to cancel a trip to America

We have a holiday booked for next year but I feel so unsettled by the election results. The appointment of his cabinet (including Jeff Sessions who was turned down previously for a job due to alleged racist remarks), make me feel fearful for my family (DC and I look Muslim but are not).

Obviously, I know this is a frivolous concern with all the other worries his election brings.

We were so looking forward to going (Feb) but now it feels wrong. DH feels equally torn.

I'm just back from there a couple of weeks ago - so pre election but during the crazy campaign period. We saw a handful of obvious trump supporters - bumper stickers and t shirts - but honestly orlando area is so touristy and diverse that you will be fine.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 18/11/2016 22:01

Wow, fears of encountering racism are silly?

piglover · 18/11/2016 22:01

You'll be fine but going through immigration to get into the country is often not very fun for non-US persons.

ChuckGravestones · 18/11/2016 22:10

I'd go if I had part paid for it.

We were planning on going to NYC next October as we often do, but I said if he gets in we wouldn't go. So we aren't. On principle not for any fears.

Ta1kinpeece · 18/11/2016 22:16

So utterly precious
CBA to cope with the tin foil hatters

blueturtle6 · 18/11/2016 22:17

I personally would go ahead, please don't let bullies like trump win.
Some one may correct as not up to date on election, but don't usa have PR and there fore he may not even have got majority of individual votes?

Piratepete1 · 18/11/2016 22:18

I've been to Disney loads of times. They don't call it 'the happiest place on earth' for nothing. Trust me, you'll be fine. Flowers

dybil · 18/11/2016 22:20

I wouldn't book a holiday to the US now, because I would rather support their economy as little as possible, but you've already booked and should go ahead.

SenecaFalls · 18/11/2016 22:25

I'm American and I was opposed to Brexit. Should I boycott the UK?

GabsAlot · 18/11/2016 22:26

dont buy american products what?

can u imgaine if tourism stopped because of brexit and people stopped buying our products its ridiculous

GabsAlot · 18/11/2016 22:28

exactly seneca is bloody ridiculoous

what principle? the only people youre hurting is the public who need our business

Lunde · 18/11/2016 22:29

I was however a bit Angry about this story from today's US newspapers who came back from walking to find her car vandalised and an abusive note from someone who erroneously believed her to be muslim
www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/11/18/a-hiker-wore-a-bandanna-for-sun-protection-then-she-found-a-vile-anti-muslim-note-on-her-car/?hpid=hp_hp-more-top-stories_bandanna-320pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.51b3f00514f3

bellie710 · 18/11/2016 22:31

Really??

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 18/11/2016 22:34

Bet all those saying you're being ridiculous are white so have never had to deal with causally racist attitudes

Well in that case you would be wrong.

OP it would be silly to cancel, just like it would for people coming to the UK post Brexit.

perfumedlife · 18/11/2016 22:35

YANBU OP America has enough lily livered weaklings without your sort. Stay home and pathetic and save yourself the stress. Smile

CorkieD · 18/11/2016 22:41

I wouldn't cancel a work trip to the US but I would certainly think twice about going there on holiday. Now that Trump is President-elect, the US has lost a lot of its appeal. I think many people feel this way.

dybil · 18/11/2016 22:45

I'm American and I was opposed to Brexit. Should I boycott the UK?
Feel free to, entirely up to you.

BeyondTheSea · 18/11/2016 22:48

Thanks for the replies, some of which have helped.

TheWoodlander · 18/11/2016 22:54

There's 315 million of us, do you think we all turned into pillocks overnight?

My favourite quote tonight.

OP, I can understand your misgivings, I myself am living in a state of Shock Angry Confused Hmm at the moment following the election. But I think you'll be fine - you're a tourist travelling to Orlando. Millions do so every year- we're planning to go next year too.

scottishdiem · 18/11/2016 22:59

In America since 9/11 Hindus, Sikhs and even latino/hispanic people have been attacked for looking like a muslim.

So the question was very valid from that perspective. The washington post has a story today about how many people are now chanting "build the wall" at people who look latino/hispanic. Including school children to their classmate. So the question was very valid from that perspective as well given it was about the OP children.

Some people should just really get over the arrogance and understand other peoples fears and trying and help them rather than criticise and feel all superior.

However, all the answers about the area the OP is going should give a good level of comfort.

IAmNotAWitch · 18/11/2016 23:01

You'll be fine, especially at Disney. Nobody messes with the Mouse and their profits.

PamDooveOrangeJoof · 18/11/2016 23:03

Bloody hell the op is getting a real rough ride here!!
My friend is Sikh and she has had some real shit since brexit because people assume she's Muslim.
Every going to the polling station was awful for her.

so I can completely imagine why it would put you off during these times when hate crime massively increasing.

GabsAlot · 18/11/2016 23:47

scottish its not that part of it i was referring to

its the stop buying american products out of principle because trump is president

its pathetic

MrsA2015 · 18/11/2016 23:51

You'll be fine, "look muslim" is an actual term now because people are generally ignorant to the fact that islam is a religion and not a race.

I however am a muslim but "look white" as I'm englishGrin

SenecaFalls · 18/11/2016 23:58

Same for me. I think the OP's concerns are reasonable in the wake of racist incidents that have happened since the election, and as a longtime Florida resident, I am happy to respond.

But I think other posters who are suggesting boycotting US products because of the election are unreasonable.
