AIBU in the 1970s

I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

Such as:

My MIL came over to visit our new baby. She lives abroad and was horrified when I left the baby in a pram outside a shop, while I went in to buy some things. She started lecturing me on how the baby could be snatched. WIBU to tell her she was paranoid? I know she is being, but my DP thinks I have been very rude.

AIBU to think that DH and I should be free to continue smoking heavily in the front of the car and not have to put up with the four kids in the back whining about not having windows open? I don't want my hair messed up and they are free to climb about unrestrained in the back, so should be able to find something else to focus on FFS.

HappenstanceMarmite · 12/05/2016 17:34

^that is how my siblings and I were transported around. Just like most other kids I knew

icanteven · 12/05/2016 17:53

AIBU to want lovely modern cabbage patterned wallpaper for our lounge? I've been able to find a gorgeous cabbage shaped ashtray on a stand to go with it and cabbage patterned lace curtains, but DH wants to keep the red and gold flocked wallpaper. However, the children have smeared Liga on it and I can't get it off, so I want new wallpaper.

Grumpyoldblonde · 12/05/2016 17:53

Aibu to think that Black Tower wine is perfectly acceptable for a drinks and nibbles evening? and it is fine to wear a maxi dress that matches my curtains?

Cocolepew · 12/05/2016 17:56

Aibu to smack my DCs for fighting who gets to sit in the boot of our estate car? DH thinks I should have left them to sort it out without me whacking them around the earhole.

icanteven · 12/05/2016 17:56

Some people will prefer Blue Nun, but so long as you have pineapple and cheese on little sticks you're good to go. Does the maxi dress have nice nylon ruffles?

x2boys · 12/05/2016 18:02

Am I AIBU ro send my small.child to the shop with a note when I run out of john players black ?

Grumpyoldblonde · 12/05/2016 18:03

icanteven I thought vol au vents, but it is the neighbours coming round and I don't want them to think I am showing off. Isn't Blue Nun a bit 'posh' for a casual nibbles evening? I have to stick with tab as I'm slimming and can't have more than 800 calories a day.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 12/05/2016 18:06

My DH thinks that cooking a vesta curry for our dinner party tonight is going overboard. I think it is perfect - it is his boss after all.

x2boys · 12/05/2016 18:07

What would you.putting in your vol au vonts Grumpy would if involve codenamed mushroom soup ?

x2boys · 12/05/2016 18:07

Aibu to dress my children in cloth kit woolen dresses for parties until they are 11 years old?

sassytheFIRST · 12/05/2016 18:08

It's perfectly OK to leave my children in the car while we go for a swift half in the pub isn't it? I'll pop out with a coke and pack of crisps for them. DH says it's a bit mean but I'm more worried about them burning their legs on the car upholstery than them being lonely.

bearleftmonkeyright · 12/05/2016 18:12

Sassy that would have been mine Grin. Salt n shake crisps and glass bottles of coke with paper straws.

bearleftmonkeyright · 12/05/2016 18:15

Aibu to send the DC down the boozer to tell DH his Sunday roast is ready?

marmaladegranny · 12/05/2016 18:15

AIBU to query whether DH should drive us home from the pub? He only had a couple or so glasses of wine at lunchtime and 3 G&Ts this evening. The coppers in the pub (over the road from cop shop) told us which route to take to avoid any over enthusiastic younger policemen!

Ginslinger · 12/05/2016 18:17

DD is 13 and told me all her friends are wearing American Tan tights and she's the only one in socks Hmm am i being unreasonable in not buying her tights?

cleaty · 12/05/2016 18:17

x2boys - YABU, you need to send them with money as well.

*x2boys^well I tried prawns on my birthday at the Berni Inn, I liked them but don't want anyone getting a queer tummy, better have a rethink and stick with bridge rolls and cheese and pineapple sticks. I can't eat anyway with my slimming plan, I am smoking too many Bel Air at the moment to take away my hunger pangs.

scarednoob · 12/05/2016 18:19

AIBU to think that my DS (32) should have had a girlfriend by now? He's never been interested in girls, he just wants to spend all his time with his friend Gary.

bearleftmonkeyright · 12/05/2016 18:20

Aibu to apply for us all to go on Ask the Family? I have a massive crush on Robert Robinson.

sassytheFIRST · 12/05/2016 18:20

Aibu to spend some of my family allowance on string? I've seen a lovely macrame pot holder pattern in Good Housekeeping - we'll be a bit short for the week but the kids can eat beans on toast instead of findus crispy pancakes for a few days.

x2boys · 12/05/2016 18:20

AIBU to think these new continental quilts will never catch on and stick with blankets ?
