd give it a rest OP, the same advice is just being regurgitated over and over.
"It's just a hat"
"No it's not, MIL lied, it's the principle"

Or have I missed this crucial info...

doomf The fact that MIL is Scottish may have a bearing seeing as you use high falutin words like dactylic pentameter

eyelevelgrill · 10/12/2016 18:04

I have got a crush on Dierdre

Is she actually Japanese?

It's not ok to steal.
All those people who are saying it's trivial - those are the people who think its ok to steal from their own families.
Thieving is one thing, but to take from your very own GD to give to your other GD, really not very nice.

You don't just minimise stealing because she gave you support with childcare, she is dishonest and there is now a distrust between the two of you.
Do not listen to some of the posts on here thinking its ok to brush off family members thieving from you, its not ok.

It was yet another Scottish wet and windy day. The Chief Inspector was sheltering from the rain whilst drawing on his Lamber & Butler. This workplace smoking ban was still annoying after all these years. Yet his brain was whirring. A new case had hit his desk. About a hat. But not just any hat. Is was A Hat. It seemed open and shut. All evidence pointed to an inside job. But something wasn't right. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he felt he was being entirely reasonable.......

There once was a fairly long thread
'Bout things that we wear on our head
I expect that the hat
Was a cheap piece of tat
But some fine contributions it's bred.

RevEm · 10/12/2016 18:12

Sorry but YABU...and rude,

Poor MIL! She's looks after your child...and other grandchild. She probs got mixed up, esp consisdering it was a year ago. If I was her I'd reconsider taking care of the child again, we all loose things and it's so easy to forget what belongs to who. There were other ways you could ave asked for the HATE back without being so disrespectful to the MIL. In the end, it was only a hat.
