I've started reading it to my 4 year old recently and have come to realise it's just a load of waffling and rambling thoughts of an obviously high/drunk person.

I wonder if something like it, written the way it is, would get published today...I don't think it's anything special.

No wonder the film was changed so much.

(I did really enjoy LOTR though and have read it 3 times)

Infact every adaptation bypasses the waffling.

I've got the original editions of Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. It is a jumble I'll agree but it is also my favourite all time story, I refuse to even let DC look at them

YABU - and so what if you like Lord of the Rings - surely that is totally unrelated??

I don't like Alice in Wonderland, due the alleged horrible way he came to write the story. May not be true, but it certainly has a creepy 'Peter pan' vibe.

Also, it was written back when written and spoken language was completely different to modern day written and spoken English, so no it probably wouldn't have been published as is in this day and age, however it wasn't published in this day and age

I wrote down I like LOTR because I know a lot of people think it's shit ...so it was like a comparison

Edmund it was written for his daughter iirc, not sure how that's weird? I'm off to do research on the matter, I've never heard about any horrible reason for writing the story

YANBU. It makes no sense and is a load of nonsense. Really don't like it. I wouldn't even attempt to watch the new one with creepy looking Johnny Depp in it, he looks way too sinister.

One of the best books in the English language IMHO.

I love Alice in Wonderland! Opened up whole new worlds of imagination when I was a child. I was a lot older when I read it though.

Hated the Johnny Depp film though

letmehave I don't agree with that because there's loads of Charles Dickens books written around the same time and they're written brilliantly without the waffling. Not to mention all the Sherlock Holmes books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lewis Carol's AinW is shit compared to all other books written in the 1800's

I watched the new movie with my dd and ds and they enjoyed it; because it was so far removed from the real story!

Doesn't mean it's not a good story Homer but everyone has different opinions. My opinion was that I thoroughly enjoyed the stories.

I loved it as a child and still do.Esp looking glass. I used to sit in front of our mirror and wish I could go through. I was scared of the jabberwocky picture
I liked the sheep in the shop and the train as well.

That's a shame that you've been disappointed; I thought it was common knowledge there were undercurrents to his friendship with the real Alice.

LOTR is shit, love the story, cant read the books.. the rambling is ridiculous, i can never get passed the Tom Bombadil stuff, its like trying to swim through treacle getting through those books.

And thats coming from someone who will happily sit and read the whole GoT series in 8 days!

I work every day reading Elizabethan, 18th century and 19th century texts: I still find Carroll's text both rambling and rather disturbing.

But I do think it is a boon to British culture visually and aurally: it has splendid images in it and has stimulated interest in poetry and poetical language ever since it was written. So I think it is a very good job it was written- as long as I don't have to read it too often.
