Baked potato debate

NeedACLeverNN · 23/04/2016 21:48

Me and dh are having a debate over a baked potato....how mundane I know.

I think a baked potato should be cooked in the oven. Takes longer I know but it's how you get that lovely crispy skin

He cooks them by whacking them in the microwave first then finishing them off under the grill. It's quicker and there not much difference in taste but that's not the point.

So wise ones....who is right?

please say me or I will never live this down. He is sat here with a smug look on his face

Microwave then oven.

Ludways · 23/04/2016 23:39

I swap between baked and jacket

FankEweVeryMuch · 23/04/2016 23:40

I just stick them in the oven at 190 for an hour. Zero faff.

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 23/04/2016 23:53

Oven for a minimum of 75mins.

The other day I forgot my spud (DC are to blame) and realised when it had been in there 2.5hrs! It was the best jacket spud I have ever had.

Reading this thread has made me really want a jacket potato right now but its almost midnight and I've got an early start tomorrow Sad. Will have to do one for dinner.

PinkSnowAndStars · 24/04/2016 01:05

Oven oven oven.

chickenowner · 24/04/2016 01:32

FinallyFreeFromItAll If I remember early enough we have spuds baked for 60 minutes + ... doesn't always happen though!

Incidentally, what are you free from? #nosyparker

redcaryellowcar · 24/04/2016 04:59

I'm with you, oven is best (and from what I read about microwaves healthier although we still have a microwave and use it in an emergency I got Ito the habit of using the oven by popping in potatoes as we we went our local playgroup and after a couple of hours in the oven around 160 deg they were delicious!

whatamidoinghereanyway · 24/04/2016 06:12

Oven!!!!!! It doesn't even take that long. Or slow cooker Wink

Silvercatowner · 24/04/2016 06:13

Oven, having massaged them with oily/salty/herby hands. I don't like the taste of microwaved potatoes, and really dislike the pre cooked frozen ones.

Rhubardandcustard · 24/04/2016 07:18

Defintley oven. Not the same in the microwave.

HackerFucker22 · 24/04/2016 08:05

Oven for me. I won't eat the skin otherwise.

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 24/04/2016 08:18

Abusive/violent ex. 8 years, it took me to manage to leave. I just felt so utterly relieved and free, when me and the DC had left him. I wanted FreeAtLast but someone had already taken it.

katienana · 24/04/2016 08:34

I stick several on the oven on at about 170 for a couple of hours on a morning. Then wrap in foil and warm them through for teatime. The spares are good for lunches.

LitteRedSparkle · 24/04/2016 08:49

so... if i oven bake (completely) and then freeze, and then ... microwave(?) will it still be crispy? or do i need to bake from frozen?

Mousefinkle · 24/04/2016 09:23

I haven't owned a microwave (purposely) for five years so it's definitely oven here. I always enjoyed my mums oven baked jackets on bonfire night lathered with butter. Mmm.

Ilovenannyplum · 24/04/2016 09:46

If you have enough time. Oven baked. With a tiny bit of oil and salt on the outside.

Otherwise, blast in the microwave and then finish in the over.

..... Ponders if 9.46am is too early for a baked potato Grin

OneWaySystemBlues · 24/04/2016 10:14

I saw Jamie Oliver do the microwave method in one of his 30 min meal progs. He cooked the potato in the microwave, then rubbed olive oil in and put it under the grill with rosemary and salt. I tried it out for my husband and he said it was really good. The grill and oil crisps up the skins and the salt/rosemary gives it a good taste.

Ameliablue · 24/04/2016 10:40

Your oh, unless your oven is on anyway.

MumoftheBoyandtheGirl · 24/04/2016 11:38

10 minutes minutes in the microwave, then 10 in the air fryer. Quick, crispy skin and highly recommended Grin

DarlingCoffee · 24/04/2016 17:27

Oven all the way!!

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 24/04/2016 18:05

I don't have a functional oven at the minute, so microwaved here :o

GreenMarkerPen · 24/04/2016 18:10

sorry he is right. just takes too long in the oven (unless making 40 at the same time).
did he put the cheese on under the grill. yum.

parmalilac · 24/04/2016 18:19

I have just discovered Elfe potatoes - they are the best. My husband suspects they are 'pre-buttered' as they are so creamy and buttery....

JaceLancs · 24/04/2016 18:21

I microwave first then finish in oven, but we much prefer sweet potatoes to bake, then fill with mushrooms in garlic butter

TwentyCupsOfTea · 24/04/2016 18:35

Cover in salt and olive oil and pop in the oven for 90 minutes. Then take out the middles, mix with cheese and put back in the skins. Under the grill for a minute or two.

I'm hungry now.
