To think the right wing tabloids have gone too far?

Reactions of the Mail, Express and Sun to yesterday's court decision on brexit:

The Mail's front page has a picture of the three high court judges with the headline "Enemies of the people". One judge is criticised for being "openly gay".

The Express says this is the UK's greatest crisis since the Second World War.

The Sun (proprietor: R Murdoch) takes to task the "foreign elites" who brought the case. Because their readers are less likely to approve of attacks on white pensioners (the other claimant), they focus their attack on the non-white woman claimant.

The Mail is the most problematic IMO; attacking the judiciary is another step on the road to facism.

How can we have any reasonable political debate in this environment?

Did they mention that the other two judges were 'openly heterosexual'?

No, they did not. Dog-whistle tactics.

Murdoch and Dacre are turning this country into a laughing stock. They've always been grim but the referendum seems to have legitimised the nastiest undercurrents of our national psyche. I hate what Britain is becoming.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 04/11/2016 09:22

Seems thoroughly homophobic to me. They might as well point at the judge and say 'look at him, he doesn't care about what you voted for, he's your enemy and to top it all, he's GAY too! Come on, be outraged along with us!' AngryConfused

Mistigri · 04/11/2016 09:22

It is homophobic. They wouldn't mention it if he was straight. His sexuality is irrelevant.

Exactly. It's aimed at discrediting him in the eyes of Mail readers. In the same way that mentioning that he is an ex-Olympic fencer is meant to say "he's just a sportsperson, not a properly qualified jurist".

You have to feel sorry for the Mail: it's pretty hard to turn a high court judge into a credible hate target, because judges are law-abiding, generally uncontroversial figures who are mostly old, white and conservative (with a small c), like the Mail readership. So they've had to turn founding a European law group and being OPENLY GAY!!! and AN EX-FENCER into signallers for "dodgy blokes set on destroying democracy". It's a stretch.

I didn't see that headline cock, that is homophobic. What I read imo wasn't, as they were informing the reader about every judge e.g wife, kids, partners and careers. So yes I agree that headline is a disgrace.

flippinada · 04/11/2016 09:28

Of course it's homophobic. Why mention his sexuality at all? I notice the other judges weren't described as 'openly heterosexual'.

drwitch · 04/11/2016 09:35

When I saw that mail headline on my facebook feed I honestly thought it was a daily mash mock up

Tuktuktaker · 04/11/2016 09:35

And now, it's unpatriotic to have founded a "EUROPEAN" law group, when Britain has been working with the EU in one form or another, for over 40 years. Not forgetting all the "EUROPEANS" currently living in the UK.

BusterGonad · 04/11/2016 09:38

Flip in the actual article they said his partners name which was male (Andrew), they said the others partners name and marriage status, they said the judge was famous for being the first openly gay judge a decade ago. In the version I read it did not state him as Sir Terrance Etherton and then went on a rant about his sexual orientation.

drwitch · 04/11/2016 09:39

knowing something about the subject = elite =out of touch with what the people want
getting paid to do something by the government= corrupt
Its just completely mad

Mistigri · 04/11/2016 09:41

Apparently, the Sun photoshopped the picture of Gina Miller on its front page to make her look darker Shock.

The DM Comment piece is just farcical, acknowledging that yes, it's a proper legal ruling on the constitution, but surely a proper judge would have fudged it?

autumnintheair · 04/11/2016 09:43

Today's Daily Mail is an affront to British parliamentary democracy and it's hard-won legal checks and balances

Normally I would agree with this statement 100%.

However in these circumstances with Judges openly Supporting the EU, wanting closer legal integration even setting up work within it, It seems rather skewed in terms of personal interest to me.

When you have a trial - if anyone saw the People V OJ Trial, the choosing of the Jury is paramount. People were chosen, rejected and changed throughout. To get a fair balanced Jury.

I do not know - how anyone can look at those three Judges and say they are a fair representation of interests?

myfavouritecolourispurple · 04/11/2016 09:43

The Daily Mail (and Express) seem to have forgotten or more likely wilfully ignored, the fact that one of the people who brought the case voted to leave the EU, yet still thinks parliament should have a role.

summerbreezer · 04/11/2016 09:45

I didn't see that headline cock, that is homophobic. What I read imo wasn't, as they were informing the reader about every judge e.g wife, kids, partners and careers. So yes I agree that headline is a disgrace.

Why do you think they are "informing the reader" of the marital status of the judges? Would they do that if all three had been happily married to Kathleen since 1972?

No - it is clearly written to incite homophobia without being openly homophobic. And it did its job.

autumnintheair · 04/11/2016 09:46

because judges are law-abiding, generally uncontroversial figures who are mostly old, white and conservative

Wow, all Judges are this are they ^^ ?

JellyBelli · 04/11/2016 09:46

YANBU, it's vile. And what did the press think those judges should do? Refuse to work on this case? that would have been inappropriate. If the case was the other way around it would have brought screams of left wing madness.
They need to make their minds up, Brexit was supposed to take judicial power away from Europe. Whis is what happened in this case.

BusterGonad · 04/11/2016 09:51

Summer so we shouldn't know sweet FA about them then? Really? With something so important???

Quintessing · 04/11/2016 09:52

We look like twats to the rest of the world.

On behalf of the rest of the world: Yes.
You and the US.

Mistigri · 04/11/2016 09:54

Wow, all Judges are this are they ?

Seriously, what's your problem with that? Being a convicted criminal would, I think, be a barrier to elevation to the bench let alone the high court. Most judges are uncontroversial (not all; that's why I said "generally"), and most (not all) are old and white.

Which makes judges generally rather hard for the tabloids to go after, hence the references to such heinous crimes as founding a European law group, doing paid work for the government, and being an openly gay ex-fencer. (Maybe they were hoping that their readership would misunderstand "fencer" to mean "someone who disposes of stolen goods"?)

LittleLionMansMummy · 04/11/2016 09:55

Quintessing there is still time for the US to avoid being viewed as a nation of twats. It's too late for us though.

wasonthelist · 04/11/2016 09:58

As I have said on here repeatedly, stop buying the Daily Heil, stop clicking on its vile website and it will go away.

Bitofacow · 04/11/2016 09:58

Shameful, shameful headlines.

flippinada · 04/11/2016 10:02

Yes, it's written in such a way that people (including the person who wrote it) can protest with faux-innocence "well it's just mentioning he's gay, how is that homophobic?"

birdybirdywoofwoof · 04/11/2016 10:09

Not just gay, "openly gay"! The very cheek of it!

ToujeoQueen · 04/11/2016 10:11

Yanbu, bloody disgraceful.
