Baked potato debate

NeedACLeverNN · 23/04/2016 21:48

Me and dh are having a debate over a baked potato....how mundane I know.

I think a baked potato should be cooked in the oven. Takes longer I know but it's how you get that lovely crispy skin

He cooks them by whacking them in the microwave first then finishing them off under the grill. It's quicker and there not much difference in taste but that's not the point.

So wise ones....who is right?

please say me or I will never live this down. He is sat here with a smug look on his face

(baked sweet potato is even better!)

PrimalLass · 23/04/2016 22:04

Microwave then 25 mins in the oven.

Primaryteach87 · 23/04/2016 22:05

Microwave then in the oven at 250 for 10 mins.

LitteRedSparkle · 23/04/2016 22:05

baked and jacket in my house

What is the point of the frozen ones? its not hard to shove one in the microwave? Are they different in any way?

I like an overbaked one in the oven, but will start off in the microwave...

Fillybuster · 23/04/2016 22:05

Microwave for 10-15 mins depending on size, number of potatoes and hunger levels.

Then oven on 200 for 20-30 minutes.

That way you get the crunchy skin and fluffy middle, but without the stupidly long wait time....!

NeedACLeverNN · 23/04/2016 22:07

Hmmm I guess I can accept we both kinda win

I hate baked potatoes from the oven. I like soft microwaved ones, with butter, cheese and cranston pickle. No other fillings are allowed.

WonkoTheSane42 · 23/04/2016 22:11

Cranston pickle? Branston pickle, autocorrect. We're not in Breaking Bad.

Buddahbelly · 23/04/2016 22:11

Im going to try the microwave and grill rick next time i do one, I had one for tea tonight with chicken salad.

Rub salt and oil into the skin and oven for 50 mins... divine! they come out all fluffly and crispy. I even have one of those jacket potato 4 prong stand things to cook them but you get the same results from sticking in a fork whilst its in the oven.

Seren85 · 23/04/2016 22:12

Microwave for 6 to 8 minutes then a bit of oil and salt and in the oven for 30 minutes. I'd prefer them in the just the oven but don't usually want to wait 1.5 hours to eat after getting in from work.

Buddahbelly · 23/04/2016 22:12

and does anyone else hear George Dawes singing ohhhh baked potato when they see it written down Grin

Follyfoot · 23/04/2016 22:12

I'm a baked potato person too. For speed, cook in the microwave and turn oven to its highest heat. When the potato is cooked, rub with oil and roll in salt. Then pop in the hot oven for 10 minutes, 5 each side. Yum.

CremeEggThief · 23/04/2016 22:14

I use the microwave for nearly anything I can, but jacket potatoes are always done in the oven here, so YANBU. 50 minutes though?Hmm More like 90!

witsender · 23/04/2016 22:14

Baked potatoes here. Rub oil into skin, salt and pepper then into a hot oven for between hour and hour and half. Garlic butter, cheese, mayo, maybe some bacon or ham. Yummmmmmmmmmm.

ExitPursuedByABear · 23/04/2016 22:14

Bottom of the top oven of the Aga.

Microwaved baked potatoes are minging.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/04/2016 22:14

Neither of you are perfectly correct.

You get the best crunchy skin if you rub oil on the potato (previously washed and skin dried), precooked or not, then sprinkle salt on it.

There. Don't say I'm not willing to share my wisdom

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/04/2016 22:15

Ah, beaten by witsender
Grin

sparechange · 23/04/2016 22:16

Start in the microwave and then crisp up in the oven
The only trump card is doing them start to finish in an aga
But other than that, they take hours. Who has time for that?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/04/2016 22:16

Where did Cranston pickle come from? Baking Bad? Wink

Crispbutty · 23/04/2016 22:18

The mccains frozen microwave ones are very good.. take 5 mins then ten mins to crisp up in the oven.

BikeRunSki · 23/04/2016 22:20

LittleRed the frozen ones are the taste and texture of a proper jacket potato, but with the ease and convenience of microwave cooking. They are a hundred times nicer than microwaving a raw potato. I keep some at work (we have a freezer and microwaves) and they are very handy for after school/work meals for the DC.

SenecaFalls · 23/04/2016 22:26

Baked potato always in the US. We like them baked all the way in the oven. We also prefer sweet potatoes, except with steak.

Italiangreyhound · 23/04/2016 22:27

Neither of you are right! Nuke in microwave for about 6 or 7 minutes. Then bake in oven on an oiled tray for about 30 minutes.

Delicious. But I am sure your potatoes are too!

Ughnotagain · 23/04/2016 22:28

Oven is absolutely the way to go, but who has time really?

Though if you do have time, roll them in salt first. They go super crispy and they're pre-seasoned Smile

WellThisIsFun · 23/04/2016 22:29

I like both. But they create a different potato experience.
I love microwaved potatoes with loads of butter as a quick snack.
