Baked potato debate

NeedACLeverNN · 23/04/2016 21:48

Me and dh are having a debate over a baked potato....how mundane I know.

I think a baked potato should be cooked in the oven. Takes longer I know but it's how you get that lovely crispy skin

He cooks them by whacking them in the microwave first then finishing them off under the grill. It's quicker and there not much difference in taste but that's not the point.

So wise ones....who is right?

please say me or I will never live this down. He is sat here with a smug look on his face

If you had only said microwave you'd have won me over, but microwave and then grill?! What kind of genius is that? Sorry, he wins (and thanks for the tip)

dementedpixie · 23/04/2016 21:52

It's microwave and then oven for a shorter amount of time than just using the oven.

ghostyslovesheep · 23/04/2016 21:52

I get frozen ones - they are nice and in between the 2

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 23/04/2016 21:52

You are. Though if I'm in a hurry I microwave them and finish them off in the oven - not the grill. They aren't as good though.

PS baked potatoes are the food of the Gods.

PPS you're the only other person I know who says "baked" potatoes. Everyone else says "jacket" potatoes.

Pinkheart5915 · 23/04/2016 21:52

Has to be cooked in the oven in this house

CaveMum · 23/04/2016 21:53

Best thing is to pop them in the slow cooker in the morning (pierce the skins, wrap in foil and put a bit of water in the bottom of the cooker). Then in the evening put them in a very hot oven for 15/20 mins to crisp up the skin.

Cakescakescakes · 23/04/2016 21:53

Oven! The best way.

NeedACLeverNN · 23/04/2016 21:54

Glad you have a nice new tip blue but shame on you!! Grin

And I chop and change. Sometimes I say baked sometimes I say jacket.

Microwave on the 'potato' setting. Then finish off in the oven. Quick way to do it but they are fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Yummy!

starry0ne · 23/04/2016 21:54

I do microwave finish in the oven.. I have also done in slow cooker..Cooker are the nicest however microwave and oven if don't want to spend an hour smelling potato cooking

Diamogs · 23/04/2016 21:54

Neither of you, microwave to cooked then 15 minutes in a really hot oven. Inside nice and fluffy, outside lovely and crispy and takes much less time.

BreconBeBuggered · 23/04/2016 21:54

My own method is a sort of compromise: I heat them up in the microwave to save a bit of time, but the oven does the actual cooking. If you cook them right through in the microwave the texture is wrong.

Dontneedausername · 23/04/2016 21:54

Microwave, the into hot oven to crisp up the skin :)

Doobydoo · 23/04/2016 21:54

If microwave owner. Use that then oven. If not oven. Love Baked spuds

BikeRunSki · 23/04/2016 21:55

Aga, bottom oven for several hours is best by miles.
Then oven cooked
The oven/microwave combo
Then frozen ones
All these are fine; I often take the frozen ones for work.

Ordinary spuds, just microwaved are revolting and unacceptable.

chickenowner · 23/04/2016 21:55

Microwave and then oven. :-)

Coconut0il · 23/04/2016 21:55

We always microwave then use the oven to crisp up.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 23/04/2016 21:55

1st choice - wrapped in foil in a real fire
2nd choice - oven
3rd choice - microwave followed by oven
4th choice - microwave only (DD prefers soft skin so I do them like this for her).

MillieMoodle · 23/04/2016 21:55

I do microwave then oven to crisp up as I don't seem to be organised enough to put them in the oven for long enough to cook properly. But they do taste better in just the oven!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 23/04/2016 21:56

Oven or camp fire in foil.

It seems so simple, you have to wonder how spud-u-like manage to charge so much for getting it so spectacularly wrong.

Defnotsupergirl · 23/04/2016 21:56

I say baked potato, as did my Gran, as does my mum...... Oven is best-wrapped in tinfoil with a skewer through

FeelingSmurfy · 23/04/2016 21:56

I don't like microwave potatoes, they taste different, oven all the way for me

5minutestobed · 23/04/2016 21:59

Oven definitely, microwave is just not the same.

threestars · 23/04/2016 22:03

Here, it's microwaved, taken out and brushed with olive oil & salt, then blasted in the oven to crisp up the skins.

TheCrumpettyTree · 23/04/2016 22:03

I have an oven microwave so get crispy potatoes in about half hour. Best of both worlds!
