to cancel a trip to America

We have a holiday booked for next year but I feel so unsettled by the election results. The appointment of his cabinet (including Jeff Sessions who was turned down previously for a job due to alleged racist remarks), make me feel fearful for my family (DC and I look Muslim but are not).

Obviously, I know this is a frivolous concern with all the other worries his election brings.

We were so looking forward to going (Feb) but now it feels wrong. DH feels equally torn.

It won't make any difference to your holiday. Just expect the country to have a similar fee to the U.K. Since brexit.

Marmighty · 18/11/2016 20:38

Most of the Americans I know are horrified by the results but they are in urban east and west coast. Where in the US are you planning to go?

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 20:41

Florida ( inc Disney!).

Oh the Brexit feel :(

Assuming you're not planning on staying in the arse end of nowhere, you'll be fine.

RusholmeRuffian · 18/11/2016 20:43

Cross posted there. Florida will be fine.

You'll be fine!

We also have a holiday in the US booked for next year. Definitely not going to cancel.

BaldricksTrousers · 18/11/2016 20:49

YABU.
This is from an American expat who goes back every year.
Nothing will change in regards to your holiday, promise.

HelenaWay · 18/11/2016 20:51

You'll be fine. For goodness sake.

MouseholeCat · 18/11/2016 20:51

If it helps, many of the urban areas in Florida had a strong Democrat lean, and many of the red areas were pretty marginal. Orange county (where Orlando is) was very strongly Democrat. Family in Florida are horrified by the results.

Friends and family in the US say that they are on the look at for racist behaviour and are fully prepared to intervene to keep people safe and supported.

You'll probably come across lots of dejected Americans wanting to make sure everyone still feels really welcome and gets a good impression of their country.

topcat2014 · 18/11/2016 20:52

I wouldn't give it a thought. Just a minor domestic admin issue for them as far as I am concerned.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/11/2016 20:55

Disney isn't America, it's a theme park, most other people will be on holiday.

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 20:56

Why for goodness sake Helenway ?

It's perfectly valid to be concerned re a rise on racism as was apparent here post brexit.

Thanks for the reassurances.

agree with topcat. in the whole scheme of things little will change.

melodycool · 18/11/2016 20:59

What do mean "look Muslim"?

melodycool · 18/11/2016 21:00

*do you

SenecaFalls · 18/11/2016 21:01

I live in Florida, OP. In spite of the fact that the state went for Trump, on the whole we are a very culturally diverse and welcoming state. Everyone I know voted for Hillary. There are lots of us.

BaldricksTrousers · 18/11/2016 21:03

Also Disney is usually extremely ethnically diverse so there shouldn't be any issues in that regard.

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:06

I am probably being overly worried, but having experience racism, I just want to protect my DC as much as I can.

CocktailQueen · 18/11/2016 21:11

How can you look Muslim?? It's a religion, not a nationality, ffS. Like me saying I look Christian. What does that look like?

Confused
GplanAddict · 18/11/2016 21:11

How can one look muslim??

It's understandable to be worried about increased racism, especially if you've recently experienced it, but Disney will be fine. Enjoy your holiday :)

rumpelstiltskin43 · 18/11/2016 21:12

There's 315 million of us, do you think we all turned into pillocks overnight?

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:13

Sorry I did not mean any offence at all, I don't really want to explain further.
