Reactions of the Mail, Express and Sun to yesterday's court decision on brexit:

The Mail's front page has a picture of the three high court judges with the headline "Enemies of the people". One judge is criticised for being "openly gay".

The Express says this is the UK's greatest crisis since the Second World War.

The Sun (proprietor: R Murdoch) takes to task the "foreign elites" who brought the case. Because their readers are less likely to approve of attacks on white pensioners (the other claimant), they focus their attack on the non-white woman claimant.

The Mail is the most problematic IMO; attacking the judiciary is another step on the road to facism.

How can we have any reasonable political debate in this environment?

Surely if the people have voted to leave we should leave!

So you think it's OK for the Mail to attack judges and the Sun to attack a woman exercising her democratic and legal rights for the "crime" of being foreign?

This isn't about brexit: it's about what can be done about press attacks on democracy. Because a functioning, independent judiciary is a fundamental part of any democracy.

Totally agree, OP. The judges did their job, applied the law and delivered a judgment on the constitutional law with regard to a unique set of circumstances.

Attacking them personally is absolutely revolting.

I've just posted this on another thread, but I'd like to say it again. Today's Daily Mail is an affront to British parliamentary democracy and it's hard-won legal checks and balances.

Tradducing the characters of the High Court and Supreme Court judges - the judiciary who, you know, they want to give back all the powers to when they've been valiantly wrestled away from the EU by an army of Katie Hopkins and Michael Goves - is bloody shameful and embarrassingly stupid.

Absolutely, it's a disgrace. The worst thing is that the editors of these papers will have completely understood the judgement - they will know that it's a ruling purely on a point of law and nothing to do with the judges' having a desire to scupper Brexit. Yet they're happy to deliberately ignore this in order to print incendiary, rabble-rousing bile that suits their agendas.

The whole issue of the legal process should have been decided before the referendum ffs.

Completely agree Misti. These papers are vile and something needs to be done about the bile they spill out on a daily basis.

The judiciary feels like our last line of defence in this madness. They are merely ensuring that massive legal change is brought about by the democratically elected representatives in a Parliament rather than Theresa May triggering article 50 alone like in a police state. I love the judiciary for their independence and respect for the rule of law. We probably will still Brexit but the Brexit will not be do extreme.

We were told during the referendum campaign that one of the really key reasons for voting out was to get our sovereignty back and allow parliament to make and review our own laws, not have them passed by a remote executive.

Why then when the judiciary require exactly this to be applied to the process of leaving do the tabloids and MPs who ought to know better start shrieking about treachery.

Parliamentary oversight of the government is vital. It is how our constitution has muddled along for 800 years and absolutely should be involved in the biggest decision the country will take in a generation.

What is The Daily Mail's agenda ? It seems to me to be simply to see how gullible the British public are , what they will assume is fact , because a newspaper has printed it as such , or at least appears to have ?

I also bet TM et al are secretly delighted about this , now she HAS to go through the parliamentary process , which inevitably slows it down , none of which is actually her fault , and as she has pointed out , anything that happens as a result of Brexit isn't her fault either , because 'the people have spoken' . Perfect conclusion for her and her colleagues !

I agree - it's not just the tabloids though. The front page banner in the Daily Telegraph is ' The Judges Versus The People' complete with frothing op-ed piece from Nigel Farage.

Im a member of a club and votes by the membership still need to be ratified by the board, so it seems the same idea here.

Brexit maths: 17m= THE PEOPLE, 16m= a tiny elite with no respect for democracy

It's the same principle as for local councils, too, Night. Councillors often vote for an 'in principle' proposal, and have officers work up an implementation plan, costings and implications, and when the report comes back to Full Council it gets amended or voted down. It's democratic and accountable (and costed).

The local press, meanwhile, characterises them all as buffoons and trough-gobblers - basic clickbait for the 'comments' writers - instead of summarising the key points of these important reports.

'The People's Outcry' should be over how horribly they're being manipulated by the tabloid and tabloid+ press. And the government.

I hate seeing it.

But the leave vote doesn't tell us when Brexit should look like. That's for Parliament to decide as our representatives and with the country's best interests at heart. Brexit is not which can nor should be done hastily.

So you agree that the tabloids are correct to attack the judiciary as enemies of the people, for people to be attacked for the crime of being gay, for a foreign-elite owned tabloid to attack "foreign elites", for people to be attacked for the crime of being foreign-born? Oh, and for our parliament to NOT be sovereign?
