To detest FAMILY day out, FAMILY meal, FAMILY fun!

Why do some people use the word "Family" to describe everyday activities?

I come across it on MN, Facebook and often irl.

I mean, the kind of families who do everything together anyway.

"Oh, we had a great family holiday". You never go on holiday separately and haven't for fifteen years.

"I made a really tasty pasta bake. #familymealtimes." As opposed to any other type of meal you ever have.

"We enjoy family day outs at the local arboretum."

Etc, etc.

Don't get me started on "Quality time".

I'm going to have some quality family time now, mumsnetting.

cherry it's overkill!

Of course they never post when driving to the beach and dad is fed up with kids kicking back of car seat for the millionth time! #nothappyfamilyfordrivingdad!

lulu I wallow in a pit of unhappiness me...! Halo

SuperFlyHigh · 27/08/2016 18:17

Helmet love that! Grin

TuftyFinchy · 27/08/2016 18:17

lulu I agree. I know someone who constantly posts 'adorable' photos of her 'family' days out with #feelingblessed #kidsbeingkids #lovemyfamiky but away from the unreal world of social media she's the agouti eat/crossest person I've ever seen. She spends her whole time making her kids pose for photos rather than actually engaging/purposefully ignoring her kids. It's like some kind of alternative reality.

Oh I bloody love this thread. How brilliant would it be if for one day only (some) people who like to make their world look too good to be true, actually put the truth. I always used to say no one is going to put on their status that they have holes in their socks and bayliffs at the door. Anyway I'm off to spend time with my ickle famalam. Grin

ArcheryAnnie · 27/08/2016 18:31

The use of "family" thing that really pisses me off is "family ticket". I'm in a family - it's just me as a single parent and my DS - but a discounted "family" ticket never ever applies to us, and I always have to pay one full-price adult ticket and one full-price child ticket, whatever the attraction. The practical result is that bigger families, including plenty of two-parent families, are subsidised by me and people like me, even though we are (obviously, because single-income and have no other adult to share expenses with) likely to be poorer.

Me and DS are a family. It feels so fucking disrespectful that very few places acknowledge this.

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 18:33

Interesting though that when they post about Family days, it doesn't make it seem as though their lives are good. It seems as though their lives must be poorer quality than other people's.

"We had a lovely FAMILY day out". Hmmm, so you're concerned your family's fragmenting, I presume!

lulu I have friends who do NOTHING with their children, their lives revolve around TV and iPads....

They have amazingly managed to take them out twice this summer holidays = 7000 photos of every single movement the kids made. Loads of 'I love family time' bollocks. I think they were looking for a medal

cherryplumbanana · 27/08/2016 18:36

WTF do people mean when they post what they think is a great photo and put #nofilter.

well, just that? No filter to boost the colours and appearance? Confused

jellycat1 · 27/08/2016 18:39

Oh you are so NBU! Always irritated me but thought it was just me!

cherryplumbanana · 27/08/2016 18:39

If people put anything negative, they are then accused of being attention seeker #dramalama and god knows what. Not sure what you expect to see other people to post?

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 18:41

Yep, I have a couple of friends like that too. One posted about her DS doing colouring-in, and it was all #screenfreechild #traditionalchildhood #proudmummy #specialfamilytimes.

He's always on his tablet.

Really?? Boak.

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 18:43

This isn't just about Facebook. I see I all over MN and friends say it in regular conversation. "Having family takeaway tonight", etc.

PirateFairy45 · 27/08/2016 18:44

You sound a little bitter...

Philoslothy · 27/08/2016 18:44

I thought this thread was moaning about spending time with your extended family. Mine is a nightmare so I was going to offload. I find it hard to get annoyed at my friends enjoying time with their families.

Buddahbelly · 27/08/2016 18:44

Its the ones who you know have been arguing all day and still write making memories on facebook that piss me right off.

My cousin is obsessed with making memories with her 2 children...got on the bus #makingmemories, had an ice cream at the park #makingmemories, Had a trip to see another human being #makingmemories.

And don't get me started on the feeling blessed, its usually that the brat from hell has fallen asleep somewhere.

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 18:45

I have nothing to be bitter about. We always eat together, holiday together etc. Describing it as "Family" would be a nonsense, as it is for these people too.

OP posts:
Philoslothy · 27/08/2016 18:47

I do look at my children and feel blessed. If you have teenagers - family time does become a thing because the buggers spend their lives trying to get out of it. Maybe that is just mine.

lulucappuccino · 27/08/2016 18:48

Kids in paddling pool with ice lollies. Great. That's lovely.

We don't need #familyfun #gardenliving #lovemychildrentothemoonandback.

It's implied in the picture!

"holibobs with the famalam"

That is genius. Are you sure they weren't being sarcastic? :o

I do however do a supermarket run (though not in a special dress).
