AIBU in the 1970s

I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

Redecorating - I want orange and blue in the living room to match our swirly carpet, but DH thinks brown is more sensible....

Rubenesque · 12/05/2016 20:00

I went to the doctor's today to get a coil fitted and he gave me a form for my husband to sign his consent before the Dr would do it. AIBU to forge my DH's signature?

PerspicaciaTick · 12/05/2016 20:00

When I look at photos of my primary school aged children and their friends, they all have collar length hair and wear jeans and T-shirts. You can't tell which are girls and which are boys. Wouldn't it be great if we could get all the girls to have long hair and wear pink all the time so we can tell them apart?

PerspicaciaTick · 12/05/2016 20:02

Do it Ruben

MyLocal · 12/05/2016 20:05

AIBU to think it's ok to have spam fritters and semolina for school lunch, I am sure Jamie Oliver wouldn't have any objections.

Purplepixiedust · 12/05/2016 20:07

I used to love spam fritters and beans for school dinners 😁

whitehandledkitchenknife · 12/05/2016 20:11

AIBU to be totally in love with Brentford Nylons? The sheets are so easy to wash and no ironing! I quite like the sparky effect too when I get into bed in my baby doll negligee.

Disabrie22 · 12/05/2016 20:15

I love the mention of Heinz sandwhich spread - that was lunch at everybody's house!! Plus that funny orange lemonade in glass bottles that came from the van.

Foxyspook · 12/05/2016 20:15

I'd forgotten about Sunny Smiles.

Trumpton · 12/05/2016 20:16

PerspicaciaTick. I remember my shoes being cut into sandals.

My DS is bringing his GF round for Sunday dinner. She is a vegetarian. AIBU to serve her the normal vegetables and potatoes for Sunday dinner and just leave out the meat?

I don't think your example would be an AIBU..it's too normal a practice to think there would be a problem.
Maybe
AIBU to store 50 bags of sugar in the downstairs toilet??!
AIBU to get our children to mix the adults party drinks ??!
AIBU to get a chest freezer especially for the half pig I have ordered?
AIBU to get the kids to buy my cigarettes from the newsagents??!
AIBU to think school are bonkers for banning clackers??!
AIBU to think British Bulldog is quite fun??!

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 12/05/2016 20:20

Jamie who, dear MyLocal - does he work with Fanny Craddock?

Himalayanrock · 12/05/2016 20:22

' vegetarian ' said in special hushed voice, similar to the voice used for ' divorce'.

She's very pale, think she might be a , you know, one of those ' vegetarians'

dillydotty · 12/05/2016 20:24

My husband and I are both teachers. DD keeps nagging about having a friend over for tea. DD and DS walk home together, they only cross two roads and are only on their own for a couple of hours at the most each night.

The girls are 4 but DS is top infants and will keep an eye on them. AIBU to give in?

poodlefromcatan · 12/05/2016 20:28

AIBU to take down the living room brown velvet curtains and make my DD a lovely long bridesmaid's dress edged in lace with a matching cape and then double it up for party dresses for the next 7 years?

drspouse · 12/05/2016 20:28

AIBU to just pretend we're reusing the bath water to water the garden every day? DH is very Good Life and we grow almost all our veggies but the DC don't have a bath often enough and the spinach is wilting. How will we survive without gritty spinach soup?

Also DD1 has just started her first job at the bank. She's complaining the manager keeps wanting her to bend over and pick things up. AIBU to tell her to woman up and grit her teeth to get on in life?

redshoeblueshoe · 12/05/2016 20:29

Right I know I am no being U, but can someone tell me how much brandy to put in DD's bottle as she is teething.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 12/05/2016 20:30

My 15yr old sister is off school today and didn't get a fresh loaf for me and mother for lunch when we finished our morning shift at the mill.

WIBU to punch her in the face and over the back of the sofa?

(true story. my mum has not regretted that punch once in the last 40 years)

drspouse · 12/05/2016 20:30

Oh I also forgot, AIBU to dock DD2's pocket money for doing her homework by candlelight when the power cuts were on, and burning the lampshade?

GarlicShake · 12/05/2016 20:31

YANBU, dilly, it's great that your children are learning to organise their own social lives at this age. Your biggest problem might be the mess if they knock things off the counter top while preparing tea.

moonandforward · 12/05/2016 20:31

AIBU to remove all the sheets & blankets on the bed and replace them with 'Continental Quilts'.

drspouse · 12/05/2016 20:31

redshoeblueshoe Better to rub it on his gums. That's what we did with DS and the schnapps DH won in a bet.
