That's it really, more details to follow, but do you like marzipan or not?

OP posts:
PantsOfGold · 07/02/2016 23:03

My dad used to give me a box of marzipan fruits every Christmas. I think I need to resurrect this tradition!

Ameliablue · 07/02/2016 23:06

Decent marzipan is quite expensive, and you'd need quite a bit for a cake to serve 110. Seems a bit daft to pay for something that most people will pick off. I do like the idea of removable marzipan decorations though.

But lots of people have said they do like it so not necessarily most people picking it off. And more importantly it is what the birthday boy wants.

Woopsiedaisy · 07/02/2016 23:06

Or desert even

cdtaylornats · 07/02/2016 23:08

Couldn't you make the cake without the marzipan but decorated with marzipan fruits, so the haters can pick them off and give them to the birthday boy.

I like the Ritter Sports Marzipan and if I need a treat Niederegger Marzipan Loaves.

My next indulgence is going to be Niederegger Marzipan with Kirsch Cherry

Niederegger have a shop with 300 kinds, and a cafe with cakes and ice cream that features marzipan - I want to go to Lubeck.

Ameliablue · 07/02/2016 23:10

Also for that many people you are probably looking at more than one tier or additional cutting cakes so don't necessarily need to pay for marzipan for all of it.

SpaceDinosaur · 07/02/2016 23:12

YES!!! Love it!
Will happily buy and devour bars of the stuff

tingon · 07/02/2016 23:19

Aldi do bars of chocolate coated marzipan with a strip of chocolate praline in the middle.

I have stopped shopping there since I started my diet to avoid the torture of seeing it, and not buying it.

Twinklestein · 07/02/2016 23:20

Love it.

Particularly like chocolate marzipans.

As for Pflaumen in Madeira - fucking love. (Chocolate, marzipan, plum jammy stuff with Madeira obv)

Twinklestein · 07/02/2016 23:21

Glad to see another fan of Niederegger.

brightnearly · 07/02/2016 23:27

Yes - Niederegger! Not the stuff for baking.

Salty liquorice, anyone?!?

Enkopkaffetak · 07/02/2016 23:30

Really depends on what type it is. I love some. Others I wouldn't touch with a bargepole (I am happiest if I can get Anton Berg but Niederegger is very nice too.)

Enkopkaffetak · 07/02/2016 23:32

Ohh other fans of Niederegger :) Yes Love salty Liquorice Brigthnearly.. what about Tyrkisk pepper?

choccyp1g · 07/02/2016 23:34

What's the name of the Easter Cake that is "iced" with marzipan and has "eggs" of toasted marzipan on top?
I'm an eater of block marzipan. It is a source of pleasure to hear all these marzipan haters; all the more for me.

choccyp1g · 07/02/2016 23:34

Got it! simnel cake.

LovelyFriend · 07/02/2016 23:35

Marzipan is the devils food.
I like to eat pretty much anything but marzipan is really gross.

Grapejuicerocks · 07/02/2016 23:37

Hate, hate, hate the stuff.

Grapejuicerocks · 07/02/2016 23:38

Oh and just in case I didn't make myself clear - I don't like marzipan.

jay55 · 07/02/2016 23:38

Allergic so never tried it, hate it for being attached to icing and stopping me eating cake.

LizardBreath · 07/02/2016 23:40

Love it!

Twinklestein · 07/02/2016 23:42

Anton Berg make Pflaumen in Madeira. Better than N but harder to get hold of.

(My husband brings them from Germany).

HairySubject · 07/02/2016 23:43

Can't you do after tier cake, Victoria sponge with no marzipan on one tier and the a moist gooey chocolate fudge type tier encased in sweet delicious marzipan for the other tier?

Essexgirlupnorth · 07/02/2016 23:43

Love it as does my mum

HairySubject · 07/02/2016 23:44

Sorry that should say two tier. Got a bit overexcited there.

Grilledaubergines · 07/02/2016 23:46

You'll need more than one caking to serve that many so if absolutely important, have it on a small one.

Odd to have marzipan on sponge cake though and as another professional cake make up thread said, very very rare to be asked.

Would be unnecessary to use on sponge cake as a smoother, that's what the icing is for!

Ameliablue · 08/02/2016 08:45

It can give a another appearance than icing alone. Many cake makers do use it and call it marzipan knickers Smile. Personally I don't but I know it is a thing others do.
