To detest FAMILY day out, FAMILY meal, FAMILY fun!

Why do some people use the word "Family" to describe everyday activities?

I come across it on MN, Facebook and often irl.

I mean, the kind of families who do everything together anyway.

"Oh, we had a great family holiday". You never go on holiday separately and haven't for fifteen years.

"I made a really tasty pasta bake. #familymealtimes." As opposed to any other type of meal you ever have.

"We enjoy family day outs at the local arboretum."

Etc, etc.

Don't get me started on "Quality time".

I'm going to have some quality family time now, mumsnetting.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 30/08/2016 00:18

The friend I mentioned always posts daft shit:

-mommy tears
-breaks my mommy heart
-#perfectfamily

If I didn't love her so much, I'd unfriend her. But I can't bring myself to do it.

lookingforhope · 30/08/2016 08:42

Just seen a new one #GodsCountry plastered under every manky snapshot of an average sunset seen from their bedroom windows (if even vaguely rural). Does God know about this? And does he subcontract the less photogenic towns to elected mayors and councils?

Alconleigh · 30/08/2016 08:55

This thread is making me genuinely happy. Especially when we were called #haters.
#lovethevipers

lookingforhope · 30/08/2016 09:35

Ah, Alconleigh now we can own #hatersgonnahate and steal my own personal nadir #sorrynotsorry from the terminally smug (it's never clear who exactly demanded apologies from these aggressively unrepentant types for posting holiday photos and snaps of restaurant food Grin )

ShteakandShpuds · 30/08/2016 09:46

Lighten up you miserable gits.
Facebook is meant to be OTT cringeworthy, surely that's the point of it?
Grin
I'm an old gimmer and I've never used a hashtag in a FB post, but now I see I'm required to provide joy to my readers so off to think up some new #fabbydoozy made up words.

VenusRising · 30/08/2016 09:46

I thought "family meals" meant there was cheap deep fried shit on the menu, ya know, for da kidz.

#bitharsh tossing people off #yourthreadOP

Suggest #angermanagement and #breathe

However, I agree this #hashtagoritdidnthappen is getting tedious.
I suppose it's indicative of how isolated and dislocated from a real community people feel they are, that they have to #putitoutthere but for whom? That's the interesting thing isn't it? Whom are these #amazingposts for, and do they expect a medal?

Is FB bigger than the Beatles Jesus? Wink #irony

Dozer · 30/08/2016 10:22

Ooh, another one, public thank yous/gushing about time with guests or hosts or people from a night ot: "great evening/weekend/holiday with great company", tagging in the company.

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 30/08/2016 10:54

Oh I am so pleased that "making memories" gives others the rage too. I've only recently noticed it being used and it gives me a strong urge to spend the rest of my life vomiting. Surely people don't really arrange a great holiday or fun day out or whatever with the sole intention of looking back at it misty eyed in 20 years' time (whilst tutting at their now grown up kids who can't remember said occasion). [sceptical]

lookingforhope · 30/08/2016 12:52

Blackbird they will be forced to remember it by being tagged annually when it comes up on Facebook memories until they are 30. So maybe #makingmemories is being used in the literal sense! They could even get one of those compilation books that keep being advertised in my timeline with the tagline 'Your Life Deserves a Book' (should have a qualifying strapline 'which is lovely for you and please genuinely enjoy it, but keep it on a shelf and don't bore the arse off everyone else with it')

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 30/08/2016 13:14

Looking yes exactly that!!! Grin

ParadiseCity · 30/08/2016 13:20

Some of my loveliest friends do cringey cheesy hashtags.

I think they are like freckles, some people just have some sort of compulsion to hashtag stuff, others don't, and some people you don't really notice them until a bit of sunshine and then they are out in full force.

caroline161 · 30/08/2016 15:45

Isn't it always the "huns" that are guilty of this? We are fortunate enough to live near the south coast and my Facebook is full of pictures of the beach and #lovewherewelive um....no you don't, this isn't the view from your bedroom, you live on a shitty housing estate 5 miles away and had to leave at 8am this morning so that you could park your car.

WaitrosePigeon · 30/08/2016 15:48

I texted DH and said;

'Fancy a family walk when you get home?'

Then I thought of this thread Blush

Stanleysmum2014 · 30/08/2016 15:56

Love this thread!!! I thought I was just a total bitch for hating the #makingmemories #familytime stuff (well, I probably still am!) I wonder how often these days are full of tantrums, stressed out parents and kids being little shites! How did we make memories before Facebook I wonder?!!!

VioletBam · 30/08/2016 15:56

OP I am with you. I also hate people who post mundane shite they've done...which WE ALL have to do as ADULTS and say

"Patting myself on the back for completing my tax return! Now I deserve a nice glass of wine!"

You HAD to do the fucking return and you're a grown up. Just have the wine either way!

FFS

Stanleysmum2014 · 30/08/2016 15:57

And yes it's definitely always the 'big hugs huns' that do this!!

caroline161 · 30/08/2016 16:28

Or the "aw huns"

ParadiseCity · 30/08/2016 16:36

YY #taxreturnheros

Like the people getting back from #familyadventures that then post

7am, six loads washed dried ironed and put away, floors mopped, homework completed, #readytostarttheday

#ohdofuckoffdear

DooRight · 30/08/2016 16:41

Putting "My" in front of any noun... - I like "my" Football, I like "my Soaps", I like "my" Music.....blaaaagh

WaitrosePigeon · 30/08/2016 16:50

Doo I hate that too!!!

SweetGrapes · 30/08/2016 16:50

"Please excuse the mess, the children are making memories"
I love this one! In my mind it covers all kinds of crappy housework...

DooRight · 30/08/2016 16:55

..and don't get DooRight started about talking in the 3rd person - he'd be livid...!

futurelotterywinner · 30/08/2016 17:02

As annoying as hashtags are, my biggest cringe inducing Facebook posts are the mysterious, attention seeking posts such as just 'fuming' 'has had enough' and, not forgetting '😢'
Usually followed by the standard response of 'what's up Hun?' Then usually followed by 'I'll PM you now'

My standard response is to not respond and question my friend choices!!!!

MumiTravels · 30/08/2016 19:37

futurelotterywinner - 'Unfollow'. So they are there but just lurking in the background not cluttering up your nice hashtag free news feed.

i had to do that to my cousin's wife as she was driving me potty bitching about how much of a shit husband he is

BlueFolly · 31/08/2016 02:17

It's the Peter Andrification of life.
