to cancel a trip to America

We have a holiday booked for next year but I feel so unsettled by the election results. The appointment of his cabinet (including Jeff Sessions who was turned down previously for a job due to alleged racist remarks), make me feel fearful for my family (DC and I look Muslim but are not).

Obviously, I know this is a frivolous concern with all the other worries his election brings.

We were so looking forward to going (Feb) but now it feels wrong. DH feels equally torn.

I think she meant she looks like she comes from a place with a big Muslim population (i.e. Pakistan, etc)

I don't think she is being unreasonable given the news about hate crimes and racist actions in the US today.

BakeOffBiscuits · 18/11/2016 21:16

My Dsis feels very similar. Her DH is Asian so her DC also look Asian. She's not happy about going to a country with a racist in charge.

However OP, I do think you'll be fine going to Disney.

Bananabread123 · 18/11/2016 21:18

How can one look muslim??

Of course you are right, Islam is a religion not a race, but Op isn't referring to you and I who know that, but to ignorant racists who may very well assume that someone is Muslim from their colouring and features.

Having said that, Disneyland is hardly redneck country, so the Op should be fine.

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:18

Yes......

Thanks, I wasn't clear, sorry.

SenecaFalls · 18/11/2016 21:19

Also please remember that Hillary won the popular vote. A majority of the people who voted in the election actually voted against Trump.

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:19

You explained it so much better then I could Bananabread thank you.

BeyondTheSea

No apologies needed. It was obvious what you meant.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 18/11/2016 21:22

Agree with all above, you will be fine. Just wanted to say that you shouldn't take American immigration to heart. They are really weird/slow/lacking in humour to everyone.

firawla · 18/11/2016 21:23

If you've already paid up I would still go, it's not worth losing out on that - just hope for the best and go and hopefully enjoy it! I do understand your feeling though. We are Muslim and wouldn't go out and immediately book a hol to USA right now as I just want to see how things will pan out with trump and any increase in racist incidents etc, but if I had already booked or for example got given a USA holiday for free I'd still just go!

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:25

Thank you AteRiri

Thank you Natural too, I have been to USA probably around 20 times, and only once had a tetchy immigration lady in NY. It must be a difficult job...

Not a ridiculous worry at all, my sis is very worried about what the election means for my black BIL and mixed race niece and nephews. They do live in a very Republican state though.

We were planning a big (10 of us) family holiday to the States next year. We've decided not to and will be going to France instead. No security concerns, it's a straightforward reaction to Trump's election - we all reached the same conclusion, we just don't want go there at the moment. It won't make the slightest difference to that revolting misogynistic slimeball, but it makes me feel better.

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:35

That does come into our decision making as well June

Hopefully you'll only have a 4 year postponement!

OP posts:
VestalVirgin · 18/11/2016 21:36

I don't think there are many security concerns now that weren't there before, and unless Trump manages to make new laws very fast, he probably won't have much damage done by next year, but I wouldn't go there out of principle.

AteRiri · 18/11/2016 21:38

Have you paid for the holiday? Can you cancel it?

JuneFromBethesda · 18/11/2016 21:40

I do hope so, Beyond! Smile

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:42

Part paid, think we'd lose around £2000.

Willing to do so though, it won't be much of a holiday if we feel uncomfortable.

The principle issue is harder, where do you draw the line? Not buying/using American products? And as another poster said, the majority of people voted for HC.

OP posts:
Ta1kinpeece · 18/11/2016 21:43

So California, the world's 6th largest economy, bigger than the UK
that did not vote for Trump
is tarred by an imaginary brush

sorry but I despise such attitudes

would you go to central London ?
or Paris or Madrid or Rome

if so why would you not go to the USA

rookiemere · 18/11/2016 21:47

If the racists of this world stop your family from going where you want to and doing what you want, then they have already won.

I understand what you are saying, but Disney and Universal welcome wallets of all nationalities and races and they'll stamp down hard on anything that would impact on their bottom line profit.

Plus as others have said Florida is tourist-ville and not a typical Trump supporter area. If anything, the locals will be going out of their way to be uber-friendly, rather like I was post the Brexit vote when I tipped my Polish beautician a large amount because I was so embarrassed to be British at that point.

For those going to France rather than the USA - how long is it until the French elections and is Marie Le Pen not rumoured to be the favourite to win?

SpidersFromMars · 18/11/2016 21:47

Don't waste 2k on silly projected fears. You'll be fine.

harderandharder2breathe · 18/11/2016 21:50

Disney will be fine, enjoy your holiday

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 21:51

rookiemere Good points that DH and I have discussed, I've just had a wobble tonight,

OP posts:
harderandharder2breathe · 18/11/2016 21:52

Bet all those saying you're being ridiculous are white so have never had to deal with causally racist attitudes

SingaSong12 · 18/11/2016 21:59

My American relatives are pretty shocked by Trump election and lots of Americans are. I doubt you'll meet racism in Florida Disney as the people living and working there are open and friendly and used to foreigners and the area relies on tourism. Actually of course you most Americans aren't racist and are friendly.) I understand your fears a bit. At immigration or security be polite and follow the rules and you should be fine and have a warm welcome/departure. (if there is a line and it says not to cross then don't until you are called forward including DC - most of the officers are nice but as with everywhere there are some officious jobsworth who will tell you off if your toe is over the line and it might sound harsh to DC even if it's not). It is possible you will be searched but I've seen all sorts of people searched so it isn't necessarily anything to do with background or how you look.)
