AIBU in the 1970s

I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

AIBU to expect neighbour not to be arsy about my Mum calling her house to tell me my dad had died.

cleaty · 12/05/2016 19:32

x2boys - What is a computer?
And it is sensible to tie a key round your DCs neck with a bit of string. My mum did this to me, and it meant that I never lost it. Unlike my friend who lost her key, and was locked out.

Those who want to complain to the school are VVVU. Teachers know best.

AIBU to push my kids out of the door at 8.30am (with a bread and dripping sandwich wrapped in an old bread bag) and tell them not to come back until bed time??

After all, it is the school holidays and they are nearly 7!!

Janey50 · 12/05/2016 19:34

Grin at codenamed mushroom soup!

Abecedario · 12/05/2016 19:35

AIBU to serve my family lasagne. On the one hand it's mince based like all meLs should be, but then it's foreign and there's no gravy.

AIBU to only boil the veg for dinner for 20 minutes? I'm a bit pushed for time and can't manage the full half hour plus. Will the veg still be edible?

TroysMammy · 12/05/2016 19:35

We are going on holiday with another family and driving there in a volvo estate. Would it be ok for the children (5) to sit in the boot part of the car on cushions whilst the adults (4) sit on the seats?

oliviaclottedcream · 12/05/2016 19:35

AIBU to think Ted Heath's a poof?

Karoleann · 12/05/2016 19:36

AIBU not to eat liver twice a week as suggested by the doctor.
It tastes disgusting and I'm having to cook 2 meals in an evening as DH and kids won't eat it.
I wish DH would also stop drinking my guinness, having been told to drink a pint a day its getting really irritating going to the cupboard to find that its all gone...

Janeymoo50 · 12/05/2016 19:37

I'm thinking of buying frozen oven chips that I saw in Bejam...haven't used them before but I think I might get rid of my chip pan (it's always just kept on the cooker anyway, and it will save me having to buy Lard every minth).

AIBU about giving my kids frozen chips with their crispy pancakes?

dotdotdotmustdash · 12/05/2016 19:37

AIBU to love my Granny's white bread, butter and sugar sandwiches? They really do fill a hole!

AIBU to think the neighbour is a dirty slattern as she hasn't changed or washed her curtains all year? I know she has a very ill DH to look after and her lad is a bit simple, but that is no excuse to let the house get filthy?

Loving this, AIBU to put my feet in mothers pride bread bags to get my feet in my riding boots, then work all day at the stables for nothing, not even a ride, surviving on a bag of chips with scraps and salt and vinegar all day from 8 until 6?

Why is it obvious I am a northerner?

dillydotty · 12/05/2016 19:43

AIBU to want to try and breast feed my baby? DM says that it's only for poor people and that formula is much better for him

I would give the baby bottles. That way you can put some rusks in it at night to fill him up before bed. My babies slept well from a couple of weeks old Wink

When consenting homosexual sex was a criminal offence.
Actually legalised in1967 as long as both parties were over 21 but were still subjected to harassment.

glamorousgrandmother · 12/05/2016 19:47

I was 15 in 1970 but a lot of this rings true for the 60s and 70s.

dillydotty · 12/05/2016 19:47

Handsoffmysweets you beat me to it.

iklboo · 12/05/2016 19:50

What should I wear to the neighbour's wife swapping party this weekend? Does DH need to wear a tie. And how do we get our car keys back? I'm a bit worried as pampas grass brings on me hay fever something rotten.

We're taking:

Party Seven keg
Mateus Rose & Blue Nun wine
Cheese & pineapple on sticks

Is thus enough or should I take some Babycham as well so they think we're glam?

TotalConfucius · 12/05/2016 19:50

AIBU to think that it's absolutely fine to squeeze 7 children into my 2 door Morris Marina on the school run? And charge the mothers for the privilege?
One of my customers (well, it's Lynda from number 9 really) says it looks like a bit of a squash and it's creasing her Terry's blazer, but I think it will be fine.

(MIL in 1973, true story)

BalloonSlayer · 12/05/2016 19:51

x2boys of course you ABU Hmm

You are not doing enough to encourage your DC's independence. They are old enough to remember what brand of cigarettes you smoke and should be perfectly capable of running to the shop and buying them for you without a note. Stop mollycoddling them for heaven's sake! Or how will they cope later in life when they want to buy their own fags?

PerspicaciaTick · 12/05/2016 19:52

My DCs have grown out of their T-bar buckled leather shoes, wibu to cut the toes out of the shoes with razor and turn them into sandals for the summer?

Aibu to take the whole netball team (plus reserve) to our away game in my Ford Fiesta? The goal attack is quite tall so she can sit in the front with me - it'll be a bit squashed for the other 7 in the back but they'll enjoy the fun and none of the parents mind.

PerspicaciaTick · 12/05/2016 19:56

The school want to teach my DD to read using a made up alphabet with weird letters. I think it is called ITA and is a phonetic alphabet. They say they'll teach her the ordinary alphabet once she is used to reading ITA. Do you think this is a good idea?
