To detest FAMILY day out, FAMILY meal, FAMILY fun!

Why do some people use the word "Family" to describe everyday activities?

I come across it on MN, Facebook and often irl.

I mean, the kind of families who do everything together anyway.

"Oh, we had a great family holiday". You never go on holiday separately and haven't for fifteen years.

"I made a really tasty pasta bake. #familymealtimes." As opposed to any other type of meal you ever have.

"We enjoy family day outs at the local arboretum."

Etc, etc.

Don't get me started on "Quality time".

I'm going to have some quality family time now, mumsnetting.

Lol it always makes me wonder what they do the rest of the time not eat or talk to each other

ThymeForTea · 27/08/2016 17:08

It's 'cutsey'. I dont know when it started but I hate it too.

Oysterbabe · 27/08/2016 17:11

I guess it just means everyone in the family was there. I struggle to get worked up about terminology other people choose to use.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2016 17:11

Ah, I hate "School Run"

Its taking your children to school.

I go to work, I don't do a Work Run
I go shopping, I don't do a Supermarket Run

I suppose Family Day Out for us was taking the DC out and it was just about them&us , no tedious shopping or buying clothes sneaked in. Grin

WipsGlitter · 27/08/2016 17:14

Even worse is #makingmemories. Boke.

Helmetbymidnight · 27/08/2016 17:15

The family doth protest too much.

Or something like that.

It is phrased to make it look like you did something more fun and interesting than the thing you actually did.

Effendi · 27/08/2016 17:15

'As a family' makes me cross. No idea why.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 27/08/2016 17:16

I loathe 'my/our little family'.

Nishky · 27/08/2016 17:18

Making memories gets on my wick too- - I saw a FB post of a photo of so someone's kids on a beach with that as the caption-you're on fucking holiday like everybody else

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 17:19

Just gone on Facebook and CRINGE:

"Raining here, but I love family movie days."

OP posts:
Nishky · 27/08/2016 17:19

And 'lunch at x place' #familytime #feeling blessed - give me strength

somekindofmother · 27/08/2016 17:19

I'm totally gonna #workrun and #supermarketrun from now on....

Nishky · 27/08/2016 17:20

It's an epidemic

Womenareliketeabags · 27/08/2016 17:20

I hate hate hate it when you hear men saying 'sorry can't do x, I'm babysitting!'. NO NO NO your fucking responsible for YOUR children whilst your DW/DP works/goes out/whatever it maybe.

Makes me want to stab them in the eyes.

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 17:21

I agree!

Feeling blessed
Family time
Our little family
As a family

Aaagh!

I actually like family days out but I never call it that. We don't get chance to do it very often so when we do we enjoy it

hippoherostandinghere · 27/08/2016 17:22

#makingmemories is the absolute worst. Makes me want to Puke.

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 17:22

I'm just off to do the taking the recycling out run. #feelingblessed

"Oh, we had a great family holiday". You never go on holiday separately and haven't for fifteen years.

We do. People go on school residentials, Scout camps, ski holidays, visits to other friends or relations, camping with mates, girls / lads weekend away etc.,etc.
Only one of our holidays is the 'family holiday' but there are many nights where some of the family are away without all of us being on that break.

ChicRock · 27/08/2016 17:25

I have someone on Facebook who has just checked in to the airport for "holibobs with the famalam". I'd take hashtag 'family time' over that any day. I'm actually cringing.

JudyCoolibar · 27/08/2016 17:25

It always makes me laugh that, when the Daily Fail wants to have a moan about something, it's always in terms of how it'll hurt families - e.g. "Falling pound hits family holidays". Will single people be magically exempt from currency fluctuations?

Lorelei76 · 27/08/2016 17:26

Women "I hate hate hate it when you hear men saying 'sorry can't do x, I'm babysitting!'"

I always say "oh that's kind of you, friend's kids is it?"

then they sheepishly explain what they mean and I get to raise an eyebrow in utter disdain Grin

Lorelei76 · 27/08/2016 17:27

Actually I thought this post was going to be different because I do hate "family" gatherings but luckily I have a tiny family and I protest vociferously at any attempts at enforced socialising and togetherness anyway.
